Hauled to Takigakure's dusty training grounds against his wishes, Zura found himself in the middle of a drab expanse. Just a flat stretch of dirt. The place lacked imagination, but it served its purpose, boring as it might be. A new genin had been roped into Team 3. Not that team dynamics were something Zura had much experience with—despite his years as a genin, a sensei had never been part of the package. Rumours of a sensei shortage buzzed, but that was neither here nor there. [break][break]

Now, with Team 3 supposedly gaining traction, a "suggestion" for a meet-up had been forced upon him. As Zura killed time flicking pebbles against the monotony of the ground, he mulled over the latest addition—Tokonatsu Kaoru. A name without a face or story to Zura. Yet, despite his penchant for dodging responsibilities, the powers-that-be made it crystal clear that escaping this one would be extra frowned upon. [break][break]

It was only sold as a meet-and-greet. No one mentioned anything about actual work being done. Zura harboured a sliver of hope that Tokonatsu Kaoro wouldn't turn out to be a total dud. Being stuck on a team with a dullard was the last thing he needed. [break]

Tokonatsu Kaoru

It seems that they had finally decided to assign him to someone to start fleshing out a new Genin team, something that Taki wasn't really good at right now considering the lack of experienced shinobi able to take over a group of Genin. Still, he'd been told to go meet up with his new teammate at a specific place and time and there was very little wiggle room to get out of it, for all he'd enjoyed being able to do his own thing for a while.

Oborozuki Zura, a name he knew a little bit about, primarily through Touwa's complaints about the older male, but he figured he'd see what his new teammat was about himself rather than make assumptions. Sure, the Oborozuki had set a skunk on his younger friend, but.... it was kind of funny, once the taste of skunk stink had washed out of Kaoru's mouth.

Stepping into the dusty training grounds with a jingle with every step thanks to the bells in his hair, Kaoru looked around for a few moments with a slight frown on his face, "seems they picked the most boring training ground in the village for us to meet," he mused as he came to a stop near the other Genin, "I don't think I've done anything recently to make them do that... what about you?"

As Zura waited, a pint-sized figure began making its way toward him, an unmistakable jingle accompanying each step. This had to be Kaoru. The kid was on the shorter side, true, but he was only fourteen, hopefully puberty had a growth spurt waiting for him. Or perhaps, this was it for him. As Kaoru neared, the jingling made him seem more like a character out of a woodland fable than a shinobi, nearly coaxing a laugh from Zura. [break][break]

Flashing his hand in a breezy hello, Zura grimaced as Kaoru voiced concerns over their lacklustre meeting. Zura’s reputation was definitely what landed them in this situation.[break][break]



"Oh man,” Zura replied with a carefree grin. "I’m sure they’ve got some kind of list.”[break][break]



Stepping away from his lean on the fence, Zura stretched out his hand, offering a laid-back handshake. Kaoru didn't seem to carry the air of arrogance or rigidity some of the other shinobi came with. He was far too young to be an izakaya companion yet, but he didn't strike Zura as dull company, either. Still, there was time left to be a letdown.

"So, any hopes for this 'meeting'?" Zura asked, layering a hint of sarcasm into the word. He was angling for something low-key, hoping Kaoru's idea of a first team activity wasn't so taxing.

Tokonatsu Kaoru

Blinking slightly at the offered hand for a second before realising what it was for, Kaoru offered a return handshake, undoubtedly showing Zura that he was much stronger than his smaller frame might suggest through the simple solidity of his grip. The redhead had some sort of understanding of the kind of guy his new teammate was purely thanks to Touwa's complaints, and so he didn't bother with the sort of suggestion that might have come from him if he'd been paired with someone more energetic.

"Hopes?" he asked as he put his hands behind his head and rocked absently on his heels, "I guess mostly to figure out a functional relationship between us so we can make a functional team for as long as needed? Last group I was with didn't really mesh super well with me, and I'd rather that not happen again." Here Kaoru shrugged absently as he looked the older genin over, "I don't know much about your abilities and tactics beyond the fact you can summon skunks, which by the way I don't wanna get sprayed by so you can keep that idea outta your head!"

Smelling that nastiness once was bad enough.

"Summoning does sound pretty cool though," he mused, considering what it would be like to summon something so it could do the boring things he didn't want to. Surely there were summons like that.

Zura's laughter echoed across the clearing as Kaoru brought up the now-infamous skunk episode at the academy. He had been scolded plenty already for that one. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together in his mind, revealing the familial connection between Kaoru and Touwa. He’d likely stirred up a storm with the Tokonatsu clan; their compound must have been a skunk-scented nightmare for days. The thought of the lingering stench weaving its way back to him through the village grapevine only added to his amusement.[break][break]

"Alright, alright, no skunks for now" Zura conceded with a grin, waving off the idea. As entertaining as it was to watch those critters turn the place upside down, even he had his limits when it came to their potent smell. Plus, after nearly turning the academy into a wildlife battleground with Kei's chaotic appearance, maybe it was wise to give the skunk pranks a rest.[break][break]

At the mention of summoning being a neat trick, Zura gave a noncommittal shrug. Sure, it had its moments. "How 'bout we kick things up a notch with a friendly spar? See what we're all made of," he suggested, the thrill of competition sparking in his eyes. For Zura, there was no better way to gel as a team than to clash in a no-holds-barred showdown, they would definitely learn about each other that way.[break][break]

He was glad that the no skunks rule went down so well, because he really didn't want to have to put up with that again, it was not an event he wanted to experience any further. "A spar huh?" Kaoru mused, his gaze flicking up and down as he took in Zura's form, trying to decide what it was that he was up against. Some shinobi might be reluctant to jump into a fight without any info, but that wasn't Kaoru's way of doing things. Instead the smaller Genin reached for his waist and slowly drew his Katana, the long blade sliding out of its sheathe smoothly before coming to rest at his side in a very casual stance.

"Any rules you want to follow? Jutsu use, equipment, declaration of winner?" He hoped that the Oborozuki wouldn't decide to end the spar at first blood, that would be really boring. They probably shouldn't fight until one of them passed out though, that would likely end in a reprimand.

He kept his bells as they were for the moment, he had no idea how skilled Zura was, but he'd figure it out as they sparred and find the point he needed to fight at to make the sparring fun for him.

"Alright, the only rule here is no aiming for a kill shot. Other than that, we keep going until one of us calls it quits,” Zura laid out the ground rules, his voice carrying an edge of excitement. He wasn’t about to let a bunch of limitations dull the edge of their spar; after all, what was the point if he couldn’t let loose a bit? Keeping things too tight would basically bench half of Zura’s arsenal, and where’s the fun in that?[break][break]

As Kaoru got into position, Zura took a few steps back, his hands reached to detach Oni Iki from his waist. The mask, with its grim skull design and twin black filters, now strapped securely around his face. He would not activate it just yet.[break][break]

"Ok, go!” Zura declared, wasting no time. His fingers danced through three hand seals, a grin slicing across his face as he kickstarted the spar without warning. In an instant, a clone, a mirror image steeped in acidic vapour, materialized beside him. Kaoru would learn how hazardous his double was if he engaged it.[break][break]

Zura planned on staying put, to see how Kaoru would react and then plan his next move from there.[break][break]

Rooted to his spot, Zura watched, eager to gauge Kaoru’s initial move. This was a chess match where the pieces could dissolve you, and Zura was eager to see how well Kaoru could play.

Using Boil Release, the caster creates a clone of themselves made entirely of acidic vapor. The clone acts independently of the caster, but is not able to utilize its own jutsu. They are made entirely of the acidic vapor, but appear just like any regular, physical clone. However, because it is made of acidic vapor, if the opponent does make contact it can cause severe pain and burns or blisters. Because they are essentially just gas, they can only be hit with elemental or chakra-enhanced attacks like ninjutsu or enhanced ninja tools, but cannot physically hit their target either. Upon the caster releasing the jutsu or upon death of the clone, it will disperse into a cloud of boiling acidic steam that can cause severe pain, burns and blistered skin. The steam from the dispersed clone hit anything within three feet.

Kaoru's own grin widened at the 'rules' that the older genin laid down, leaping forward the moment that he was given the signal to begin. Zura would hear the bells in his hair jingle as he charged forward, sword held out in a single hand even as the clone formed, seemingly unconcerned by the new combatant.

He wasn't particularly fast for a Genin, based on how quickly he ran, and it was entirely possible that Zura would have a negative opinion of his 'tactic' of running directly at his enemy, but Kaoru was still an experienced shinobi and there was more to him than what he first might seem. To that effect, he got closer and closer to his sparring partner, seemingly locked on to the real copy of Zura, waiting until the moment that the older teen felt forced to react to his bullrush.

In that instant, the moment that the Oborozuki started to respond to him with more than single clone, Kaoru would seem to flicker out of sight, jolting forward with the near-shunshin level speed of Shunpo to appear slightly behind Zura, on the opposite side of the manifested clone, the jingle of his bells the only hint of his presence before his katana sliced through the air aiming for the other boy's forearm.

He too was simply testing the waters right now.

Within the Step Method's branching techniques, the Flash Steps is the most refined for pure velocity and acceleration in one, linear direction. From the point of origin until the shinobi stops, they are able to move at an incredible pace, practically vanishing from sight. However, this is an incredibly taxing method of movement, and if used to move too far it can stress the body. It cannot reach the speed granted by Body Flicker, but it is not quite as devastating on the user. Traveling beyond fifteen meters with one step will cause great stress to the body. It still has a high chakra cost, but the muscle strain will immobilize the shinobi for one round as their body recovers. It is possible to utilize multiple flash steps back to back, but cost must be paid individually.

Zura stood firm, watching with a thrill as Kaoru charged at him, the younger shinobi’s head-on approach made the corners of Zura’s mouth twitch upward. Despite the imminent threat, Zura stood his ground, letting his clone stepped up to the plate. A decoy for whatever Kaoru had up his sleeve. [break][break]

The sudden absence of Kaoru, followed by the chime of his hair bells, was the only heads-up Zura got before realizing the attack was coming from behind. Reflexes kicking in, Zura contorted his body, his torso bending almost impossibly to avoid the blade's kiss by a hair’s length.[break][break]

In that heartbeat of evasion, Zura channelled chakra to Oni Iki, breathing life into the gas mask. Vibrant acidic mist spewed acidic mist, filling the area around Zura. The air around them erupted in a haze of turquoise and cotton candy pink. If Kaoru dared to linger he’d be met with chemical burns blistering his skin.[break][break]

Catching up late, Zura's clone pivoted to face Kaoru. An acidic punch was launched in Kaoru's direction. Rolling with the momentum from his dodge, Zura flipped into a back handspring, putting on a show as he made some distance between him and Kaoru. The battlefield between them was now a colourful mess.

Shi Onsen | Reactive (Low Drain to use) [break][break]

Oni Iki channels futton chakra through its filters, causing it to bellow acid mist. The mist which is expelled from the right filter is cotton candy pink while the left side is a sickly turqoise. If kept active, Oni Iki will create a dense mist which veils Zura (10m radius). The acidity of the mist is potent enough to cause 2nd degree burns with brief exposure. If one stays within in the mist for longer than 1 post their burns will begin to eat away at their flesh. This will also degrade any organic materials, and after 2 - 3 rotations, the acid will begin to rust and destroy metallic items. [break][break]

Slippery as a Snake | Evasion[break]
Zura is a prodigy of evasion. Using a combinations of hand eye coordination, reaction time, and evasive knowledge, Zura is able to weave himself away from oncoming attacks. He has an incredibly quick reaction time which allows him to move his body in a way to dodge an onslaught of techniques.

Part of him was a little disappointed that it was his bells that had given his movements away, he'd been using them in such a manner for long enough that he could pick up when someone was responding to them rather than before them. Still, if that made things more fun then what did it matter? He had just been hoping to be able to drop that handicap if he could and aim to go all out.

The sudden eruption of vibrantly coloured mist was an interesting one, and the redheaded Genin could feel it beginning to sting his exposed flesh almost instantly. He didn't pause in his motions however, his sword coming around to slam into the clone as it tried to punch him. Zura might have anticipated the clone bursting at this point, spewing forth more acid directly into Kaoru's face, however Kaoru had channelled chakra into the blade of his sword, repelling the chakra that made up the clone.

Which meant it flew, and far, launched across the training field with all the strength he could muster in his dominant hand, his unnatural strength aiding in yeeting the clone far away enough that its detonation would not bother him.

Still grinning even as acid burns began to spread across his skin, Kaoru turned his attention back to his new teammate, launching forward out of the haze as fast as he could, hoping not to give the older teen a chance to recover as he unleashed the confusing barrage of slices that was the Chikawaga technique, each flashing glint of his blade aimed to cause painful but easily healed cuts across the other Genin's frame.

The user emphasizes striking down the enemy with speed instead of power, dazzling foes with a barrage of flickering cuts. These nearly simultaneous attacks are not meant to split flesh with a single strike, as each cut only leaves a knife-like wound, but instead to overwhelm the enemy with sheer numbers. This forces the foe to stay on the defensive, lest they risk being carved up by the user's sword.

Zura's jaw nearly hit the floor, his eyes wide with a mix of shock and amusement, as his clone was sent flying through the air by Kaoru's sword—rocketing across the training field as if it were launched through a canon. The poor thing didn't stand a chance; it blew up in a spectacular puff of acidic mist the moment it kissed the ground. A smirk emerged at the corner of his mouth, this is exciting![break][break]

Oni Iki continued pumping acid around them, turning the training grounds into a vivid scene, Kaoru waded through like he was strolling in a park, not a care in the world for the flesh-eating vapour. Kid’s got guts, Zura mused, watching with respect and disbelief. The burns should've been enough to send Kaoru fleeing by now, but there he was, slicing through the mist with zeal.[break][break]

Kaoru's commitment to the assault was wild and erratic. Zura found himself dancing back, narrowly avoiding each chaotic strike with a grace that didn’t show how desperate he was to preserve his own skin. "Ouch, that's my shirt... and a bit of skin," he quipped when a strike got a little too close for comfort. A few others bit shallowly into his flesh.[break][break]

Close combat meant no room for his explosives—unless he fancied a taste of his own medicine. So, it boiled down to a kunai with a boil tag. He'd tweaked the seal to release a scarlet red mist, instead of the normal translucency, because if you're going to do something, might as well do it with flair. Kunai met blade as the partially transparent red mist mingled with the other colours.

A boil tag looks like a traditional exploding tag. The only difference is the middle seal reads futton instead of baku.[break][break]

ABILITIES:[break]
Upon detontation, through touch or remotely using the snake seal, the boil tag will begin to emit a acidic mist. Once detonatied the nearly colourless mist (the colour of the mist can be changed by altering the seal at creation) will fill a 5x5 metre area (1 post) and will continue to emit acidic mist for 2 rotations. The acid is potent enough to cause skin to burn on contact, and prolonged contact will cause flesh to blister.

Kaoru continued to grin broadly, though his lips had sealed over his teeth as the mist began to burn at his gums as well. He would have quipped back at his new teammate, but he had taken a deep breath to stop the acidic smog from harming his lungs too much as well. The burning sensation against his exposed skin was now starting to turn to blistering, and still he came on, his sword strikes lashing out in a pattern that Zura might be able to pick up eventually.

Of course, as soon as that pattern was predictable, Kaoru would change it immediately, having tried to lull the other boy into a false sense of security. Part of him was tempted to draw his wakizashi, or his jitte, but then at this point that would make the fight far too easy, which definitely wasn't the point. Even amidst the pain of the mist he kept coming, kept pressuring Zura, hoping the other would make a mistake... or even better, draw a weapon of his own.

So far the other genin seemed particularly adept at dodging and weaving, but reluctant to engage in a proper fight with him, which indicated a longer range preference. Well, until he'd gotten enough of a revenge for the current burns he was experiencing, he wasn't about to slow down just yet.

Pity he couldn't banter without risking burning his lungs. Hopefully his breath held out long enough.

Zura couldn't mask his bewilderment—if not outright amusement—as he watched Kaoru stubbornly advance through the acidic mist, seemingly unfazed by the imminent threat of becoming a walking anatomy lesson. The kid would have become a skeleton by now if he hadn't toned down Oni Iki's potency. Gotta admire the kid’s commitment. [break][break]

Zura made the call to cease Oni Iki's acidic mist. The filters on his mask halted their puffing. Keep it going was taxing his chakra reserves. The edge of exhaustion was getting closer. The sinister red mist from the boil note was all that was left to paint the battlefield as the pink and green would begin to slowly dissipate. [break][break]

Kaoru's attack pattern was unpredictable and erratic, forcing Zura to weave about like a leaf caught in a storm. There was no rhyme or reason to the slashes, only Kaoru’s will to advance. Zura found himself retreating, a step back for every lunging strike, caught in a pointy dance. He couldn’t find an opening for even the simplest of hand seals. Instead, he would keep up the tip-toed retreat until Kaoru had had enough acid. He could only deflect so many slices but at least none of Kaoru’s strikes bit to deep. His sweater, was becoming ribbons, revealing his torso underneath. Zura had really loved that sweater. [break][break]

It hurt, the mist against his skin, he knew that it had done damage and were this a more...dangerous fight he may have been dead from it. As it was, he was almost certainly in for a long bout with a Medic-nin and a vicious lecture. But then, if this was a more dangerous fight he wouldn't have gone so easily either... probably. Regardless, he now knew the bite of Zura's acids, which could only help him on the field.

Despite the large acid burns that had started eating into the layers of his flesh, Kaoru continued on his assault, finding himself increasingly frustrated with how adept his new teammate was at dodging... or rather, how Zura was only dodging, seemingly unable to respond in a way that would actually attack back. The fight had gone from interesting to... well... boring. And that made it much harder for the smaller Genin to fight his way through the pain that he was feeling, because he wasn't having as much fun anymore.

"Come...on... you can... at least try to... hit me!" he panted out amidst his attacks, grin starting to fall as he continued to dance across the training field, eyes beginning to water from the residue of the acid. He was starting to become frustrated now, unable to hit his new teammate properly during this dance of theirs, but also not actually getting a fight from him either.

Dull.

Zura couldn't suppress a laugh, even as the situation teetered on the edge of perilous. "Wish I could, kid!" he chuckled, sidestepping Kaoru's relentless pursuit. His teammate, however, seemed almost fused to him, his blade constantly poking at Zura's ribs. Around them, the red mist began to dissipate, the boil tag finally out of juice. He needed a new plan, and fast. [break][break]

Zura made a sudden dive to the ground, rolling away in a desperate bid for space. As he pushed himself to one knee, his hands swiftly formed two hand seals. Almost immediately, large bubbles started to form a field around him. Each bubble shimmered with a threatening acidity, ready to burst upon contact and coat anything too close with a mild acid. Zura knew it wasn't likely to halt Kaoru's advance, but it might give him the edge he needed. [break][break]

Breathing heavily, Zura felt the drain of his chakra, nearly running on empty after that last jutsu. He glanced at the kunai in his hand, the boil tag hanging from it looking defeated.[break][break]

"You look a little… melted, buddy." His grin was tight, edged with fatigue. Zura squinted through the fading mist, hoping against hope that Kaoru's resolve was as worn down as he was.
