   the things we know...

Ren was sweating. Keeping time internally was getting more difficult and he felt the fever start making him dizzy. Vertigo was to follow. He felt disoriented and it was impossible to focus his gaze on things. The picture he saw would jerk along his line of sight as his brain struggled to retrieve the information instantly with all the other sensations he felt. Mindfog was about to follow soon. Maybe Hisao would fail the exercise after all and Ren would have to cure himself? Meanwhile, as Hisao worked away, Ren took a portion of the time to feel out his internals. Medical expertise with a keen chakra control let him analyse his own insides while just sitting there. It was good for monitoring the effects of poison and helping him counter these effects with chakra alone. Practice made the skill so Ren had been poisoning himself often lately.

Eventually Hisao came up with another vial and his open notes. ”Cat got your tongue now, huh?” Ren observed as he didn’t take the vial just yet but took the notes. He squinted to read them while wobbling a little and then sat them down in the sink. ”Close enough.” the man grabbed the vial and stood up. It looked like he could stand without much directional challenge again despite not taking a cure and it wouldn’t work that fast. The man slowly sobered up from the symptoms as he was continuously healing himself on the inside and his complexion brightened, too. He couldn’t cure it without chemical aid but he could out-heal the effects. Doing this earlier wouldn’t have been as dramatic a lesson as he had wanted to give so Hisao would just see Ren quickly getting better without no outside help. The reason for that would be up for the genin to figure out.

The blonde doctor poured out a fourth of the potion his Sourei underling made in a bowl and created a new mixture. He added powdered medicine and acidic agents with some counter components for his gut and eye-measured all of it. Not that Ren thought he didn’t need to measure, he had simply worked with the ingredients so much that he knew the mass versus feel versus weight by memory now. In fifteen seconds he was mixing and then, after evaluating the new drink for just a moment to see the colour change from purple to clear, he would drink it, looking completely fine by that point. And so, just like that, he was cured. It would take some minutes for the antidote to get broken down but he would maintain his health till then. Easy.

”So why did you add the blood pills?” he asked now, completely fine.

Hisao did not rise to the bait and so there was a long moment of continued silence from Hisao as the notebook was taken out of his hand. He hoped the man would not go to any of the other pages and luckily he didn’t. Good. Nothing was incriminating per se in the book, only a fool would do that, but there were some personal thoughts in the margins, something that might clue someone in on Hisao’s mostly unspoken thoughts. He did not want someone like Ren to have access to them and getting the book back became a bit of a priority for him.

He eyed the man's ‘natural recovery’ before even ingesting the vial and wondered if he had some ability to combat the poison and if that might have been why he had been willing to do all of this.

"Activated charcoal”

Hisao responded with no particular tone more as a statement than anything. Ren had not explained much of anything and so mirroring his teacher for the day, he did not explain further. If Ren was such an expert he would be able to figure it out on his own.

He reached out and took back the notebook, closing it and after looking over Ren, out of medical curiosity one last time, turned and walked to his bag and started putting his things away. He would have pushed the bag under the table so it was harder to get to or fall over and would then have gone back to the setup he had made earlier. He wordlessly started cleaning up after himself. He turned the bottle with the small black pills towards Ren, effectively showing him the label. Insofar as it was possible Hisao would have silently cleaned and put all the stuff away. He was used to doing this part as it was about a third of what he did these days at the hospital anyway. For Hisao, the teaching part of today had already concluded and once he was done would have looked for any excuse to leave and go home. He had never wanted to leave hospital grounds as much as today but kept those thoughts on the inside, focusing on just getting the final few tasks done so that thought could become reality.

He would have willingly opened his mouth one last time, bowing his head respectfully at Ren.

"..Thank you for today's lesson, Guré Ren-Sensei.”

He was not going to make up apologies for lacking skills, thinking they would likely just ring hollow as bad excuses. Once everything had been said and done, Hisao realised that even if he had survived his fair share of close calls because of poisons in the past, there was still so much for him to learn. While he was not inclined to start poisoning himself or others just to learn more, there certainly was something here for him to delve into.

”Because of the nausea?” Ren cocked his head a little and giggled. Hisao was such a weirdo. It kind of made him curious about his growing up. What made a teenager so uptight and judgy? The super noble clans came with judgmental attitudes, surely but maybe there was something else behind that. The blonde considered digging into it… perhaps one day when he had free time.

Quietly, the chuunin would watch Hisao tidy up. He’d help a little but there was really no need. The Sourei kid was on top of it. When he bowed to leave, the teacher of the hour just gave: ”Till next time, Hisao-kun. Don’t work too hard.” with a smile and a light wave. There would probably be a next time. The genin didn’t faint how other genin did sometimes. So he could be used.

After the kid left, Ren left the room as well and walked down the hall slowly. It was always active in a hospital. His green eyes scanned the nurses and doctors rushing around to conduct tests and deliver results. It was research. Constant research that medical professionals engaged in. There was no such thing as knowing everything about it and so Ren decided to teach what he knew forward to those who wanted to listen.

”Now then… I wonder if that cute nurse’s shift is over already…”
