Chiyoko can usually be seen wearing her Anbu steel-gray flak jacket over a black combat suit, lined with chainmail, and Konoha forehead-protector band. She’ll also wear a long flowing purple and black patterned haori coat over everything, when in casual settings. Her favorite weapon, her lengthy chakra conducing tōken (sword) named: Daichikara Tsurugi "Great Force Blade”, is tucked on the back of a wide girdle belt. Her limbs are armored vambraces and shinguards.

For Hyūga Chiyoko there is no nuance, no negotiating, no mercy for those who threaten Konoha and are targets of the ANBU's orders - enemies, evil itself, only deserve swift death.  Her Nindo was conditioned from growing up in the last years of the Third Shinobi World War and the harsh enforcement of loyaties within the Hyūga Clan. Her blade and jutsu are governed by the ideal that true justice is averting massive loses by sacrificing the lives of the few wicked. She has no qualms slaughtering a clan or a team or an individual, regardless, if it means it ensures the preservation of the fragile peace. However, this merciless Nindo is not only reserved for external threats - it also includes threats internal. Chiyoko makes no difference from where the evil has come, whether another Konoha Clan Member, the Hyūga themselves, or even an influential leader - all evil deserves swift death. And she is serious about the "swift" part. Chiyoko does not enjoy killing, her Nindo is efficiency, accuracy, and full commitment of one's actions (regardless of the consequences later). She does not play with her targets, prolong suffering, or torture. Death is swift, and Chiyoko makes it her purpose to keep it this way.

But much like her profession as an ANBU - all this is hidden behind a well-behaved (if not coolly reserved) exterior appearance. Chiyoko paradoxically outwardly comes off as a sweet, calm, knowledgeable, protective, and patient older sister archetype to most of the other shinobi who encounter her. Always demure, studious, and insightful, she can be supportive to struggling shinobi (making her old Jonin Instructors lament she never became an Instructor herself), a call back for when she was elected as Iinchō (Class Rep) by her classmates. To this day some of her classmates still refer to her as Chiyoko Iinchō. This is all a mask, just like the real ANBU mask she wears, to hide her life as a weapon. Chiyoko has discarded the real opportunity to have a "normal" life of comradery, companionship, and community in order to protect those things for everyone else experience.

HISTORY

Early Life [988 - 999]

Hyūga Chiyoko was born in 988 to the Hyūga Clan’s Hyūga Heizō Bunke Branch House during the last years of the Third Shinobi War. Chiyoko’s father, Heihachirō had perished along with other Heizō Bunke Shinobi while acting as bodyguards for the Hyūga’s Main House, Sōke, Shinobi. The news reached Chiyoko’s mother, Himawari, a day after she was born. As a stark memorial to etch into her soul and to have her very name be a reminder of her destined duty to the Hyūga Sōke, she named her Chiyoko (血夜子), meaning: Daughter of the Bloody Night. The Hyūga Heizō Bunke were called so because of their ancestor, Hyūga Heizō, who was a famous bodyguard for the Hyūga Sōke Leaders and Heirs. With this heritage, one day, Chiyoko was told her life would be tied to a Hyūga Sōke as their bodyguard as was their Bunke House’s tradition. Filled with heroic stories of Heizō Bunke Shinobi of old Chiyoko started her shinobi training early under the tutelage of her uncle. Chiyoko was enthusiastic about the idea of shadowing a great Hyūga Sōke as they steered the clan’s fate. Little did she know that her relationship with the Hyūga Sōke would not be that of a valiant partner but, a cursed servant.

When she was 10 years old, in 998, the next batch of Bunke to receive the Cursed Seal Mark were branded. Receiving the brand destroyed her delusions about Hyūga Sōke and their valiant Bunke partners. Worst still she was assigned not to the clan heir, Hyūga Kayaku who was known for his leniency with Bunke, but the younger brother of the Hyūga Suhada, Urashi. He grew to be a cruel master for her and the other young Hyūga Bunke, often using the cursed seal to break the Bunke into place. One instance Chiyoko had beaten a Hyūga Sōke in sparring training, only to have the cursed seal invoked on her and inflict scarring mental suffering. This fostered a deep seated hatred for the Hyūga Sōke and an unyielding passion to break free of the Hyūga structure. But in order to survive Chiyoko hid all her true passions beneath a solid veneer of strict traditionalist filial piety. She became an unflinching exemplar of a subservient Bunke, respected, but also feared, for her merciless service to the Hyūga Sōke.

Genin and Chuunin Years [999 - 1010]

Chiyoko only really found a sort of freedom when she enrolled into the Ninja Academy. For the first time she encountered other children from the different clans. However, due to the conditioning of being a Hyūga Bunke, she was far more mature and cold than her more exuberant young classmates. Although she did get admirers from time to time, girls and boys, who were drawn to her "ice-queen” look, as one classmate confessed. Her diligence and strictness with her studies, however, had surprisingly gotten her elected as Iinchō (Class Rep) by her classmates. To this day some of her classmates still refer to her as Chiyoko Iinchō. Being an Iinchō had softened her a little, she was kind but firm with her classmates and even defended them from bullies in other classes. But still, she kept them at arms-length, the Hyūga Bunke conditioning making clear the defined borders between classmates. Meaning she never really formed close enough bonds to make true friends. As a Genin Student, Chiyoko was showing signs of being highly adept to the more tactical and martial techniques, going against the Hyūga stereotype and developing an affinity for Bukijutsu and Taijutsu. Especially with regards to swords.

She’d have to learn however, to be more open to others when she was placed into a Genin Team as a Leader. She found it difficult to be the comforting and guiding leader others were. Being a Bunke and having to guard her true self constantly had hardened her into a shard of glass that only reflected back what people wanted to see. Her team members would gossip about her strict training sessions and mission control. Even her Jounin Instructor was unsure of how to deal with her razor sharp personality. But the Instructor did notice her talent for strategy and tactical command while leading her team on missions. Especially during one mission where her team were escorting traders traveling through the forests and were ambushed by bandit wandering-nin shinobi. In the panic it was Chiyoko who held her team together, instructing them to hide back into the depths of the forest and then organized a counter-surprise attack. Her shadowy ambush tactics helped apprehend some of the bandits. But disturbingly, Chiyoko killed the ones she caught. The incident left a dark mark on Chiyoko’s reputation that has grimly followed her into adulthood. But, her management of her team in that chaos caught the eye of the ANBU, Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai, when she became a Chuunin in 1003 at 15.
