Touwa stood in front of the Tokonatsu clan compound in Takigakure, his arms crossed as he waited impatiently for his father, Tadashi. The compound, with its pristine gardens and meticulously crafted wooden structures, was proof of the Tokonatsu clan's prestige. As a member of the Asagao branch, Touwa took immense pride in his lineage, a pride that often bordered on elitism.

The early morning hustle of the compound was a familiar backdrop, but Touwa felt a twinge of impatience. He had little interest in the mundane activities of the other clan members, finding most of them dull and beneath his notice. His thoughts were interrupted by a soft meow at his feet. He looked down to see Kuro, his sleek black cat, weaving around his legs. He bent down to scratch behind Kuro's ears, a rare smile touching his lips.

"Well, Kuro, looks like it's just us waiting," he muttered, his tone laced with sarcasm. Despite his aloofness towards people, Touwa had a genuine affection for animals and the environment, a value deeply ingrained by the Tokonatsu clan. He respected nature's balance and found solace in its simplicity, even if he harbored a particular distaste for skunks.

"And us," Ruiteki interviered, slightly offended by Touwa's exclusion. "Of course, and you," Touwa replied mentally.

As he straightened up, he saw his father approaching through the gate. Tadashi’s presence was commanding, and despite Touwa’s complex feelings towards his parents, he couldn’t deny the tiny bit of respect he held for his father. His father’s calm demeanor and sharp eyes reminded him of the standards he was expected to uphold, especially since Tadashi was well-known around the village and even his mother had brought up Tadashi as an example to him once.

"Finally," Touwa said, unable to resist a sarcastic tone. "I was starting to think you forgot about this little mission." Still bitter about Tadashi's treatment on the day of the Genin Exam.

He was running a little late for their mission, but that was because he had a good reason. Tadashi had news for Touwa and it dealt with how their dynamic together worked. When Touwa graduated from the academy Tadashi felt like his son was leaving him and they were gonna grow distant again. He didn't want this and despite his love for his position at the academy, he wasn't about to stay and let his son leave him behind. So he filled out some paperwork and it was only now that it got approved and just in time for a mission with Touwa too![break][break]

Reaching the compound Tadashi would apologize for being late. "Sorry about that Touwa I had a few things to take care of before heading over here," Tadashi would say smiling at his son as he pulled out a scroll for Touwa. "I have this message for you in regards to the genin team you have been assigned to and I am lucky enough to be delivering it to you!" Tadashi would say with a bit too much excitement behind his voice. He didn't want to tell Touwa straight out and instead wanted to surprise him with the message inside which explained how he would from this day forward his team lead.[break][break]

"Surprise!" Tadashi would say giving his son a pat on the back after he read the scroll. "Looks like we will be spending a bit more time together now!" Tadashi would feel proud of himself for being able to accomplish this and hoped Touwa would feel the same for getting to spend more time with him.

Touwa stood in stunned silence, the scroll hanging loosely from his fingers as he processed the information. He had anticipated many things, but this development had caught him entirely off guard. His father, his team leader? The news was unexpected, and he wasn't quite sure how to feel about it. He felt a mix of emotions – confusion, reluctance, and perhaps a faint glimmer of something that might have been a relief. He quickly masked his feelings with a facade of indifference.

"Well, that’s certainly... unexpected," Touwa muttered, his tone carefully controlled to reveal nothing of his inner turmoil. He glanced at his father, who was beaming with an enthusiasm that Touwa found both baffling and slightly endearing. Despite his complicated feelings towards his father, Touwa couldn’t entirely dismiss the significance of the gesture.

"Looks like we'll be working together then," he said, managing a casual shrug. "Just try to keep up," he added, his voice tinged with his usual sarcasm. Touwa knew this was a significant change, and he would need to adapt quickly. But he wouldn’t let his father see any hesitation.

Kuro meowed again, breaking the tension. Touwa reached down to scratch behind the cat’s ears once more, taking a moment to collect his thoughts. He could sense Ruiteki’s silent encouragement in the back of his mind, a comforting presence that helped him steady himself.

"Alright, let’s get moving," Touwa said, turning towards the direction of the cave system. He started walking as if the mere act of moving forward could help him sort through the conflicting thoughts swirling in his head.

HJe was a tad disappointed Touwa didn't seem as excited about this little change of his position. He thought maybe by switching to his genin team lead the two could bond more than they had while Touwa was growing up to make up for lost time plus it meant he would be able to go on missions again which meant he could also take his son to new places more often now. So when he seemed rather the same in expression Tadashi couldn't help but feel maybe doing such a thing was a bad idea. Sure their team still would have needed a leader, but wouldn't having your father help make the transition easier?[break][break]

Touwa did seem rather eager to get the mission moving though so that was nice and despite Tadashi being the lead for the mission he didn't mind letting Touwa lead the charge for once. After all, he would if he ranked up to chunin eventually so getting a little experience leading someone wouldn't be too bad of a thing for him to have under his belt. Of course, Tadashi wasn't going to let Touwa do all the heavy lifting, but for a bit, he would let his son give him orders a bit just to appease him. So follow along he would as they went through the caves that would lead them out of the village.

The cave system was the only exit out of Takigakure, a labyrinthine passage known intimately by the village's shinobi. The dark, twisting tunnels were a natural defense, with guards posted both within the village and at the cave's exit. Nearing the entrance of the cave system, Touwa and Tadashi nodded to the guards stationed at various points. These guards, familiar with their roles, scrutinized every passerby. As members of the Tokonatsu and Hotaru clans respectfully, Touwa and his father received respectful nods but were still subject to the same thorough checks as everyone else the black familiar included. Which the cat did not appreciate as he hissed at the guards.

Navigating the caves, Touwa felt a mix of confidence and tension. The path was uneven, with stalactites hanging ominously from the ceiling and stalagmites jutting up from the ground. The air was cool and damp, and the sound of dripping water echoed around them.
As they approached the exit of the cave system, the light at the end of the tunnel grew brighter. They passed the final checkpoint, where guards scrutinized their identities one last time. The guards, recognizing Tadashi and Touwa, offered them respectful nods but still performed their duty with no expectations.

Once through the checkpoint, they stepped out into the open. The transition from the cool, damp cave to the warm, humid jungle was abrupt. The thick canopy above filtered the sunlight, casting dappled shadows on the ground. The air was alive with the sounds of insects and distant animal calls. Touwa took a moment to orient himself, then turned north toward the Nanba Zensho outpost.

"Alright, we need to head north," Touwa said confidently. "We should reach the outpost in a few days if we keep a steady pace?" He was unsure of the time because it was his first time out of Takigakure, not counting the Genin Exam.

Leaving the village through the cave system was always a surreal experience for Tadashi. Not because he didn't know it or anything it just felt so surreal each time seeing how the cave naturally changed as erosion happened it made for some fascinating changes to how the tunnels looked. Plus since he rarely ever got to use them since becoming a teacher at the academy it was always fun for him to spot the difference from each visit he took through them. He would look around the cave with a smile on his face probably looking a bit strange to Touwa and maybe to the guards who checked them to make sure they were who they were, but honestly, Tadashi didn't care.[break][break]

He was having the time of his life spending time with his son and even if this mission wouldn't be something too exciting he would get to see how his son grew and acted during a mission and that was just so exciting to Tadashi. "Lead the way, captain!" Tadashi would say giving his son a salute after Touwa gave the directions which they needed to go to the outpost. Of course, Tadashi wouldn't let Touwa fail this mission either even if he was letting him lead the way he wouldn't be a good father if he did that. No, he would be the backup to help fix any issues the two ran into along the mission, but honestly, he felt it would be a fairly simple mission for his son to accomplish that he probably could have done on his own.

After a few hours of walking, they took a brief rest near a small stream. Touwa knelt to refill their canteens, looking at his father, who appeared completely relaxed. Kuro was also enjoying a refreshing drink from the stream next to Touwa. Despite himself, Touwa's curiosity got the best of him. "Not that it's important, but what are the chances of us getting into trouble on the way to Nanba Zensho?" he inquired, attempting to sound casual.

After the brief rest stop, it was time to continue steadily toward their destination. The path ahead was still long, and they needed to find a suitable camping spot before nightfall.

He couldn't stop smiling at Touwa's adorable reactions as they were a sign of him growing up. An obvious teenager Tadashi was doing his duty as a father and slightly embarrassed his son while still being supportive and there for him. A mission successful if he could say so himself, but on to the actual mission at hand. [break][break]

Traversing the jungle came fairly easy to Tadashi since he had been through these jungles many times before, but it did give him a sort of Deja Vu following Touwa during his graduation exam. Sure he was a bird during that exam and couldn't actually help his son if things went bad, but at least now he was free to be himself while also watching over his growing boy. Though he had to admit when Touwa decided to engage in conversation Tadashi was a bit surprised. He was always under the impression unless it was in class the two wouldn't talk much to each other so the fact he was willing to talk to him gave Tadashi a lot of joy![break][break]

"About as any chance one has leaving a village so it's not impossible," Tadashi said simply. There was no telling if a mission would get sidetracked because of bandits or if it would go so smoothly that it would be a simple stroll through the jungle. There were too many variables to accurately predict something like that. "We might get a bit of trouble around Area 16, but other than that we should be fine overall," Tadashi would also add giving his son a shrug before continuing, "So long as we stay alert though I'm sure we will be fine." A small smirk appeared on his face as Tadashi stood and gave his arms a slight pat while he flexed them, "Besides you will have your old man helping you so don't be worried I'll make sure you stay safe on this mission." A little bit of his confidence shone through as he took a little pride in his abilities to protect his son from any dangers that might befall him.

This is all Tadashi wanted. Time to spend with his son to make up for being absent so much as he grew up. It wasn't like he chose to be away from Touwa's development it was just how fate decided for them. Plus with the strain of Yuakri and his relationship, it made sense there was a fragility to him having a good bond with his son too. There were many times when Tadashi wished he could go back and time and fix the mistakes he made and try to be closer to both Yukari and Touwa. Yet now he was forced to live with both the guilt and turmoil that it was always his fault for why their family had begun falling apart. At least now he could try and mend the broken bonds that formed between them all.[break][break]

After some time they would set up camp in a rather decent location for them to rest up though it could prove dangerous if they weren't careful as they were still out in the open. This seemed to ring true to Touwa too as he mentioned how close they were to Area 16 and honestly, Tadashi almost felt they should have continued to Area 16 at least there they would be guaranteed to be safe with the amount of shinobi that helped guard the area. This would mean they might have to traverse most of the night though so maybe it was better they rested after all they needed to be fully alert in case anything or anyone decided to ambush them.[break][break]

Touwa's question about Tadashi's reason for this mission choice did kind of startle him a bit. It was a bit embarrassing, but he wanted it to be one where the two of them could bond more, and a simple help at a military outpost, while a shuffling of the guards happened, seemed like a good opportunity to do that. He could have been dishonest in his reasonings and given some fantastical lie about how much he thinks it's some grand mission for his son to overcome or some lesson to help teach him the intricacies of being a shinobi, but he decided to be honest with his words instead.[break][break]

"I simply wanted to spend time with you Touwa and this seemed like the easiest way to do it," looking up to the sky feeling a bit nervous about how Touwa would respond to his honesty he would add, "Sorry if that seemed like an overstepping of your boundaries." He would give off a nervous chuckle as he would look away from Touwa as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it to take a puff from it. He didn't do it very often and honestly, he normally wouldn't do it around his son, but he was growing up so fast and Tadashi could use the distraction of the nicotine to calm any nerves he had right now.[break][break]

When Touwa would volunteer for the first watch Tadashi couldn't help and felt this wasn't right. While he was certain his son was talented enough to keep a good eye to keep watch he didn't want him to overexert himself. Not yet at least. He wouldn't tell Touwa this so he would simply rest his eyes instead of sleeping. He figured this was the best option as it meant Tadashi could keep an eye on Touwa while his son kept an eye on the world around them. "Alright then well goodnight," Tadashi would say putting out his cigarette lying down on the ground and closing his eyes after a deep breath.

His son didn't respond to his truthful admission as to why he chose the mission and honestly, this sort of hurt Tadashi a bit. Tadashi wanted to hear what Touwa thought about this whole thing. The two didn't communicate much outside the classroom and it felt like there was a wall between the two of them and all Tadashi wanted to do was break down this wall. Sure there were some cracks or dents in it with each of Tadashi's attempts, but he wondered if maybe he was the only one making the effort anymore. Was he too late? Had he ignored the signs for too long and now Touwa simply didn't want those walls to come down putting up more each time Tadashi even got remotely close to breaking one down. No, he couldn't think like that he needed to persevere. Even if things didn't turn out ok in the long run if he could get his son to be more open about his feelings towards him good or bad he would deal with the consequences. [break][break]

Time would fly and soon it would be Tadashi's turn to keep watch and he would do so constantly looking back at Touwa to make sure he was safe. A small smile would appear on his face thinking of how he missed the days when he was younger. When he could sometimes check up on him while he slept thinking of what kind of dreams he may be having. He never shared this with Yukari or Touwa since he didn't want to overstep how they raised Touwa, but he couldn't help but miss the days when he was tiny and how he wished he could have been more present during those times. He would spend the majority of the night merely reflecting on his life choices and wondering if he could have done things differently and how he would do them.[break][break]

Morning came and Touwa would be awoken by sunlight and greet Tadashi. A smile on Tadashi's face as he gave his son a smile and morning right back doing his best to hide how tired he was. Having technically been up the whole night he didn't get any actual sleep, but it wasn't like he hadn't done this before. He would be fine though he would need to get some sleep once they returned to the village once their mission was complete. Well at least that was the plan originally, but after a few days of a similar routine Tadashi found himself sleeping during the night like normal giving him the energy to continue like normal. So he only had one sleepless night and that did mean things were going a lot smoother than expected. [break][break]

Once they reached the outskirts of Nanba Zenshō Tadashi would begin taking the lead again. Since this outpost was a discreet one they needed to be careful on how they approached people and the guards. Once they were all checked in Tadashi would return to Touwa and give him their orders for the remainder of the mission. "We are mostly just going to be keeping an eye around for any disturbances and patrolling," Tadashi would tell Touwa as he put away his shinobi headband, "they want us to look like tourists to not be suspecting to the locals so think of this as a small vacation from the village a bit."

Their patrol was fairly uneventful overall. So Tadashi mostly took it as an indeed vacation that he could enjoy with Touwa, but the boy seemed distant and more focused on the mission than anything. Despite this Tadashi wasn't going to give up on making this a fun experience. Pushing himself forward into his guise he would dote on Touwa whenever he could to some of the merchants when they looked around at goods saying how he was looking for something for his son to give to his mother. Probably embarrassed Touwa in the process, but that was his job as his father after all.[break][break]

When they finally did get some info about possible troublemakers Tadashi would jump into action. Well not literally he would excuse himself to a public restroom and once it was empty he would use his shadow clone jutsu and then have the clones transform into various people. They each would come out at different intervals like regular people and spread out about Nanba Zenshō to keep multiple eyes out for them. Playing true to his name of being a one-man army he was gonna use these clones as a way to defend the outpost himself. He would do this every day they were there with different personas to keep things different each day.[break][break]
