in most respects, akane could be described as "pretty", in most conventional senses. she has a symmetrical face structure, long, sweeping eyelashes, and plump, rosehip lips. her hair is long, black, and sleek, and her eyes a dull yellow hue, ever-present and always watching with a blank, placid expression. if it weren't for the long, jagged, cross-shaped scar running up her left cheek and across the bridge of her nose, she could even be considered quite plain, fit for that girl-next-door look. alas, it is her cross to bear, isn't it? the scar, that is—two long-healed gashes, one coming up from her jaw and reaching the bottom of her left eyelid, and another coming out from her left earlobe, reaching right across her nose.
in terms of clothing, akane tends towards dark colors and convenient styles, most often opting for choices that are easy to move around in. she particularly favors baggy pants with as many pockets as possible and close-fitting tops, so as to not feel drowned in fabric, especially on particularly hot and humid days. beneath it all, she hides a whip-like frame, lithe but incredibly muscular with little room for fat. when threatened, one can watch her tense and coil, like a snake ready to strike.

HISTORY 998-1004 | the beginning
in 998, twins sayu and akane were born into a tense situation within a loveless marriage. that is no shock, of course. the momochi were not known for true love or compassion—primarily, the momochi produced soldiers, and having twins was a good omen indeed. from the earliest age possible, the two were groomed to become soldiers that kirigakure so desperately needed, given the tense situation between them and the daimyo. their birth was celebrated above all else.
akane's childhood was a tumultuous and bleak one. she knew no compassion or affection from her cold and distant parents, and each passing day pushed her further away from her twin sister. to her parents, akane was seen as the lesser half of her sibling, the runt of the litter. she was smaller, weaker, and quieter than sayu, and therefore not worth the momochi family's time and attention. with every honor bestowed upon sayu and each training session she received, akane's resentment towards her sister grew. she yearned for the same life that sayu effortlessly lived while she was left behind in the shadows. when both girls were enrolled at the academy at just six years old in 1004, it became clear that they were leading vastly different lives under their parents' roof.
1004-1011 | academy students
for years, akane poured her heart and soul into training at the academy. it was her only goal: to surpass her sister, to finally see her parents' smile upon her for the first time in what felt like an eternity. but no matter how hard she trained, sayu always seemed to come out on top, excelling in academics, training, and athletics effortlessly. with every victory, sayu basked in their parents' praise and approval. to make matters worse, sayu was also popular among her peers, surrounded by deep friendships while akane often sat alone at lunch. the fire of resentment within akane burned hotter with each passing day.
as a mere nine-year-old, akane was barely sleeping, consumed by a relentless drive to strengthen and sharpen her skills. her tiny hands gripping tightly onto wooden training weapons, she spent every waking moment perfecting her form and technique. her hard work paid off, for with each passing day she grew taller and stronger, surpassing even sayu in grades and abilities. this accomplishment would surely impress her strict parents, who had always demanded nothing less than excellence from their children. akane could almost feel the pride welling up within her as she pictured their beaming faces at graduation.
even so, come graduation at 12 years old, their parents embraced sayu first, and akane second.
1011-1013 | genin
days after the twins graduated to genin, civil war erupted in mizu no kuni. the momochi knew this day would come, even welcomed the war, but also knew that kirigakure needed strong ninja to survive this conflict. their eyes fell to the young in their clan, and akane and sayu soon became the focus of one of the first trials (an event unique to the momochi) to occur in this bloody era. a trial—fighting to the death to weed out the weak, for any weak link in kirigakure could destroy the chain.
it must have been some sick joke to pit the twins against eachother, but nonetheless, sayu and akane found themselves on opposite sides. there was a clear implication in this battle—one twin was weak, one twin was strong. looking into sayu's eyes from across a sand-filled training area as she drew a katana from it's sheath, akane made a promise to herself—"i will not be the weak one."
the battle was tough. perhaps both sisters knew that they were fighting to the death, and so they fought with every ounce of strength available to them. at some point, akane found herself beneath sayu, vision going black as sayu's hands held fast onto akane's neck. sayu only intended to strangle akane until she passed out in hopes that this cruel trial could end, but akane didn't see it that way. even so, for only a moment, akane wished she could rest, wished she could stop fighting. for a second, she did, going limp in sayu's arms.
then, as sayu's grip loosened, life came roaring back into akane. she had to win. it was life or death. she promised to herslef that she would not be the weak one. within a second, akane plunged her wakizashi into sayu's abdomen, and flipped their bodies around so that akane was pinning sayu into the sand. in a flurry of emotion, rage, and hatred, akane didn't stop stabbing. around her body erupted her chakra, the visage of a raven's wings fluttering behind her back.
she had to be pulled off of sayu. the corpse was dragged away, and akane was escorted elsewhere. as she walked, she met eyes with every adult in attendance, and finally locked gazes with her parents. she had expected pride, but saw none. it was something else.
drawn into a room to wash herself of blood, akane looked into a mirror. blood, as red as a spider lily, covered her face in patchwork blotches. dragging two fingers across her face, akane recognized that beneath the blood lied two jagged gashes, sayu's final gift from her own wakizashi, imparted during the struggle.
it was with a smile that akane recognized the look in her parent's eyes. was it... fear?
having proven herself, akane was shortly thereafter let loose into the civil war under the instruction of a jounin. her peers paid akane little to no mind—rumors surrounded the girl. she was bloodthirsty, a murderer, terrible. if questioned about the rumors, akane made certain that her peers knew that all of the rumors were true, even those falsified to malign her. throughout this time, akane came to know a truth about life—it was better to be feared than loved.
akane fought like hell for the safety of kirigakure. on the surface, it often seemed like akane had no care for the ideals of her village, fighting simply for the thrill of it, but beneath it all, she fought for recognition, and she fought for the safety of her sister's grave. in this time, she came to realize that she had not hated her sister—she hated how the world treated both of them. they had to grow up too quickly. in truth, sayu was the only person akane had ever cared for. the least she could do was fight on her slaughtered sister's behalf.
by the end of the civil war, akane had seen her fair share of battle. when the last blade had fallen, akane was promoted to chuunin, for the conflict had proven her mettle more than the chuunin exams ever could have.
