Zura did his best to stave off the moping as they journeyed to Area 16, deep in the southern reaches of Bonchi no Kuni. The whole mission reeked of a back joke–carted off to the back end of nowhere to play guardian to a pile of rocks masquerading as an outpost. But at least he had Netsu Midori for company. The dark-haired woman kept mostly to herself, her demeanor a touch gruff, but they got along well enough as they trudged toward their destination. Zura kept his gripes to himself; Netsu didn't strike him as the type to appreciate a whiner. [break][break]

As they neared the outpost, its sorry state came into full view. It was even worse than Zura had anticipated. They'd been told to do whatever necessary—patrol, construction, you name it. That's what he hated about this mission: endless work, no room for negotiation. They were at the mercy of whoever ran this dump. The lack of any real action, the sheer drudgery of it all, grated on him. [break][break]

The outpost, or what was left of it, was a sight–a gaping hole blasted through the brick of the multi-storied outpost greeted them, debris scattered about and already being reclaimed by nature. It looked like it had been abandoned for months. A lone shinobi leaned against the tower, a cigarette dangling from his lips. [break][break]

"Oi!" he called out as Zura and Netsu approached. Zura waved back, though he couldn't hide his disdain.[break][break]

"Great, reinforcements," the man drawled sarcastically, clearly unimpressed with being the sole occupant of the outpost. Without bothering with introductions, he continued, taking another drag from his cigarette. "First order of business: patch up that hole. Then you can tackle the rest of the renovations. Should be straightforward."[break][break]

"Yeah, ‘straightforward’," Zura muttered, casting a skeptical glance at the mountain of work ahead. "And the construction crew? On holiday?" he asked, the incredulity evident in his tone. The other shinobi simply shrugged, leaving Zura to wonder just what kind of mess they'd gotten themselves into.

Midori herself is similarly unimpressed with the state of the outpost as they approach it, showing some very clear damage from something she honestly hoped to avoid. A failed mission would be better than having a hole that big blown through her. She'd been somewhat bored on the way up to the outpost, as there was very little going on in Takigakure for now. Even if what they were doing was going to be busy work, it would be better than sitting on her hands and waiting for something to happen, so when Zura, a stranger to Midori, had suggested a mission, she'd jumped at the chance. She hadn't had any action since the last mission with the official sage of Takigakure, so leaving Takigakure altogether was certainly an interesting change of pace.

Midori frowns at the sight of the hole in the outpost while she and Zura are called out to by the guarding shinobi at the outpost, a person she considers calling useless to his face since he's guarding something with a giant hole in it already, but decides against it. So, they were to do renovations. This was also boring work, but at least this work was going to get her paid. She'd ignore the annoyance of the situation for now and pay attention to the conversation between Zura and the singular guardian of the outpost, leaving her to sigh when it seems that they might very well be the construction crew themselves. This would have been an extremely quick job with one of the Yamakira with them, but Hotarubi likely would be too high of a rank for such a mission, and she couldn't call him in for help right away in any case. He was probably too busy mentoring her younger teammate.

"Well, we might as well get the job started. Probably too dangerous for both of us to work on the renovations at the same time. You wanna do it in shifts? One of us keeps the cover up while the other gets the wall built?"

If the guardian takes offense to the suggestion that the lone shinobi isn't sufficient protection, he doesn't seem to outwardly show it with more than a dismissive sniff. Midori ignores him; for this mission, Zura is her partner, and this buffoon is practically there to sleep. He's likely sleep-deprived anyway; with him being the only guard on duty, he's likely been sleeping in random shifts, if at all.

"I suppose," Zura reluctantly agreed, eyeing the guard as he stalked off after their less-than-warm greeting. He shrugged it off, figuring there must be a reason why the sourpuss was stationed here alone. You'd think being isolated, he'd welcome a bit of company. But maybe solitude suited him just fine. Zura had already taken it upon himself to tackle the first guard duty, giving Midori a mock salute before setting off to patrol the area. [break][break]

The outpost was a mess, not just because of the hole blasted through the wall. It had an ancient feel to it, as if it had stood here for centuries. Yet, the rainforest was doing its best to reclaim it, vines and foliage creeping over every surface. Despite the chaos of the outpost, there was a strange tranquillity to the surroundings. The blend of jungle birds, insect buzzes, and the distant rush of water were the only sounds.[break][break]

"Ey, Midori! What do you think caused that big 'ol hole?" Zura called, raising his voice to be heard from across the clearing. Whatever it was, he hoped it would return so he could blast it away. A little excitement would certainly liven up this dreary place. He was still irked that they had been sent all this way just to play bricklayers. As long as it wasn't another encounter with those damned man-eating plants, Zura would gladly face whatever or whoever had created that gaping hole.[break][break]

Continuing his patrol, Zura walked in a circle around the area where Midori was working on the repairs. The dense jungle gave no visibility, but Zura figured anything bold enough to make an entrance wouldn’t go unnoticed by him.

Midori grunts as Zura seems to accept himself as the first to take over the duty of patrolling first while she's busy fixing the wall. At the very least, she's not the only one; there are other laborers on the other side of the hole in the wall, helping one another to bring newer supplies for themselves as well as building materials for Midori herself to use for the reconstruction project. She gets to work right away, though she's loathe to get dirt and grime all over her catsuit while she's working, which somewhat slows the process a bit while she makes sure to keep herself looking good. Regardless, she still ends up working enough to build up a bit of sweat on her brow while she's reconstructing the wall, starting with the areas just outside the hole, where it managed to bow inwards to the village. She thought she could see some blood on the brick as well, suggesting to her that whatever had done this damage had done so with its body.

So she's at least got some clues about what caused the hole when Zura calls out to her for some speculation, and although she doesn't know for certain what had done so much damage with its own body, she had come to one conclusion that she felt certain Zura might agree with.

"I dunno, but I don't think we're paid enough to take care of it if it shows up again anyways."

Midori herself is aware that much of Bonchi no Kuni remained uncharted, and for very good reason. Of the few animals that are actually well documented in the Land of Basins, many of them are capable of putting someone in an early grave. Not that she hadn't met a few of those deadly millipedes in a previous mission with the Yamakira, and had even managed to murder quite a few of the giant creatures herself. But she'd been backed up by not just one member of that powerful clan, but two of them, and she'd been certain that the older one had been close to losing out on his own fight while she and Hotarubi had been managing to beat back the smaller ones. She would have guessed wrong, however, on Zura's agreement with wanting to meet the thing again. And if she was honest with herself, Midori would at least want to see if she could take the beast that had managed to blow through a significant portion of the wall.

Zura meandered over to one of the dilapidated buildings, his boots crunching on the rubble beneath him. It wasn't as tall as the gaping tower, but it offered a nice perch. Scaling the structure with careless footing, he navigated past loose bricks and crumbling mortar, betting on his gut that the old pile of bricks wouldn’t crumble beneath him. Reaching the rooftop, he gave it a defiant stomp, grinning as it held firm beneath his weight. All it needed was a comfy chair and maybe a makeshift umbrella. [break][break]

With everything nice and calm, Zura decided to conserve his energy for inevitable drudge of work coming. But that didn't stop him from scheming on how to dodge those pesky responsibilities. Keeping a casual eye on the surroundings, his mind was already miles away. If anything were to happen, he figured he'd notice it long before it became a real problem.[break][break]

Idly kicking stray stones off the roof, Zura watched them sail through the air and land in the clearing below. His gaze drifted to Midori, her vibrant green and black outfit contrasting with the drab labourers, as they toiled away. The sight of them sweating it out in the dirt made him grimace–hard pass on that. The last thing he wanted was to break a sweat. Shielding his eyes from the sun with one hand, he pretended to scan the area, trying to appear busy while his mind wandered elsewhere.

Midori continues stacking up bricks, letting the more skilled civilians layer on the mortar between each layer of bricks, though the Genin herself is a bit annoyed that she has to focus on putting the bricks at a specific distance apart so that the mortar can be put between each building block. She catches sight of Zura playing with the bricks and the rocks that made up the rubble that had once been one of many dilapidated buildings. She rolls her eyes at him making a loud whooping noise as he makes himself a seat near the top of the pile, and she peers over her shoulder just to make sure his noise didn't attract any curious beasts, or worse, some kind of bandit that could survive in the harsh and dangerous wilds of Bonchi no Kuni.

Seeing little, she returns to the work of rebuilding, unaware of the slow-moving shadow that is gradually approaching closer and closer to the build site, utilizing a slow movement in order to avoid immediate notice. It stood to reason that it worked often on prey animals often enough, it just might work on the duo of Genin and the drab townsfolk that were busy laboring in the hot sun while the lookout seemed to have his mind elsewhere. Midori happens to take a moment's break to wipe her brow, starting to turn back away from the two foot tall wall she'd started on to see the figure staring her face-to-face now, both of them surprised momentarily, but Midori is the first to respond with a hard and smashing blow to the figure's center mass. Although she wasn't quite strong enough without the Hung Gar rings to break bones with individual strikes, it should at least get the strange person away from her long enough for her to ready herself for combat.

"ZURA, DAMMIT!"

Midori's harsh tone was definitely audible from quite a good distance, finally grabbing the attention of the civilians and likely Zura as well. Of course, it was entirely possible that he'd seen the approaching figure and had simply allowed Midori to get surprised; after all, she likely needed to learn that she needed to stay on her toes as well. At least now as Midori pulls the Hung Gar rings over her wrists that she can tell that the being she'd just beaten back momentarily was a human, and a human that was now drawing a blade to his hands from his waist and wielding it with both hands, likely some kind of machete that allowed him to get through the harsh jungle without dying himself.

Zura flinched as his name was yelled from the rubble. Scrambling to the edge of the roof, he peered down at the commotion below. "Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!” he cursed as he surveyed the sudden skirmish unfolding. Several figures spilled from the jungle’s edge. The labourers, caught in the surprise, had the sense to flee immediately, leaving Midori alone to confront the invaders. [break][break]

"Watch out!” Zura bellowed, already in motion, vaulting from the rooftop. In his grip, a kunai rigged with a boil tag. He sent in soaring into the enemy cluster, a quick hand seal triggering the seal. Instead of the expected explosion, a bloom of pink gas hissed into life–searing flesh and eating away organic materials.[break][break]

Touching down with a predator’s grace, Zura donned Oki Ini, his skull-shaped gas mask. Kunai in hand, he surged forward, a wild grin stretching beneath his mask.[break][break]

"This is more like it, eh Midori?” he cackled, hurling himself towards the nearest foe. Metal screeched against metal as his kunai met their blade. The attackers, mistaken the note for mere smoke, realized too late the nature of the pink gas, breaking their formation as it began to burn their skin. This was the excitement he had hoped for!

Midori, having an Oborozuki on her team and having already sparred with her a few times before, was well aware of the nature of Boil Release, so when she sees the tag come down and then flood the immediate area with a pink gas, she simply moves back a bit more and allows Zura to rush in while she performs some handseals of her own, a quick series of four seals before her hands become wreathed in a bright, neon green energy that seems to pulse and pound with her. She hears the cries of pain as their flesh begins to take incessant damage from the pink gas, and she quickly starts on her work of taking down any of the fleeing bandits as soon as they make a break through the cloud. The Kesshoton energy slams with a great concussive force, combined with her natural strength and the greater weight provided by her Hung Gar rings, causing each strike to be powerful enough to break some of them instantly.

She circles around the cloud, focused mostly on avoiding getting herself caught in the nasty stuff herself, and then on beating down and permanently maiming any of the brigands that actually manage to escape from Zura's own assault within the mist. With a few busted kneecaps or elbows, and at least one busted head, she decides she's had enough of them, and she forms another four quick handseals, gathering far more Kesshoton chakra between her hands and making a bright ball of light that, momentarily, becomes brighter than the sunlight.

"Zura, drop!"

She waits only a moment after giving her command, then swings her arms around in an arc, bringing the Plasma Release together into a focused beam as she rends the very air with a focused blast of neon green energy that cuts the pink gas cloud in half, as well as a few more of the bandits that hadn't been smart enough to try and escape the boil tag's range themselves. The air around Midori heats up enough that some of the humidity turns to water vapor before she finally stops the expulsion of Kesshoton, panting for air after having spent so much chakra in a short period of time. She flips that raven-black hair back over her shoulder and crosses her arms as she peers in through the pink cloud for Zura, hoping that she didn't manage to hit him with that final attack.

"Zura? You good?"

NAME: Bīmuburēdo [Beam Blade]
RANK: B
CHAKRA USAGE: Medium
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu
ELEMENT: Kesshoton
HANDSEALS: 4
REQUIREMENT: Netsu clan, Scorching Hot Wave Motion Fist [Shakunetsu-Hadouken]
DESCRIPTION:
Similarly to the Shakunetsu-Hadouken, after performing the handseals, the user forms large bundles of Kesshoton energy in their hands. Unlike in the aforementioned technique, instead of throwing that gathered energy, they'll bring their hands together to form one larger collection of Kesshoton before releasing that energy in the form of a much longer beam that can be held for one round before it overheats the air around it, making it far too dangerous to keep up continuously. Because of its short duration, it similarly has a very low absorption level, but due to its increased energized state, instead of blasting, the beam is actually capable of cutting through obstacles with its intense energy and heat.

NAME: Atsuki Ken [Heated Fists]
RANK: B
CHAKRA USAGE: Medium [Initial] | Low [Constant] to High [Constant]
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu
ELEMENT: Kesshoton
HANDSEALS: 4
REQUIREMENT: Netsu clan
DESCRIPTION:
Rather than expelling the Kesshoton element quickly in order to damage the opponent with a blast, this technique allows the user to cover both their hands in Kesshoton energy, causing them to glow with erratic plasmic energy that can add a concussive component to their physical strikes with their hands, increasing the power caused by their Taijutsu strikes to a level that matches the amount of chakra usage of the technique. Although their hands have a high level of absorption, absorbing such a large amount of electrical energy requires an equally high amount of chakra from the user in order to contain the energy until it can be released through Taijutsu. After absorbing that Raiton chakra or electrical energy, the chakra usage for the technique increases from Medium to High in order to keep the energy absorbed under control for further use of the Atsuki Ken.

The instant Midori yelled her warning, Zura’s instincts kicked in and he flattened himself at full throttle, bludgeoning himself against the earth. The suddenness of his action threw his adversary off, creating a gap between them as the attacker stumbled back. Though Zura couldn't see Midori's move, the world erupted in a blinding light, the air briefly turning oppressively hot and sticky, as if she had brought the very essence of the sun down onto them. [break][break]

Springing back to his feet, the scene was incredible. The bandits lay scattered, their bodies toasted where Midori had hit them, looking like they tried to embrace the sun itself. Zura was astonished by the immediate destruction and couldn't help but feel a bit sheepish about his own efforts. [break][break]

"Damn, that was wild!” Zura commended excitedly, impressed and a bit envious. He glanced at Midori, she was looking worse for wear. "You look like you need some watch duty,” he said with a wink.[break][break]

Turning to the construction site with a less-than-thrilled look, Zura sighed. No way around getting his hands dirty now, it was his turn at the grunt work. The workers started creeping back, giving the crispy bandits nervous glances.[break][break]

"Ah, don’t worry about those,"
he told the workers, waving a dismissive hand at their concern as he started dragging the bodies into a pile. Once the dead were dealt with, Zura ambled back over to the wall, playing the clueless card.[break][break]

"So, uh, how do you do this thing?" he asked, ready to milk the learning curve for all it was worth, maybe messing up a bit on purpose. Slow and steady, that's how he'd get through this bit of "work."

Midori gives Zura a bit of a proud smirk when he calls what she'd done wild, though the smirk disappears when he remarks on her looks with a rather less-than-flattering statement that she looks like she needs some time on watch duty. She huffs and blows a strand of her black hair out of her own face while she lets Zura get to work with removing the bandits' bodies from the pink smog he'd left behind thanks to the dangerous boil sealing tag. It wasn't like she could help even if she wanted to; the Boil Release would have eaten through her skin and her clothing just as surely as it did the bandits, so she'd have to wait for the fog to dissipate from the breeze that occasionally runs through the jungle before she could cut through it.

Since she was on watch duty anyways, she sits back and leans against a more sturdy position of the wall, watching idly between Zura and the laborers at their work and the jungle surrounding them. The wilderness was much more abuzz than it had been earlier, and she wonders if both her Netsu clan's signature kekkei tota as well as the fact that there might not be so many raiders in the undergrowth now, causing some of the beasts from earlier to return to their territories now that their surroundings were significantly less human-scented. While she works at her vigil, she wipes down her neck with a towel before tossing away the rag while Zura himself feigns ignorance in order to slow up on his work. Not that his laziness would matter too much for very long; the villagers were already starting to add in the stone that would act as the inner layer of protection for the wall, a heavy but surprisingly springy substance that would allow the wall to take a bit of damage and then bounce back, while the outer layer would be hard enough to be able to handle other types of siege attacks.

It was a rather clever build, and it seemed they were using some new materials and technology in order to upgrade this particular outpost to have it become far better suited as a military and civilian stronghold; they called the inner material "rubber", which was a somewhat strange-sounding name for a material. What does it rub, and how does it do that when it seems somewhat rough? She sighs and relaxes a bit more, allowing her body to gradually recover chakra.

The labourers’ patience was clearly wearing thin from Zura's shenanigans, their annoyance palpable. Yet, he loved it, maintaining a snail’s pace in his tasks and bombarding the workers with questions—half of which were feigned ignorance. Often, a labourer would just take over his spot out of frustration. It was almost a game to him, watching the labourers reach their boiling point, only to ‘rescue’ them by stepping aside to let them take over. Messing with the workers was way more fun than the actual work. He was there as muscle, not a mason. His job was to fight off trouble, not lay bricks. [break][break]
His attention soon drifted to Midori, who was taking a well-deserved break against the wall, her eyes scanning the surroundings dutifully. That didn't mean she was safe from Zura's antics, though. "Hey!" he shouted, pointing theatrically in her direction. "No slacking, miss!"[break][break]
After amusing himself to satisfaction, Zura decided to show some semblance of diligence. He made a show of laying bricks properly, especially now that Midori was watching. Laying bricks with a flourish of focus that bordered on absurd. Each motion overdone, showcasing his sudden commitment to craftsmanship.[break][break]
With the bandit attack behind them, things were slowly getting back to normal. It was a strange time for an attack, especially by such a small force. Zura couldn't help but hope for another attempt by the bandits—it'd give him another chance to really show them what he was made of.

Midori is keeping her vigilance dutifully, just like she's supposed to and wanting to put Zura in his place a little by keeping watch to see if any more bandits show up to try and find out what might have happened to their friends, but so far the jungle was gradually returning to its symphonic cacophony. What Zura does when he should be laboring has little to do with her job of keeping watch, until he annoys her by calling out to her not to start slacking, and her neon green eyes dangerously turn towards her mission partner with a dark glare. She watches Zura placing a few bricks down in the correct manner, but she knew that their standing was actually rather delicate until the mortar fully dried and hardened, and so a playful idea comes to mind, a way to get back at Zura for interrupting her watch.

She gathers some Kesshoton chakra in her hand, then slams it against the portion of the much more sturdy and undamaged part of the wall that she's leaning against, using the force and weight of her strike to send reverberations of power through the wall and toppling the short wall just as Zura starts to place another brick down, which would have caused it to clatter to the ground to join the rest. Midori whistles an innocent tune as she turns her attention back towards the jungle, a whistle she only starts in order to keep herself from visibly smirking at her own petty vengeance levied against Zura. She thinks she hears a twig snap, and her head rapidly turns towards the sound, focused intently on the trees a few hundred meters from where they're working on the wall. There was no way the horned tigers would have come this close to a human settlement, but it could also be another contingency of bandits. The kunoichi waits, focused hard on that location and foregoing a more pragmatic slow scan she'd been employing before.

Zura stumbled backwards as the bricks he had been stacking tumbled down in a disheartening heap. His gaze snapped to Midori, her innocence betrayed by that cheeky whistle. No question, she somehow orchestrated the disaster, fitting payback perhaps. But Zura wasn't about to let that slide without his own retribution. With exaggerated shock plastered across his face, he launched into a show of dismay.[break][break]
"Midori!" His voice dripped with feigned exasperation, loud enough for anyone within earshot to hear. "We're here to work, you know! How could you undermine the efforts of these skilled workers?" He gestured dramatically towards the labourers, adopting a posture of deep apology on behalf of his teammate.[break][break]

In an over-the-top show of contrition, Zura bowed so low his head nearly touched the ground with an overkill of apologies. He went about trying to rebuild everything with a frenzied rush and flair. He peppered his apology with smiles and nods towards the labourers, seeking to win their sympathy and perhaps a bit of solidarity in this feud with Midori. And when their eyes weren’t on him, he seized the moment to stick his tongue out at Midori.[break][break]

Earning Midori a touch of the workers' ire felt like a great victory to celebrate. Zura relished in serving his revenge tenfold. As he continued to lay bricks with an almost uncharacteristic diligence, a self-satisfied snicker escaped him

Midori frowns a bit when Zura calls out her voice in an exasperated tone, and she turns her head for a moment to scowl at him before a nearby bush shakes, instantly bringing her attention to it while Zura is busy feigning an apology. The only thing that happens, though, is that a small monkey-like creature clambers quickly up a nearby tree, having apparently fallen from its perch, probably in the midst of a nap. It didn't seem like they would be taking too much more violence for the remainder of this mission; the other lookout has wandered back over, looking at the tumbled wall and grumbling a bit before pointing a finger at Zura, since he was the one that was currently working on the wall at the time he'd come near.

"Don' jus' put the brick down right away, ya gotta let the mortar set and harden a little between each layer or the bricks tumble just like that! Now I gotta help ya if we wanna finish this by the end of the day!"

Midori herself smiles this time around, giving up on the innocent whistling bit and just calling out from her own lookout position towards the working group.

"Ya know, you really should've known better, Zura! Don't waste the workers' time, they wanna go home just as much as you do!"

She crosses her arms in front of her chest, keeping her head turned away from the laborers while she smirks to herself at the situation. In the back of her mind, though, Midori wonders if the bandits really hadn't seen that there was more than one ninja around and decided against going through with a counterattack, and instead just left their former comrades behind to be buried later by their own killers. It didn't bode well, in her opinion, but there wasn't much she could do about it right now. Then again, if their numbers were thinned enough that they wouldn't consider attacking them while one of the two was working, they were much less likely to attack them while they were traveling back to Takigakure. More than likely, they would be safe, and when the laborers return home, Area 16 will likely be locked down tightly enough to provide protection for everyone still inside. Their mission is almost done, then, with the laborers working much more smoothly than before in order to get the job done.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Zura muttered dismissively, his patience wearing thin as he shooed the construction worker away. Under his breath, a stream of complaints flowed as he turned his attention back to the bricks. Determined to wrap up the task and escape more nagging, he focused on laying each brick correctly, albeit with a lacklustre spirit. His earlier theatrics had backfired, earning him nothing but a lecture and a slew of nasty looks. Honestly, if his paycheck weren't hanging in the balance, a few of those ungrateful sods might have found themselves nursing a black eye.[break][break]

Brick by brick, he built, each one slapped into place correctly but with a dose of spite. The thought of bandits daring to return sparked a bitter wish inside him—to leave the labourers to their fate next time. "Bite the hand that feeds, why don't you..." he grumbled under his breath, his frustration occasionally interrupted by sharp glances thrown Midori's way.[break][break]

Time trudged on, and the last few hours unspooled without incident—no bandits, no wild jungle threats, just the monotonous rhythm of manual work. Zura silently swore this mission would be his last venture into construction; never again would he find himself trapped in manual labour.[break][break]

"All in a good day's work!” he proclaimed with a frown, nearing Midori. As the sun dipped low, signalling the end of their laborious day "Should we beat it before nightfall?" The prospect of spending a night surrounded by workers, who probably harboured fantasies of smothering him in his sleep, was less than appealing.[break][break]
