Ah, Gengetsu! The jewel of Mizu no Kuni was a bustling hub of trade and culture. Ren and his cousins had been sent on a mission to escort some goods and merchants to Kirigakure and then further to the mirror lake Kagamino no Shi. All of them had been in the West side port for a couple days now and had been preparing for the journey. While the whole trip should only last two days, they needed enough supplies to last a few days (in case something went wrong) and there was a lot of coordinating to do with the merchants, as well. While normally a full team of shinobi might not be needed for this kind of a mission, the amount of goods was quite large - they have a row of cow caravans waiting to leave. It was merely a question of minutes before the party could, finally, set off. There were twenty loads of goods either in carts to drag by or for the animals to carry on their backs on land, five people in the merchant party and three shinobi guarding them. There was a ship crew taking them to Kirigakure, too. Out of the shinobi, Ren was the oldest but was a skilled medical shinobi so he would make sure no one died on the way, if everything went as planned. The plan was to get on a boat to go to Kirigakure and then go by road to Kagamino. Currently, they were all at port and had pretty much finished loading everything.

In the meantime, while they were waiting to leave…

”Ren-samaaa! Don't leave!” complained a young woman with long blonde hair and olive skin. There were four girls surrounding the tall Gurē. Over the last couple days he had, of course, prepared everything necessary for the mission and wellbeing of the group, as well as thought of contingencies. However, Ren worked fast and was extremely efficient so he had some spare time that had been spent shopping, watching a part of a gig and meeting new people - especially young women. Flirting was a fun game and her was, after all, a notorious womaniser.

”I'm sorry but I have to attend to my work - maybe I'll visit again one day.” he explained much to the disapproving sighs and pouting around him. ”You might not even remember me when I return…” he trailed off with a hint of sadness in his voice but a mischievous glint in his eye. It was clearly bait and there were takers: ”No way! I couldn't forget you, Ren-sama!” a traditionally dressed dark-haired miss exclaimed to comfort him.
”That's true! You played that shamisen so well! I can still hear it - it made my heart flutter, Ren-sama! Come back and play for us all again!” another girl asked. Ren had found a music store and tried some of the shamisens there - the girl worked at the store and had heard him play.

”You are all too kind - how am I so lucky?” he asked while gently holding their hands. ”It is time. Farewell.” he bid goodbye and proceeded to walk closer to his cousins. It looked like one of the young women was crying - they waved every time he looked their direction and he'd just give a smile or a small wave back.

”So, are we all packed?” he asked as he'd look over the other two Gurē.

Shō leaned against the railing of the port, enjoying the cool breeze alongside his younger sister, An. The lively atmosphere of the bustling port didn't seem to affect Shō's usual calm demeanour. They waited for Ren, who finally arrived amidst a small entourage of enthusiastic fan girls.

"Ren-sama~ We are all packed~" Shō responded Ren's question with a playful tease, a playful grin on his face as he acknowledged his older cousin's popularity. The trio shared a few jokes and laughs as they made their way to the ship.

Shō's typically reserved nature seemed to fade away in the presence of Ren and An. That was a given since they shared a close bond since childhood. The banter continued, creating a light-hearted atmosphere among the Gurē trio. They talked about literally everything, from Ren’s admirers to favourite foods of Gengetsu.

However, when the conversation shifted to the mission at hand, Shō reverted to his serious self. "It's not exactly a dangerous mission, but I think it's better if we refresh ourselves on the mission." His gaze focused on the cargo and the risks that lay ahead.

The Gurē trio spent some time identifying potential risks and discussing contingency plans. Shō, in particular, took charge of strategising, ensuring that every detail was considered as they sailed across the river. As the sun fell below the horizon, Shō excused himself to take care of another crucial aspect of the journey — dinner. As the ship navigated through the river back toward Kirigakure, he skillfully prepared a hearty meal for the group.

Recalling a previous failed cooking attempt, he chuckled and reminded the rest about the time he almost set himself ablaze. "Remember that? Haha…" But unlike last time, he had significantly improved as a chef. Shō playfully ushered An and Ren away, assuring them, "Don’t worry, I'm good now! I swear!" The soon-to-arrive aroma of the cooking food would prove him right.

An was visiting Gangetsu for the first time. She had a fantastic few days watching her older brother and cousin deal with merchants and all the paperwork and formalities that came with a mission like this. She didn't have much to do but watch, listen, and learn. Even though it was just a simple escort mission, the road was quite long and the cargo was large; perhaps this is why the three Gures were assigned to this task.

Ren's popularity with ladies was palpable; wherever they went, her cousin was the apple of women's eyes. An couldn't figure out why. Perhaps it was because he was a member of her family. Or was she simply too young to understand? "Yes, we're ready," she said, as Sho teased Ren about the situation all the to the ship they were about to board with the merchants and cargo.

The river journey to Kirigakure was going swimmingly until Sho decided to cook. An was unsure if that was a good idea. "Indeed, Sho-niisan. That is something I recall. Obaa-chan scolded you for almost setting fire to the kitchen, while Ren-niisan couldn't stop laughing at you and was scolded by her in the end for not stopping you." She recalls that dreadful evening, wanting to make a sad face but being unable to because the situation was far too comical to recall.

Fortunately, the food was edible this time, "It's not bad! Right, Ren-niisan?" as they ate the food Sho had prepared, An turned to Ren. The ship was moving alongside the river, as the trio took turns to patrol the deck with nothing unusual so far.

Because An’s genetic makeup is more similar to that of fungi than that of humans, she can use techniques based on Fungi anatomy, such as secretions or enzymes from various Fungi. She can easily generate or grow any part of a Fungi's anatomy from her own body by using chakra to further alter her own cells. Finally, because these techniques are made from her own cells or bodily fluids, such as converting her saliva into a specific Fungi secretion, An is immune to their effects.

A wide grin grew on Ren's face and he chuckled: ”Jealousy isn't a good colour on you, cousin~ Don't worry, Shō, one day a girl will like you, too, I'm sure - let's all take a moment to pray on it.” he'd put his palms together and would start reciting some fake prayer about how he wishes his cousin to meet more people. Of course, Shō would know, as well An would know and Ren would know - there was no cell in the blonde's body that actually thought badly of any of his cousins. They had grown up together and if Ren could feel love and undying loyalty it was towards his cousins. He would playfully fistbump Shō's shoulder and would continue to look over the supplies on the ship.

Dinner time was coming soon and there wasn't a lot to do - the prediction was that the first part of the trip would be pretty calm until Kirigakure but then they would have to go through some robber and murderer-filled wasteland. That was where Ren's talents would probably shine. ”Oh, I have a bucket of water and some anti-nausea medication ready.” he replied by flashing a bag of medicine that he withdrew from his pocket. It was indeed for getting sick but mainly he thought to use it for anyone getting seasick. Nausea on ships was a very common occurrence.

The Gurē family sat down to eat Shō's cooking and, luckily, it was not like a few years back. ”It's good! Well done! Can you make soba? I've realised it's my favourite food these days.” It would be a nice excuse to spend more time together. Maybe the three should start doing biweekly meals together? Might be a good way to stay in touch. He turned to look at An who had just asked him to reconfirm the level of the food: ”You're such a good girl, An - never change.” the youngest Gurē was to be protected and her first boyfriends or girlfriends ran through some horrible trial in the future to test their resolve. Ren had already thought about some options…

They would chitchat and have a lively and wholesome meal. It was towards the end of it when everyone was cleaning up that Ren had noticed something when going outside on the main deck. It wasn't a big ship and only had one outside deck and a bridge on the same level as the kitchen and lounge for people to eat. Most of the items were stored below deck. What was left on the deck were the transport animals and some of the crew plus some outdoor supplies or bigger items. It wasn't, however, what was on the deck that caught Ren's attention.

”Shō,” Ren called out back through the door and would beckon him to come out, too. He'd wait for his cousin to join him and would continue: ”Look up, that hawk's been flying over us for a few hours now. There are no small animals here and maybe it's just curious but… most likely…” Shō would probably know, as well as Ren did, that many birds of prey were used as messenger or scouting tools. There was a chance someone was keeping tabs on the ship. ”It might end up a troublesome trip through the mountains.” The blonde doctor wouldn't have been staring up at the bird but had been aware of it. It was also best not to scare the merchants without any concrete proof.

Shō's demeanour shifted abruptly, with a very serious tone and expression, he replied to Ren, "A girl would only affect the speed at which I draw my sword." However, before anyone could take him seriously, he erupted into laughter. It was of course a joke, Shō in fact harboured a genuine desire to find a partner but the dangerous and demanding nature of his job left little room for such pursuits. It was a bittersweet reality, but he found solace in the fact that he had his beloved sister and a brother-like cousin by his side. "It's not too bad after all." He thought as he watched his sibling and cousin enjoying each other's companions.

Having traversed the sea and rivers countless times, Shō dismissed the need for the anti-nausea medication Ren offered. It was likely more suited for An, who was possibly boarding a ship for the first time in ages. "Heh, don't worry about me. But An might need it." he remarked, displaying his familiarity with seafaring.

Following pleasant conversations and meals, Shō began tidying up the room. However, before he could complete the task, Ren alerted him to suspicious activity outside the ship. "Hmm… that is indeed suspicious." Shō agreed with Ren's assessment. Similar to Ren, he felt that their findings should be withheld until they had reasonable assurance of the situation's true nature.

"Guess we need to stay alert for the time being… Maybe I can make a shadow clone to keep watch at midnight while we are sleeping?" he suggested, placing the idea on the table for discussion. But given their lack of sensory or scouting jutsu, this might be the most practical approach to maintaining vigilance throughout the night. If no one raised any objections, Shō would create a shadow clone before calling it a day.

With a slight smile, An watched as her brother and cousin joked around, comforted by their shared experience. She couldn't help but be proud to be related to Ren because of his obvious charisma. She was relieved to find the food surprisingly tasty and agreed with Ren's compliments.

Her feelings of value were heightened by Ren's playful display of protectiveness, "Yes, Ren-niisan." She thought about having dinners every two weeks as a straightforward but powerful way to improve their family ties.

An's interest peaked as the topic of the hawk circling overhead came up. She went out on the deck with Ren and Shō and stared at the bird. Concern was aroused when it became apparent that the animal might be a scout or messenger. An valued Shō's sincerity in evaluating the circumstances and recommending a shadow clone for surveillance during the night.

”Chibi-An, don't stare.” Ren noted firmly but quietly. It was probably due to her young age that An wouldn't have known but, mainly, shinobi would avoid letting anybody see what they were or were not aware of. A big part of being a ninja was playing with and deceiving your enemies. Mainly it was about withholding information. There was no telling how they were observed, if they were. ”We don't know who is watching and it's best not let them know that we see them yet.” he explained in a whisper.

”A clone would be good. We are to dock in Kirigakure at 04:00. Leave a shadow clone and I'll make some clones, too. You guys sleep and I'll take tonight's watch.” Ren could stay up easily - most shifts at the hospital were 48 hours long when necessary and he had the knowledge to medicate himself if he felt tired. Also, there would probably be a chance to take a quick nap while all the goods are getting loaded off the ship. ”Ok, both of you go rest a bit.” There was a stern tone to his words. Perhaps it was because Ren saw a lot of death in his daily life and most his missions that he knew how fragile a human life was. It was best to try and keep his younger cousins sheltered - especially An.

It was a pretty calm night and Ren would patrol the outer deck while a couple bubble clones would be a floor below him with the cargo. They couldn't go too far from him but being a floor underneath gave him an advantage, and they were, technically, close. The blonde believed in working smarter not harder.

They were going into port at 04:00 the next day and the sun wasn't up yet. During winter time it rose a bit later so they would start unloading during the dark. Seeing as they had arrived in Kirigakure that was fortified and there was little to no chance of someone invading a village just to get some imported goods, Ren released his clone jutsu and stepped indoors finally to grab a nap for about 90 minutes.

It would take about three to four hours to pack and get the cows ready for transport and they would head through a part of Kirigakure and then exit again to head through the mountains to the Mirror Lake.

It wasn’t foreign to Shō though, having experienced a similar workload as a hunter-nin, he understood how Ren felt. The unforgiving world of shinobi seemed to be the same, regardless of one's specific profession. When his cousin volunteered for the first watch, Shō didn't object. "Thanks. And remember to catch some sleep, though." he reminded Ren, offering a pat on the shoulder before heading to bed, bidding his sister a good night.

An, inquired about any nighttime events from her cousin, wanting to stay informed, "Did anything happen at night, Ren-niisan?" She noticed her cousin's tired appearance and expressed concern, discovering that he hadn't managed much sleep. She pouted slightly, not out of anger but worry, as she informed Sho that their cousin hadn't awakened them for a shift change, "Ren-niisan didn't wake us to switch."

As the final preparations concluded, the caravan, comprised of merchants, cargo, and a trio of guards, set out through Kirigakure towards the exit gates, en route to the capital city. An, gripping her uchigatana, couldn't shake the image of the peculiar bird from hours earlier. Nervously, she voiced her hope for a smooth journey, "I hope all goes well," her voice slightly trembling, mindful that mountainous terrain could be susceptible to ambushes.

”Morning...” Ren spoke out once with the biggest yawn ever. The man was last to arrive back on the open deck – at least he thought so - since he took a 90 minute nap when they docket. It had been a long and somewhat boring night. Only one interesting thing about it. In retrospect, keeping clones for that long had just been a waste of chakra but it was strategic. Ren had a notification system in place between them and both of his cousins were more combat-savvy than he was. What had made most sense to him was to have both of them well rested in case it came to combat.

”Oi, Shō, I need to tell you something. Where is An?” he approached the (only slightly) shorter clan member and waited for the shortest clan member to appear. In a moment or so, Ren saw her emerge from below deck. ”Ah, come here!” he waved the snow-haired genin over.

”Last night we might have gotten a spy. It was just a bird but it was oddly curious of the layout of the open deck. I chased it off before it got below deck... so no teriyaki for breakfast.” Ren called noticing it twice before he approached. After all why would anyone suspect a bird that landed on a ship – might just be tired and escaping predators. But a couple things had struck him: only certain predatory birds were awake at night to hunt and this was not one of them; it travelled the ship systematically – like mapping it out; there was a treeline nearby so there was no reason for the bird to seek shelter on an unknows vessel. ”It searched the ship systematically, so it wasn’t a random bird. However, why map the ship if we’re continuing on foot?” That was something to think about. The nineteen-year-old would ponder on it throughout the day.

The trio had had breakfast but, honestly, Ren was tired. He barely spoke and just slowly but consistently shuffled food into himself while zoning out. The young man would then settle at the back of one of the wagons when they returned. ”I trust we won’t get attacked in Kirigakure. No one starts a siege over some goods. Wake me up when we get out again and if something happens.” he mumbled and made himself comfortable over some sacks of what felt like wheat and gave in to slumber...

Shō was awakened by An, who was worried about Ren not asking for a switch. "Ah… I see… Let's go and meet up with Ren." He picked up a bottle of water as he and An approached their cousin. Drinking in front of Ren turned out to be a mistake, as Shō nearly choked when Ren made the teriyaki joke. "Cough, cough, cough... Jokes aside, if we are being spied on, that's quite serious. I have a bad feeling about this…."

Putting himself in the shoes of an infiltrator, Shō considered the possibility of bandits using a bird to spy on them. If that were true, what was the objective? Stealing goods within a hidden village seemed both stupid and impossible. So, what else could it be?

Despite his best efforts, Shō couldn't come to a concrete conclusion with such little evidence. "Maybe it's just a bird… Never mind, let's have breakfast before we depart for Kagamino no Shi."

After breakfast, they set off on foot toward the capital, Kagamino no Shi. Seeing how tired Ren was, Shō decided to stay up and guard the whole night. The route to their destination was rather dangerous due to the valley's shape, but given the lack of important goods with them, Shō wasn't expecting any attacks. "The best chance to rob us is probably when we were at sea. We should be safe." He thought.

An listened as Ren and Shō discussed the odd bird and the possibility of being spied on. Despite Shō’s attempts to dismiss it as just a bird, An couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. She tightened her grip on her uchigatana, the familiar weight of the weapon reassuring her.

"Maybe it was just a bird," An whispered, her voice tinged with concern. She looked at Ren, who was clearly exhausted and added, "You should rest, Ren-niisan. Shō-nissan and I will keep watch."

After finishing their breakfast, the trio set out with the caravan, guiding it through the narrow mountain paths. The journey was quiet, with only the sound of snow crunching beneath their feet and the occasional murmurs from the merchants. An walked beside Shō, her eyes scanning the snowy cliffs and treelines. The serene landscape felt increasingly ominous, and the possibility of an ambush loomed large in her mind.

As they moved deeper into the valley, the path narrowed further, and the cliffs seemed to close in around them. The snow began to fall more heavily, reducing visibility, and a thick fog started to roll in, making it even harder to see what lay ahead.

Suddenly, a faint rustling sound came from the trees above them. An’s heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively reached for her weapon, her body tensing. "Did you hear that?" she whispered to Shō, her eyes darting around in search of the source.

Before Shō could respond, two figures clad in dark clothing dropped down from the trees, landing on the path ahead of them. Their faces were covered by masks, and their eyes glinted with malicious intent. An immediately recognized them as bandits. Her worst fears were confirmed—they had been spied on, and now the attackers were making their move.

"Everyone, get back!" An shouted, pushing one of the merchants behind her as she drew her uchigatana. The merchants, caught off guard, quickly scrambled to protect the goods and retreat to safety.

One of the masked bandits stepped forward, his voice cold and menacing. "Hand over the goods, and no one gets hurt. Resist, and you’ll regret it."

The nap Ren had was kind of cold but, honestly, after staying up for more than a day straight a few times and then doing the watch… and later with a full belly… the blonde Gurē reminded of a tomcat after lunch and snoozed peacefully on some sacks of hay. The teenager rolled from one side to the other as they travelled and the slight rocking of the carriage lulled him to sleep. His dreams were embellished by the occasional murmur of the merchants or his cousins but there was nothing else he concerned himself with. Why was he so comfortable? Well, years in service as a shinobi had made him cynical about surviving till a late age so he wanted to live every second to the fullest. That and he was with the other two Gurē. An was turning into an excellent genin and Shō was much stronger than Ren even though he was younger. The blonde would easily trust his life to his younger cousin if need be.

Eventually, Ren had fallen in deep sleep and only awoke by sounds coming into his awareness like from underwater. There was An’s voice telling someone to get back and then some yelps from merchants. The carriage stopped abruptly and that shook Ren out of his nap. The blonde doctor opened his eyes slowly and blinked twice before sitting up and rubbing his eyes. He hopped out of the back of the wagon and walked around to face the bandits. It looked very dramatic. The heavy snow combined with water density in the air made it look like nothing else was around except some trees.

”We’ll regret it?” he repeated with a big yawn that he covered with the back of his hand and stretched his arms above his head with a scrunched up face. Never had Ren ever been a morning person. This also meant that he was grumpy after naps. ”The only thing I regret is that you woke me up, dumbass.” he gave a throaty chuckle. His eyes gleamed with mischief and the youth lazily formed a hand sign. The bandits seemed a bit confused by his nonchalant attitude, it seemed.

Raijū Hashiri no Jutsu The blonde extended a hand forward and a flash of lightning came from it. Probably too fast for the bandits to see but a wolf (or big dog) of lightning sprung from it and leapt for the two men. It hit the one on the right first and then the left. The beast was attached to Ren’s hand by a lightning chain. Both men flew back from the voltage shock and were now a bit crispy.

Of course, there was a possibility of them getting back from it and other bandits being nearby but Ren trusted that his cousins would have control over the situation.

The user can make the beast go as far as thirty five meters before the user's direct control of it from such a distance starts to strain the user's chakra pool. This jutsu's deadliness stems from its unpredictability, though if the opponent is struck by the wolf, one will find their body rocked with a powerful charge of lightning, enough to throw a them off their feet and incapacitated.

Shō's instincts kicked in the moment the bandits appeared, and without hesitation, he moved to stand protectively in front of An. He knew she could probably handle herself now as a full fledged genin, but as her older brother, the urge to shield her was pretty much ingrained in him.

His eyes narrowed as he assessed the situation, swiftly running through potential strategies. Diplomacy was typically his first approach, if they could talk to the bandits, perhaps they could extract some useful information. However, before he could utter a word to negotiate, Ren, groggy from his interrupted nap, acted immediately.

Ren's lightning jutsu was swift and unforgiving, leaving the bandits no time to react. The two bandits were sort of paralysed, their bodies convulsing from the shock. Shō sighed and muttered, "You guys picked the wrong time."

With diplomacy no longer an option, Shō knew they still needed these bandits alive. They could hold crucial information, who knows? Maybe they were just the tip of the iceberg. Moving quickly, Shō activated his Ikō kekkei genkai, merging seamlessly with the wooden board.

He then quickly reappeared from their shadows and delivered two taser jutsu that knocked the bandits out cold without causing permanent harm. The bandits slumped to the ground, unconscious but alive, just as Shō intended. His enhanced Ikō speed training made everything happen so quickly that even the other Gurē would be surprised.

With the threat neutralised, Shō began binding the bandits with sturdy rope. "We'll need to keep them restrained until we reach Kagamino no Shi." he said to his siblings, his tone calm but firm. "If they're part of a bigger plan, we need to find out what it is."

The trio continued their journey, the atmosphere tense but focused. Fortunately, after the first reveal of bandits, no further attacks was seen. As they approached the gates of Kagamino no Shi, Shō turned to An and Ren. "I'll take these two to the local authority." he said, gesturing to the unconscious bandits slung over his shoulder. "They might know something we don't, and I want to make sure we leave no stone unturned."

He offered a small, apologetic smile. "An, Ren, you might need to take over my duties for a bit while I handle this. I mean the cargo. Sorry about that~"
