"Spectre" - Clan: Resented by the large majority of his family, he earned the derogatory moniker Spectre because of his lack of presence and tendency to fade into obscurity. At a glance, Higan is unimpressive. His shorter stature and lithe frame are not rife with bulk, nor does he look incredibly handsome. He is completely forgettable.
His orange-red hair cleaves from the general dark colored or white hair prevalent to the Sourei Clan, a stain left by his birth mother. He has soft features, other than his hands which show blistering, callousing, all the evidence of extreme training with the sword.
Higan's eyes are a lighter shade of magenta, almost red- and appear crimson in low lighting.
Mostly, he wears blue and white clothes, varying in shade depending on the occasion. His clothes are almost excluisively finery, a result of representing the Sourei Clan- whether or not he has their pride, they are strict about how they allow him to leave the compound.
There is an interesting scar on his cheek, which is jarring from his otherwise gentle appearance.

Quiet and reserved, Higan struggles with interpersonal relationships. All of his closest relatives or kinsmen are assigned mentors and guardians, many of whom consider him to be more of a tool than a person. Because of this, he also has deep-seated self-confidence issues and a severe personality disorder. His sense of self is tied intrinsically to the will of the Sourei Clan, specifically the Financial branch who have both heavily funded his lifestyle and directed the course of his training. A child soldier in all but the fact that he has never seen true combat, the Clan has asserted that he has no need for friends, as he has his family.
His morality, as a result, is many shades of gray. Because he was brought up within the clandestine affairs of the Sourei, who have been most recently returning to their secretive dealings due to the rigidity of the Mizukage, he lacks for a truly "positive" role model. His future has been laid out for him, tailored: his given purpose is to kill for the Clan. Understandably, the value he places on a life is determined externally. It may not be notable at first glance or upon first impressions, but someone who talks with him to any length will begin to suspect something is fundamentally wrong.
He has never had a "friend"- all of the students in the Academy were various levels of rivals to him, obstacles to be overcome, goals to be surmounted. His background in logistics and accounting has resulted in him seeing people as objects, assigning various levels of importance and value in what they have to offer him, and summarily dismissing those who do not "add" any.
The most complex human emotions are difficult for Higan to process. He has never felt the love of a parent, or lusted after a woman. More accurately, any time he showed signs of interest, he was punished- which has led to timidity, even fear of those feelings: it can trigger his fight or flight response.
His speech is abrupt, concise, and to the point. Many of his conversations are one-sided, by design, with all of the answers he gives falling into two distinct categories- yes or no, A lengthier conversation with the boy is unlikely to be filled with insight about life, rather, asking him about pleasantries like the weather or how he is feeling often result in drab, direct, explanatory answers. He is most at home talking about numbers, running calculations, and performing audits. If he had his way, he would simply lead the life of a vested merchant of the Sourei.
Above all, Higan can be considered cold, concise, and calculating. There may be a child hidden beneath the surface, but that boy has been drowning in darkness for a very long time. HISTORY Born the bastard son of Sourei Shunsuke, Higan's entire existence is a black stain on his immediate family's honor. Higan was born on the day of the Summer Solstice, when the sun was at its highest point. His mother was one of many whores that Shunsuke regularly visited, and the Financial side of the Clan paid the woman for her silence and quietly took the boy into their custody, rather than allowing for a potential loose end. Fostered without any real close parental bonds, Higan became understandably withdrawn and struggled to form meaningful or lasting relationships that were not thrust upon him by duty.
By the time he was old enough to walk, he was learning. Reading and writing, basic arithmetic. They were intent on grooming him into a scribe or merchant, something to make good on their investment. He spent the first few years of his life with strict mentors and harsh criticism forcing him to walk on eggshells and perform at an extremely high threshold for his age group. Many mistakes and failures were met with negative responses- which utterly destroyed his self-confidence. Higan learned from an early age, it was not his own worth that the Clan cared about, but his potential contributions.
At four, when his body had matured enough for small menial tasks, he was given duties as a runner on top of his studies, and he began to work alongside accountants from the Financial branch of the Clan, starting to learn the audits and inventories- under close scrutiny, of course, and never independently. He was beginning to find comfort in the security that this implied for his future. At least he would be safe, under the protection of the Sourei Clan, for so long as he continued to work.
When Higan turned six, he was able to perform the more basic duties of a scribe alone. Recording the minutes at meetings, standing as a notary at business dealings, even running the numbers on less important contracts. He earned faint praise for his efforts, which earned him the contempt of several of the true-born children. One day after his duties were done, he was confronted by one of the boys, who promptly attacked him. The adults were going to overlook it, but froze when completely by accident, Higan threw up his arms to protect his face, and the bully's hand went right through them.
One of the elders snatched Higan by the wrist and dragged him away from the stunned group of children, bringing him before the heads of the Clan. The boy was confused, afraid, worried that he would lose his place among the Sourei, the only family he had ever known. Once the grown-ups finished deliberating, Sourei was promptly moved from his former accommodations. They had determined there were better uses for him, since he was... "talented."
Immediately, he was thrust into an even deeper hell.
While his studies in the fiscal arts continued, he was put under the tutelage of several of the Clan's gifted users of the Density Manipulation technique, thrust into training to hone the strange phenomenon gifted to him through his Bloodline. They tested his mental sharpness, his depth perception, the speed at which his mind processed information, and they started to subject him to various degrees of torture, largely waterboarding and other methods that deprived him of air. His lungs began to develop more robustness and resilience, increasing his natural endurance to the point where he no longer panicked when he could not breathe. This, they later explained, would be necessary when utilizing the Kekkei Genkai.
Of course with great power always comes a terrible price, and the new form of training began to make Higan even more wary of others, and acutely aware of himself. As they started to train him to use chakra, he was also taught self-defense, and gradually, began to engage in combat to test and hone his skills. He was being shifted from a supportive role to the role of enforcer for the Mercantile Enterprises of the Sourei.
There was great debate about whether a bastard should be allowed to take on the important role of Enforcer within the Clan. It was seen as a great dishonor by some of the more traditional members, while several, more pragmatic voices reminded them that the Clan's Bloodline Limit was a powerful tool, something not many of them were born with- and despite their disdain for the boy's origins, he had something many of them did not. In the end, it was decided.
Higan was to be trained as an assassin, to further the collective interests of the Clan. The most efficient way to do this was to have him trained as a Shinobi proper, so when he was nine, he started at the Ninja Academy.
From the moment he started, he was not only unique, but largely ostracized by his peers. His competitive streak and his quiet nature made him largely unapproachable, and the fact that he viewed all of his peers exclusively as rivals to be overcome further put them off. He spent his time excelling in his studies, showing aptitude exactly as was expected.
Naturally, when the time came for him to graduate the academy, he did so with very little difficulty. He spent the next few years as a Genin unassigned to a team, waiting for an opening so that he could begin to go on missions. Of course, the Clan was completely comfortable with his lack of assignment- likely, it was always their intention that he spend his time performing his duties to the Financial branch, away from the Shinobi lifestyle. It even occurred to him that it was likely one or more of the Clan Elders had a hand in his not being placed. FIGHTING STYLE Contemplative and cautious, he has been taught to watch, learn, and adapt. He is quick on his feet, and his intention is to end an encounter quickly- preferably before it can even begin. Failing that, he uses his gathered knowledge of an opponent's weaknesses, exploits underhanded tactics, and any means at his disposal in order to achieve victory.
He is not as physically strong as many of his peers, which earns him many strange looks or unkind words whispered behind his back. Still, he proves effective in combat through excellent movement, quickness, and tactics. While he is not physically intimidating, his cunning and brutality are among his most noteworthy traits.
