BASIC INFORMATION

NAME: Dokuzetsu Itami
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
BIRTHDAY: April 24, 1006
VILLAGE: Iwagakure
CLAN: Chiyu
RANK: Adv Genin
POSITION: Genin Team 7
OTHER ALIAS:

害毒 (Gaidoku) - "Harmful Poison" (Clan): For the most part, members of his immediate family are against the utilization of harmful drugs or other substances for violent purposes Due to his fascination with them, as well as the fact that his mother died giving birth to him, he is called 'Gaidoku' behind his back.

APPEARANCE

HEIGHT: 5'10" | 177.8 cm
WEIGHT: 150 lbs | 68.04 kg

Itami is largely plain looking, with the caveat that his eyes are stained a deep and bloody color. The dark bags under his eyes come from severe sleep deprivation, which in turn cause him to look eternally fatigued. His pale skin hints at a vitamin D deficiency, which is not uncommon in his family. He has dark hair, and he seems to always have some kind of small wound healing somewhere on his body.

He wears baggy outer layer clothing, such as raincoats or ponchos on a regular basis, even when the forecast does not call for rain. His forehead protector is generally worn on his neck, over a strange necklace with the appearance of a collar. His nails are generally painted black, perhaps an aesthetic choice, perhaps not.

PERSONALITY

NINDO: To be perfect is to be unable to improve any further.

Itami is a strange kid.

Some of the time, he's off in his own little world. He spends a great deal of time jotting down notes in a notebook that he keeps stashed in his jacket. Sometimes he can be heard incoherently muttering to himself, though it can be difficult to understand what he's saying. He looks to be perpetually exhausted, but in reality, he's quite energetic.

Well, most of the time. Other times, he's completely languid, almost lethargic. His eyes become glassy and his words slur, evidence that he's probably dosed himself with some kind of opioid or sedative. Then there's the opposite end of the spectrum, if he's hopped up on mood enhancers, or some other kind of drug. Itami is constantly studying the effects of myriad substances on his own body, constantly striving to perfect his craft- and there's no better way to know the effectiveness of a substance than testing it on oneself.

Itami can best be described as inquisitive, deeply thoughtful, introspective, and more than a little eccentric. If the "box" is a real thing, he's always thinking outside of it. There are times when he can be insensitive or curt because he's functionally unaware that he's doing so- he has no social awareness, probably the result of having no siblings and growing up largely separate from children his age in his Clan.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that he's not unfriendly (if difficult to approach), he is something of a sadist. When others are in pain, he is more interested in how and why than immediately trying to stop the pain. He constantly looks for new ways to integrate knowledge that he gains into his studies, and perhaps one day even create poisons to rival the Masters.

HISTORY

From the time they are born, members of the Chiyu clan are brought up among the family, constantly reminded of where they came from and why their forebears left Mizu no Kuni. The Dokuzetsu even moreso find themselves reminded, due to the scrutiny and distrust of their Chiyu kinsmen. Itami was reminded more than any of them. The son of Dokuzetsu Goro and his wife, Chifune, the couple did not have a chance to rejoice and welcome their son into the world. Complications during childbirth took Itami's mother's life, despite the most skilled members of the Chiyu clan doing everything they could.

While he had no shortage of cousins, Itami had no siblings. He was raised in a household with a Father who resented him. This led to a fundamental disconnect, a struggle to make friends, a self-destructive cycle of obsession and striving toward perfection.

In the beginning, Itami was taught about the many herbs in the world, their medicinal properties, how they could heal and preserve, how they saved lives. From his earliest interactions with his kinsmen, it became apparent that the child had a gift for the Clan's Birthright. He was passionate about the study, to the point where he sought to test the substances on others, and on himself. It was when he was only four years old that Itami learned the difference between Chiyu and Dokuzetsu.

While dosing himself with a crude "medicine" that he'd crafted, Itami intentionally exceeded the recommended dose. He took note of the various symptoms that he experienced, from cold sweat to fever, nausea and vomiting, shivers, convulsions- until an Elder of the Clan noticed his suffering and hastily intervened. Itami was issued a stern warning, and he was sent home to his father.

Still reeling from what should have been a traumatic experience, when asked what he felt, Itami described to his father feelings of elation, excitement, and even joy. The rush of so many new things, good or bad, made him recognize how fragile that life could be. Utterly aware of his own mortality at such a fragile age, Goro determined that the time had come to tell his son of the dark legacy that set them apart from the Head Family.

As children, the offspring of the two families of the Chiyu clan live, play, and learn together in harmony to foster kinship, friendliness, kindness, and familial bonds between them that hopefully last for a lifetime. The ugly truth, though, is when the nature of the Dokuzetsu family finally manifests, they inevitably are ostracized, systematically separated, and carefully watched so that they do not influence children of the main family. Itami had actualized his brilliance- his thirst for innovation, the desire to improve, enhance, and ultimately concoct new compounds all his own. That they could harm others was of no consequence. Itami was told that he would not be allowed near his closest cousins anymore, and at that age, still did not quite understand why.

Within a day, the heads of the Clan came together and brought forth Goro to relay their judgment. Itami was to be monitored closely, both to see if he had the gift, and to see just how deeply his obsession went. As he was largely allowed to continue with his different experiments and natural curiosities unobstructed, he delved into the stores in his father's collection and began to tinker with and learn about things that he had been previously disallowed from touching. Again, he hurt himself, and again, he was healed. The process continued for some time before he started to recognize the safe handling procedures, identifying them, utilizing them, and finally, putting the poisons to the test on small rodents and the more dangerous species that flecked the outskirts of Iwagakure. He took notes, and as he did so, he started to come up with ideas. Tweaking the way that he administered the poisons to discover new responses was his first experiment. Then came the careful study of the chemical formulae, the bonds that held together the substances...

By the time that Itami entered the Academy, the Chiyu had rendered their judgment. Itami was henceforth to wear the collar that would constantly track his location, a failsafe of the main family against the Dokuzetsu as a precaution, should they ever become too dangerous. His skill in poisoncraft had come to rival the knowledge of some of the more prodigious, skilled Medical Chunin of the main family already, before he had even become a Genin. They also placed a seal on the collar that could be activated to slowly constrict and if necessary, constrict the airflow of the child if he ever endangered a life of his own accord.

Conflicted at the beginning of his Academy life, Itami not only found difficulty in making friends, but also with feeling happy about the opportunity or becoming a Ninja, almost as if it had gone from being something he was excited about to something he felt like was a chore, an obligation. He took his lessons seriously and dedicated himself, but found himself fixated on the proverbial cage that he had been placed in. With just a handseal, they could not only detain him, but cause him harm, and possibly even kill him. They could seal other Jutsus, be utilized to hold and store objects, and also be used to set traps.

Instead of dreading his life as a Ninja, Itami decided to embrace the study of Fuuinjutsu, with the same morbid fascination that he did his poisons. His brilliant mind took him through the Academy with significantly high marks, to the end of the Academy test, which he passed in order to become Genin. Now, he has been placed in Team 7, where the goal is for him to learn to work as a cohesive part of a unit and to bond with his teammates, something that his instructors saw as his weak points.

FIGHTING STYLE

Methodical, always taking notes, always attentive to detail. Itami has spent most of his life doing examinations over empirical data and testing relentlessly to ensure that the tools he creates are pure, untainted, and effective. The same translates over into how he fights. He is always looking for and exploiting weaknesses, watching for missteps, predicting outcomes. While he's not always right about how things turn out- failing is part of the fun, right?

His arsenal of tools and supportive jutsu are tailored toward underhanded attacks, traps, tricks, and all manner of nasty surprises. While he's not necessarily afraid to engage in close quarters, he recognizes that he's inferior to many Bukijutsu and Taijutsu specialists in that range unless he employs his equalizers... which he obviously has no qualms doing. After all, why would he craft poisons if not to use them! Where he truly shines is at range, where he can stack afflictions like cards in a deck on his enemies.

Itami's real passion in the Shinobi Arts is for Fuuinjutsu. From creative ways to create traps at his fingertips to ways to inhibit, cripple, confound, or otherwise disable the opposition, he has devoted most of his study to those techniques rather than to direct confrontation. They in turn supplement his poisons in creative ways, as he's always looking for a chance to marry two of his favorite things together in unholy union.
