”Yo! Chibi-An!” Ren called out and waved as he approached his cousin. It was rare for them to be put on a mission together - sometimes he forgot that An was a genin already. Most of his days were spent on work and the ones that weren't would be spent either on some date or in glorious lonesome.

That day Ren was dressed in his shinobi uniform, all in black under his flack jacket, a couple holsters strapped to his legs and a bigger bag of supplies at the back of his belt. His headband was tied around his forehead but his hair covered most of it. It was strange to see him with no flashy outfit. The only accessories he had was a vowen thread bracelet on his wrist.

He came up to An and extended his arms to give her a hug. However, instead of reaching down for the girl, he hugged empty air right above her head. ”Oh? Did you get shorter since I last saw you?” he laughed, amused at his own joke. Being tall came with its perks and one was making fun of shorter family members just as some would make fun of his height.

”How have you been, Chibi-An? Ready for our mission?” he asked in a friendly tone and offered a kind smile. The blonde doctor couldn't imagine much happening on the day but he would still check in on the emotional well-being of his teammate. They should get a move on shortly…

It was strange. Sometimes Ren forgot how quickly time passes. To him it seemed like An was growing quickly and it was almost sad to think she, too, would learn that the life of a shinobi is full of death. A part of him wondered if it was possible for her to go through life being sheltered from ever taking a life or risking hers. *Is that... what they call over-bearing, I wonder.* he wondered. Concern for a loved one was always a complicated mix of feelings. Easily misunderstood as a lack of trust in their abilities, concern could also be smothering. *Intentions, intentions... oh, that would make a cool song.* the blonde made a mental note to develop the line of thought later.

”Busy, dear cousin, busy. Avoiding sunlight with my nose in research or practicing. Did you know? There was recently a medical shinobi who transplanted an organ from a shinobi to the man they were protecting – while in the field? I never knew that could be successful but, apparently, it worked. Needed work as soon as they got to a hospital later, but the asset survived.” Ren eventually stopped himself before going on and on about all the interesting things he had read up on recently. An would be used to the medical rambles by now.

The pair exited through the gates after just a couple of formalities. One of the guards kept glaring at Ren for a good while, however. It was only when they had gotten to the other side, did Ren comment on it. ”I mean really... how long is that guy going to give me the stink-eye?” he complained with a long sigh ”It’s not even a big deal – I'm sure he can get a different girlfriend. And besides, not like I became her boyfriend or anything – we went on one date.” Some people were just too sensitive.

    Given the time of year and the general area they were starting to patrol, the biggest threat was remembering to bring a jacket and making sure someone knew where you were headed outside of the village. Patrols were regular enough in the warmer parts of the year that not much came close enough to the village to cause any issue, but in truth the patrols were much more thin and irregular this time of year. This was in fact a simple perimeter patrol, and as they left their footprints near the front part of the village, there were more than a few eyes on that area and on them as they began to move further away.

    By the time they had rounded the first area out of sight from the guards, it was starting to snow a bit harder, making it slightly more difficult to see, but in a way they'd likely be used to by now. The mist was hanging in the air mixing with the cold and the snow, almost biting against their exposed skin, which was certainly an annoyance, but it wasn't much to actually worry about unless they were out here for days. The further from the village they walked the more they started to find the snow was deeper, the foliage was a bit denser, even a few small animals that didn't even bother running when they came closer, so used to seeing the shinobi that regularly walked these exact areas. If they were looking for anything that screamed "excitement", they certainly weren't finding it yet.

An chuckled at Ren's grumbling about the guard. "You do have a way with people, Ren nii-san," she teased lightly. "Maybe next time you should think twice before accepting a date invitation. Or at least make sure the guard's not around!" She smiled warmly.

As they walked, An kept her senses alert, scanning the snow-covered terrain for any signs of unusual activity. The snow crunched under their feet, the cold air sharp and invigorating. She loved the serenity of the winter landscape, but she was also acutely aware that danger could be hiding beneath the calm surface.

"Clockwise it is," she said, nodding at Ren's suggestion. She adjusted her uchigatana at her side, making sure it was easily accessible. "I heard about that medical case too, by the way. It's amazing what the medical corps can do these days."

As they moved further from the village, An's eyes scanned the horizon, the snow making it difficult to see far ahead. "Do you think we'll run into anything today?" she asked, half hoping for some action to break the monotony. "I have heard that these patrols are usually routine, but you never know what might come up."

The cold started to seep through her clothes, and she pulled her outer layer tighter around her. "It's getting colder. I hope we don't have to stay out here too long," she added with a grin, as they continued their walk around the village.

”Around?” he repeated. Did An think that Ren went around breaking up couples or making a move on women as soon as their boyfriends stepped away for even a minute? What kind of impression of him was built in An’s head? Ren couldn’t help but let out a deep sigh. They should probably spend more time together. It was interesting that An knew the news in the medical field, too. Not many people took interest if they themselves were not in the field.

The pair walked onwards and slowly fell victim to a harder snowfall. The wind would scrape snowflakes past Ren’s face but, to the young man, this was almost routine. This patrol was something he had done more times than he cared to remember and he was aware to check for the signs of going the right direction. Mainly the presence of a treeline and some iconic path and large rock formations. Theye were not the most exciting landmarks but enough to navigate in snowfall.

”Oh, I hope it’s pretty boring, hahaha. That way we can get back and go have some tea to warm up after.” he said easily while squinting to look ahead. The blonde was taking the lead about half a step or so in front of An to check they were going the right way. ”Most patrols I did were, honestly, quite uneventful. Never become a gate guard, Chibi-An... your soul will surely die of boredom.”

Once the snow became a bit higher than his ancle, Ren would step on top of the layer of snow and apply the same principle as the act of water walking but this time walk on top of stow. It was easy for him since his control of chakra was excellent. Also, he had done it before in the exactly same scenario. He would extend a hand to An to get on top of the snow, too, so they could walk on the surface. If she couldn’t he’d wait to use alternative methods. One of those methods would be to carry his cousin on his back.

”Are you cold? Keep moving your fingers and toes and breathe through your nose. If you can’t feel any part anymore, tell me and I’ll help you.” Ren explained calmly. He would wait for An to respond and looked around as he did. *Hm? Did something move in the distance?* Perhaps he was just seeing things.

    It was easy to be at a heightened sense of sheer alter on even basic missions, but when patrolling the idea was to look out for things out of the ordinary, keeping the shinobi on edge just a little. You were almost expected to be for the duration of the patrol, which tended to make people both paranoid and perhaps a little bored, as there wasn't much else you could do but walk, watch, and have a chat if you were lucky to have a second person with you.

    The trees for the most part had been cleared around the immediate perimeter of the village, but that didn't mean it was some barren wasteland, nor did it mean animals didn't constantly stray close by. Just in the distance, as the snow began to pick up, there was something in their near direct path, maybe a few feet tall, white as the falling snow, but moving around in a slightly frantic manner. It was too short to be a tree, and too big and odd shaped to be a deer, and whatever it was didn't look to bothered by the two. Whatever it was didn't care anymore than they did about the cold or the snow, The closer they got, they might have noticed multiple rabbit tracks that seemed to disappear suddenly, heading in the direction of whatever that was ahead, shaking a bit.

An smiled at Ren’s teasing and shook her head. "You are right, I wouldn’t survive as a gate guard," she admitted. Her breath fogged in the cold air as she continued to scan their surroundings.

When Ren offered his hand to help her walk on the snow, An gratefully accepted, concentrating her chakra to mirror his technique. "Thank you, Ren nii-san. This is much better." She followed his lead, stepping lightly on the snow's surface.

She listened to Ren’s advice about keeping warm and nodded. "I’ll be fine, Ren-niisan. I’ll let you know if it gets too bad." An glanced around. She trusted Ren’s experience and was glad to have him with her on this patrol. Despite her earlier hopes for some action, she also wouldn’t mind a quiet mission.

An’s gaze followed Ren’s to the distant movement. She squinted, trying to make out what it was. "Do you see that?" she asked quietly, pointing ahead. "It doesn’t look like any animal I’ve seen around here before." Her hand instinctively moved to her uchigatana, ready to draw it if necessary.

As they got closer, An noticed the rabbit tracks that seemed to lead toward the mysterious shape. "Those tracks… they just stop," she murmured. "That’s strange. We should be careful."

”Aah.” he nodded in agreement to An. Ren would slowly but surely begin to channel chakra in his right hand. In case whatever it was turned aggressive, he would prefer to finish it quickly with a single attack aimed at the back of its neck and severing the nerves of the spine.

The disappearing rabbit tracks were indeed strange. Was it a predator? ”Oh, what if...” he started thoughtfully as the two clansmen would approach the creature cautiously. This was only something he had read in story books but all stories came from somewhere.

”What if the tracks stopped abruptly because that creature swallowed the rabbits whole? Have you heard of the abominable snowman? It’s said to be a person who got abandoned by his team in a snow-storm and its rage turned into a big, human-eating monster that rampages through winter and eats anything with a pulse – never to be satisfied...” the blonde doctor turned quiet as they approached the big creature.

Ren didn’t expect it to be anything out of the ordinary. Maybe a bear with an identity crisis? Perhaps it was something smaller that looked big to them because of all the snow? Maybe some pile of rabbits moving around as a singular being? He did not know and, truthfully, his heart was beating quicker from the unknown but he was also excited. At least, the patrol wasn’t as boring as he expected it to be.

    Moving in on the clearly threatening and dangerous beast in front of them, the creature kept shaking, almost as if was cold out in this snow as well, shivering perhaps? It was misshapen, whatever it was, not taking on a traditional form with obviously seen arms and legs, and whatever face it had wasn't looking in there direction, so perhaps they'd be able to simply sneak up on it and be done with it in quick order before it had a chance to turn around and attack. What they hadn't noticed until they got closer however was the noises it was making, sounding near familiar, yet not in the familiar way, and the movement was near rhythmic. This creature was also not quite as large as at first glance, but the longer they stared the less it made any sense.

    A snow beat with no visible arms and legs, didn't run at all when they got close, and just kept shaking and making the most obnoxious higher pitched sounds. Once they were almost on top of it, there was suddenly no more movement at all, and the noises stopped, and that's when the deadly creature decided to strike!

    Out from the snow came a white flash that was right towards the two shinobi, then a second, landing almost exactly where the rabbit tracks had stopped before, as two decently sized snow rabbit went bounding through the snow passed them. A big pile of snow came off what was essentially a large bush and flopped onto the ground right in front of them both. With enough imagination they'd likely be able to gather what the two animals were doing and why the bush snow covered foliage was so animated, but for now they had thwarted the crazed snow beast that would no doubt have taken down the entire village otherwise.

An couldn’t help but chuckle as the realization dawned on her. "I guess that’s one mystery solved," she said, her voice light with amusement. She sheathed her uchigatana and let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. "We’ve been outsmarted by rabbits."

She turned to Ren, a smile tugging at her lips. "Your story was much more exciting though," she teased gently. "An abominable snowman rampaging through the winter... you had me on edge for a moment."

An knelt down to examine the snow where the rabbits had disappeared. The tracks were now clear, and she could see how they had burrowed under the snow to create the illusion of a larger creature. "They’re clever little things, aren’t they? Using the snow and bushes like that."

She straightened up and looked around, her gaze scanning the perimeter once more. "At least we know the village is safe from snow monsters for now," she said with a grin. "But we should continue our patrol. There might still be actual threats out here."

As they walked, An couldn’t help but feel a bit more relaxed. The earlier tension had eased, and she was glad for the company. "Thank you for being with me, Ren-nii-san. It makes these patrols a lot more interesting and... less lonely." She glanced at him, her expression sincere. "And your stories, even if they’re just stories, keep things lively."

She adjusted her cloak to better shield herself from the cold, taking Ren’s advice seriously. "Let’s keep moving. We still have a lot of ground to cover."

”..." it was when the noise started that Ren began to scowl at the movement. The closer they would creep, the more the movement seemed less random and more rhythmical. The wiggling structure just seemed creepy and kind of annoying at this point and as soon as there was movement outwards from the animated snow pile, Ren’s eyes widened. He couldn’t help but feel an eye twitch straight after. Bunnies? That was it? And here he had been hoping for something interesting. This would once again be an uneventful patrol, it looked like.

The snow falling down took the cake and Ren let an exhausted laugh escape from his lips. He took a couple breaths through his mouth to have the cold air make him alert again. The exhales cast vapour in front of him and it was then he noticed the sting on his cheeks and nose from the cold.

”Let’s keep moving.” he urged his cousin and the duo would keep treading on the surface of snow.

”You know, some believe the snowman to be real. A product of human vengeance and sorrow. Do you think he can be real?” Ren asked as they walked.

”Rabbits are amazing!” he confirmed, his breath showing in front of him as they continued. ”Such vulnerable creatures with little defense properties yet they have been around for ages. Even here. Not a lot could survive winters here and the smaller animals usually hide during winter – like squirrels, or even beavers. From rodent-like species, rabbits are the bravest and the most wide-spread. They have no predatory qualities except for their own sometimes...” he trailed off in the last bit. Perhaps An didn’t need to know what they sometimes did to their young.

”They should not survive but they do. It’s fascinating.” it sounded genuine. Ren was truly excited about things he couldn’t understand. This was one of them. The young man was a geek at heart, even if he could be a Casanova some days and a heartless jerk some others. ”Hahaha, safe from snow monsters indeed. I don’t expect much will happen, Chibi-An. It would be nice to at least encounter something scary but bears hybernate during the snow season and we won’t find a lot of wolves this close to the village unless someone feeds them. Maybe a fox?”

The blonde looked down at An and gave a warm smile: "You’re family, An. Thank you for saying that but you don’t have to thank me for being with you – I already know how much you appreciate me. I love you and couldn’t imagine life without you or Shō. Not that I couldn’t live – I just never want to.” it wasn’t the easiest thing to convey complex emotions but Ren didn’t hesitate to express how he felt about family. The only few people to mattered to him were family members. He also tried to express that he didn’t think of it as co-dependency but his will that kept him close and attentive.

They had walked for a while already... ”Won’t be long now. I can already see the cup of tea I’m having after.”

    Perhaps in a divergent timeline these two would have been attacked by a pack of wolves, a bear straying too close to the village walls, some sort of elemental, but being jump scared by rabbits was the closest threat they'd likely deal with today. No one could likely blame either of these shinobi for being on their guards, because it just as easily could have been an enemy hiding, but alas, the dangerous snow bush of Yuki claimed another victim. The snow continued to fall around them, covering their tracks away from the village, as they could see up ahead the train heading into the village, blowing snow away from the railway and causing a small dusting of snow in their direction until it was clear.

    There was a certain beauty to this country that most would never appreciate, and likely only see in passing even with those that lived in the village. These patrols gave the younger shinobi a chance to witness it first hand, as the harsh climate gave way to a thriving community that bumped up against unique flora and fauna to the region, and a breeze from the ocean not far from the walls of the village. For every very real creature in the deep waters off the coast, every potential threatening enemy, every large animal that could pose a threat, there were far more simple moments to take in.

An let out a small laugh at Ren’s musings about rabbits. "They are amazing, aren’t they?" she said, a note of admiration in her voice. "Surviving out here in such harsh conditions, finding ways to adapt and thrive... it’s a reminder that even the smallest creatures can have incredible strength."

As they continued walking, An felt the cold air biting at her cheeks and nose, but it was a welcome sensation, invigorating her senses. She adjusted her cloak again, making sure it was snug around her. The snowfall was steady, adding a serene layer of white to the landscape.

An and Ren continued their patrol in the peaceful quiet of the winter landscape. The snow crunched softly under their boots as they moved, their breaths visible in the cold air. Despite the initial excitement of the rabbit tracks, the rest of the patrol was uneventful.

An and Ren both gave respectful nods before turning to leave. As they walked out of the office, An felt a sense of relief wash over her. The duty was done, and they had done it well.
