Mizuki followed Ren’s lead, keeping pace through the snowy roads and leaping through the trees with practiced ease. It was rare they trusted someone else to pick the route, but Ren’s confidence and familiarity with the path made it easy. They couldn’t help but chuckle softly at Ren’s response to their earlier question, his laughter carrying through the crisp air as they darted from branch to branch.
"First this year, huh?" Mizuki grinned as they bounded ahead briefly to keep up with him.
"And here I thought I was special." The teasing edge in their voice was light, matching the easygoing banter they often gravitated toward in moments like these.
When Ren turned the question back on them, Mizuki shot him a sidelong glance, their grin lingering.
"Not really, I guess. This will be the first time someone’s asked me to dinner though." They brushed some snow off their arm mid-leap, considering his follow-up.
"Hmm… if I’m not working or training i just like relaxing and watching the clouds." The journey passed quickly, the snow-dusted landscape blurring by as they moved. Before long, the towering gate-like entrance of Gengetsu came into view, signaling their arrival. Mizuki slowed their pace to a walk beside Ren, their gaze darting around as they took in the lively scene. The sheer variety of scents and sights was overwhelming in the best way—the aroma of spiced food, the chatter of the crowd, and the eclectic mix of fashion painted a vivid picture of the bustling port city.
Mizuki’s boots squelched slightly in the muddy snow as they trailed behind Ren through the narrow alley and toward the quieter entrance of the restaurant. Once inside, the warmth of the place hit them immediately, melting the lingering chill from their skin. The cozy, inviting ambiance drew a small, content sigh from them as their eyes adjusted to the dim lighting.
Their gaze flicked toward Shinichi at Ren’s boisterous greeting, and they chuckled softly at the chef’s cheerful demeanor.
"Mizuki," they introduced themselves simply, offering a polite nod when Shinichi spoke to them. The chef’s larger-than-life personality was contagious, and Mizuki couldn’t help but feel at ease as they followed the waitress to their booth.
Once seated, Mizuki took in the restaurant’s vibe—its mix of bustling energy and homey warmth was a welcome contrast to the cold trek they’d just endured. They gave an appreciative nod when Ren poured the sake, watching the steam curl invitingly from the bottle. At his toast, Mizuki raised their cup with a grin.
"To good company and even better food!"The first sip sent warmth blooming through them, spreading through their chest and fingertips like a gentle fire, a welcome contrast to the icy weather outside.
"Not bad," Mizuki said with a small, approving nod, their voice light as they set the cup down.
"Definitely beats frozen rations and cold water on the road. That stuff will keep you alive, but it doesn’t exactly warm the soul." They chuckled softly, their gaze drifting around the cozy restaurant before landing on the lively kitchen where Shinichi and his team were hard at work.
Leaning back slightly in their seat, Mizuki propped one elbow on the table, watching the chefs with casual interest.
"This really is a nice place," they admitted, their tone softening slightly.
"I’m honestly surprised you know the chef so well. He seems like a character." Their grin returned, playful but tinged with genuine curiosity.
"I don’t really get out much. I kinda just stick to the shinobi I know back in Kirigakure."They tilted their head, still studying Ren as they spoke.
"Did you and Shinichi meet through work, or is there some kind of wild story behind that friendship?" There was no mistaking the genuine interest in their voice, layered beneath the teasing. The only difference was that Mizuki’s interest kinda stemmed from the fact that they almost couldn’t imagine making friends with someone outside of work. To her, friendship and even love were tools for shinobi; genuine love was difficult to fake, but you could use it to your advantage to manipulate people to perform a certain way in missions. Gure seemed more genuine than that, at least he seemed more normal than a lot of Kirigakure shinobi.
