hidden cloud mission board vol. 3.0: shimagame expedition! "not all who wander are lost." For many years a legend has circulated amongst the sailors and fishermen of Kaminari no Kuni of a great beast that occupies the waters off the northern coast. Though reportedly gargantuan in size, none have been able to identify the beast’s location, caught only in glimpses through heavy mist before disappearing through the waves. With the recent improvements made to Kumogakure’s naval forces and the stronger protections implemented to our maritime borders, the time has come to make contact with the beast, and understand its true nature once and for all. Shinobi from allied nations are able to participate in these missions. c-rank missions. LAND HO! MISSION RANK: C NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: The first stage of the expedition is to chart the waters in which the beast is commonly sighted. Sail out from the northern shores with a small team of cartographers to map the open sea and understand the beast’s movement patterns. Report back with as much information as you can gather on the estimated size and nature of the beast, as well as the ocean surrounding it. Be cautious—legend states that many dangerous animals make their home on and around the creature, so danger may be present in the form of aggressive and unnaturally large giant squids, sharks, or sea serpents. Ensure that you and the cartographers make it back safely! This mission can be completed twice. 1. Open 2. Open TURTLE RESCUE MISSION RANK: C NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: While charting the waters, a number of small young turtles have been sighted on islets along Shimagame’s natural migratory path. The turtles seem to be attempting to swim to Shimagame when the beast draws near, but they aren’t able to finish the journey! This may be key to unlocking the secret of the nature of the great beast—locate the wayward turtles, and ensure that they make it safely back home. Some of the islets and their coastal waters may be home to massive seabirds or deadly sharks seeking to make the turtles their next meal, so be cautious when disembarking! This mission is repeatable. Completion may allow IC acquisition of a turtle familiar. 1. Open 2. Open 3. Open ECOLOGICAL SURVEY MISSION RANK: C NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: Now that we can reliably make it to Shimagame’s shores, the time has come to do a thorough ecological survey of the creature. With a small team of botanists and animal scientists, break ground and begin mapping out the island: flora, fauna, and topography must all be cataloged. Demonstrate caution, and avoid disturbing or interacting with the wildlife as much as possible: stealth is critical to the success of the mission, and the size and lethality of the beasts that make this island their home is still unknown to us. In the event of danger: run! This mission can be completed twice. 1. Open 2. Open THE FALLS OF TRUTH MISSION RANK: Variable. For genin, C-rank; for chuunin, B-rank; for sp. jounin and jounin, A-rank. NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional, but recommended. PARTICIPANTS: 1-3 DESCRIPTION: On Shimagame there is a grand, beautiful waterfall; the immediate area is a verdant, tranquil paradise. Mysteriously, a man-made platform is located at the base of the falls. When one sits on that platform and concentrates, they are met with a vision, seemingly transported into the confines of their own mind, and the waterfall becomes a mirror which reflects one’s true self. Though disconcerting, this provides a uniquely potent training opportunity, the chance to face one’s inner demons and come out stronger for the effort. If claiming the mission with two PCs or more: only one person may be engaged with The Falls of Truth at a time. Their companions may be occupied by defending the meditator from the island’s beasts, or PCs may take turns meditating at the falls, whatever works best for your mission’s narrative. The variable rank is intended to allow for higher-ranking shinobi to face greater challenges both against their own psyche and against the dangers of the island, though chuunin+ may choose to claim this mission as a C-rank if they so prefer. GENBU, GUARDIAN OF THE NORTH MISSION RANK: B NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: Our surveys and reports gathered on Shimagame have revealed that the great island turtle is not just an oversized beast: his name is Genbu and he’s sentient, much like the animals of a summons contract, and he is very curious about Kumogakure’s activities upon his back. Through the rescue of many of his sons and daughters in Turtle Rescue we have fostered goodwill with the island, but now we must make our formal introduction with him and broker an agreement with him. If he allows us to maintain a presence on his back and set up a base of operations, in turn we will care for him, his hatch, and the environment he houses. The problem: we must venture through the thickest parts of Shimagame’s wilds in order to make it to the home of the turtle summons, where Shimagame’s representative and voice, Ningame, resides. After fighting against aggressive plant life and dangerous animals, it is imperative that we forge the beginnings of a good relationship with the giant turtles of the island, so that all might benefit from a future alliance. Completion of this mission will unlock a village summoning contract for Kumogakure: the Dermochelys contract, or contract of leatherback sea turtles. This mission can be completed once. 1. Open SYSTEMS STABLE MISSION RANK: B NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: Requires completion of GENBU, GUARDIAN OF THE NORTH. As part of the deal brokered with Ningame on Genbu’s behalf, Kumogakure’s responsibility is to stabilize the ecology of the island turtle. The food chain has been thrown completely out of whack, with dangerous predator animals dominating those lower on the food chain, and the island’s more potent and dangerous flora is getting out of hand as a result. Threats may include ambulatory, carnivorous plants; flora that dispenses pollen with emotion-heightening effects when threatened; giant predator animals such as apes, lizards, massive birds, and other such creatures. Shinobi should focus on culling either the overpopulated predators or the flora; working on both over time will help to stabilize the ecosystem. This mission is repeatable. 1. Open 2. Open 3. Open BEFRIENDING THE BEAST MISSION RANK: B NPC REQUIREMENT: Optional PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: A common threat that Kumogakure sailors have encountered when approaching Shimagame is that of a giant squid: unnaturally large and incredibly deadly, it has been the source of many shipwrecks over the years, and many people have lost their lives or been brutally injured due to the beast. We have never been able to kill it, only fend it off long enough to sail to safety. It is incredibly dangerous and eager for battle… yet also apparently sentient. If we can prove ourselves worthy in combat against the giant squid and fight it to exhaustion, we may be able to broker a deal with it, allowing safe travel for Kumogakure sailors and enlisting it in the cause to protect Shimagame. Completion of this mission will unlock a village summoning contract for Kumogakure: the Mesonychoteuthis contract, or contract of colossal squids. This mission will also unlock Shimagame as a roleplay board, allowing for free travel, training and social threads for all Kumogakure and allied shinobi. This mission may be completed once. 1. Open a-rank missions. BARRIER DEFENSES MISSION RANK: A NPC REQUIREMENT: Required PARTICIPANTS: 2-3 DESCRIPTION: Requires completion of GENBU, GUARDIAN OF THE NORTH. Part of the deal brokered with Ningame on Genbu’s behalf was that Kumogakure would erect a high-level barrier technique that travels with Genbu, protecting him and his residents from potential seafaring threats. The barrier technique in question is extremely large, complicated, and will require many hands to establish, necessitating a prolonged, potentially highly dangerous mission. Shinobi must escort and defend a group of barrier specialists over the course of several days to sail the waters around Genbu and begin the ritual to establish the barrier. Threats may include giant sea monsters as well as local pirates intrigued by the amount of activity in the nearby waters. After the baseline barrier has been set, the group must travel to the depths of the cavern hidden behind the Falls of Truth: here a connection must be made between Genbu’s latent stores of chakra and the established barrier, allowing the barrier to be self-sustaining for as long as Genbu lives.
