BASIC INFORMATION

NAME: Fukuhara Noma
AGE: 18
GENDER: Female
BIRTHDAY: May 17, 1006
VILLAGE: Kusagakure
CLAN: Araikettei & Fūrinkazan
RANK: Genin
POSITION: Genin Team 2

APPEARANCE

HEIGHT: 5'6 [167.6 cm]
WEIGHT: 125 lbs [56.6 kg]

In just about every way, Noma is average. She is neither too tall nor too short, and she wears her weight comfortably. Though her horsemanship and weapons training have honed her body, she is far from bulky. Her wide, deep-set eyes are the most expressive part of her, and her hair is long and thick (though poorly styled), but the brown and brown makes her about as unique as a bay mare. Her diamond-shaped face might be pretty, if not obscured by her shaggy bangs, and if it wore something other than mild disinterest.

Her attire is equally unimpressive, comprised of long tunics and belts in solid colors. The fabric is sturdy and well cared-for, but not at all expensive or flashy. Stretchy breeches and knee-high boots make riding easier, which is important, as she spends much of her time in the saddle. If the weather requires, Noma is also known to don a high-necked cloak or wide-brimmed hat. She wears her headband across her forehead, and occasionally shoves it back to hold her bangs out of her eyes when concentration is necessary.

Though Noma's mother made countless attempts to "spruce up" her only daughter over the years, Noma never considered her outward appearance all that important. As she's aged, she has recognized the benefits of being easily overlooked - and often underestimated.

PERSONALITY

NINDO: Let no one break you.

From her earliest days, Noma has been described as "agreeable". Her mother considered her an easy baby (far more-so than her troublesome younger brother), and she wore what seemed to be a permanent smile. As the years passed, coos and happy babbling led to laughter, jokes, and an endless stream of questions. Her insatiable curiosity, big heart, and relaxed nature made her a favorite in both of her clans. She doted upon her brother, loved her mother, worshipped her father, and spent the majority of her free-time socializing with the people around her.

The murder of her father changed her in an immeasurable way. Emotions far more potent than anything she had ever experienced - grief, rage, pure terror - threatened to overwhelm her in the days that followed. Rather than sorting through the complex feelings, Noma found it easier to instead shove them aside. She focused her entire existence on two goals - protecting her remaining family, and killing the woman responsible for Akio's death. Her once bright and vibrant life lost all color as its wide scope shrank to a pin-point. Eventually, the bone-deep ache of the loss lessened, and the rage grew more muted. Unfortunately, so too did the laughter, the joy, and the humor.

Noma does not smile often. Her words are usually clipped and matter-of-fact, and she is often difficult to read. Her tough exterior does have a tendency to soften around children and animals, but she is a far-cry from the lively youth she once was. What Noma does not fully realize, however, is the sheer volume of emotion trapped within her weapon. Her Life Blade, awoken in the aftermath of the attack, accepted the storm of sensations being experienced by its wielder. The piece of her spirit held within the spear is a volatile thing, and occasionally, Noma feels traces of this while using the weapon. These waves of sudden and intense emotion catch her off-guard, though so far, they've been short-lived.

HISTORY

WHEN AKIO MET NORIKO (1000 - 1006):
No one was surprised when, at the young age of eighteen, Fukuhara Akio was appointed Chieftain of the Kenta branch. The Fūrinkazan stress the importance of family, tenacity, and freedom, and Akio might have been their poster child. Despite a tragic beginning - losing both parents to illness at the age of nine - Akio grew to be a strong, charismatic, youth. In many ways, the Kenta branch as a whole adopted him, and his fierce loyalty extended to every member of the community. He loved his people, and they loved him. What he did not have, much to the chagrin of the branch's young ladies, was a romantic match. He often joked that his entire heart was kept busy caring for the Kentan people (and their many horses, of course).

That changed shortly after Akio turned twenty-five. Following up on a rumor regarding spears of fantastic quality, Akio found himself in the company of an Araikettei weaponsmith. First, he was won over by Noriko's craftsmanship. Then, her quick wit and dry humor. Her beauty followed sometime shortly after, and within a matter of months, he was courting her. Word of their engagement rocked both clans, who emphasize familial ties. Though the Araikettei merely found the match surprising, the fiercely proud Fūrinkazan immediately questioned their Chieftain's choice. Though the community might have eventually come to accept his new bride, pressure from the Clan Circle prompted Akio to resign in good standing. He remained an important part of Kenta, but he would forever be the man who had chosen love over his branch.

WHEN A BABY WAS BORN (1006 - 1021):
Noriko's one condition was that her children live in the village proper, and Akio found no reason to deny her that. Much of Akio's work involved tracking and breaking wild horses, and his nomadic lifestyle did not lend itself well to raising children. But the time that he spent with little Noma was full of love and laughter. It only grew happier five years later, when a baby boy named Aoto joined the family. Both Noma and Aoto partook in the Araikettei Coming of Age ceremony, receiving their Life Blades and wearing them proudly. Aoto, especially, took quickly to the sword. Noma excelled as well, but her heart remained with her father's people. Noma came alive in the saddle, and felt empowered by the Fūrinkazan philosophy. Stand tall, stay wild - let no one break you. Those were words she could live by.

WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGED (SUMMER OF 1023):
By the age of fifteen, Noma often accompanied her father on his trips. What would be his final job was meant to be a short one - just a handful of days spent visiting a small herd of horses. Only half a dozen men and women from Kenta would be accompanying them, and any sort of threat was seemingly non-existent. Akio and Noma tag-teamed Aoto, finally convincing him to come along, though he didn't share their love for horses. It would be fun, they promised him, and it was. Noma loved the sights, the horses, and her father's companions. And on the second night, when they shared their fire with a weary traveler, Noma admired their generous spirit.

No one had even heard of Owari Nenshou, the Burning Death, so the woman's attack came completely out of the blue. In a spectacular display of light and heat, the stranger took from Noma what she loved most - her horse, her comfortable way of life, and her father.

The memories are somehow both jumbled and painfully clear in Noma's mind. She remembers her father's face, one half already disfigured from the flames, as he shoved her clear. The odd look of acceptance he wore as he took up his spear, and turned his back to her. As he spent his final moments protecting her. It had taken all of the strength she possessed to drag her shell-shocked brother into the saddle of her father's waiting horse, swing up behind them, and ride for the nearest settlement. Whether the Burning Death had truly laughed in delight as she killed Akio, or if Noma's subconscious had simply added that detail, she could not be certain.

WHEN NOMA MADE HER CHOICE (1021 - 1024):
The days that followed were a blur. Even when her Life Blade took its final form, a moment Noma had longed for her entire life, she hardly noticed; she was too busy watching her mother grieve over her father's body. Perhaps it was somewhat twisted for the universe to shape her spirit weapon after her Akio's spear, but she found some comfort in it as time passed. In fact, the more time that she spent with her Life Blade, the more distant the debilitating emotions became. Finally, she could breathe again - and think again. With a clear head and a hardened heart, Noma took stock of her life. Noriko blamed the Fūrinkazan for her loss, and when Noma refused to give up the lifestyle, a rift opened between mother and daughter. They speak little now, and see each other even less frequently. Noma still makes time to visit her brother though, and Aoto seems to harbor no ill-will toward her, but the siblings are naturally drifting apart as they take different paths in life.

Noma's path took her to the Academy, where she trained for three years. Her existing weapon skills helped move her along, but she had much to learn when it came to history, politics, strategy, and ninjutsu. The ninjutsu, much to Noma's dismay, did not come as easily as she'd hoped. Still, she kept her head down, studied hard, and worked tirelessly to reach the rank of Genin. She did not let her ninjutsu hang-ups, or the fact that she was far older than the majority of the students, keep her from her goal. Unfortunately, that tunnel vision did not allow Noma any real time for friends or relationships during her schooling.

Her only real companion is Kyo, the slice of her spirit trapped within her Life Blade. It has been siphoning extreme emotions from her for years, and the result is an opinionated, explosive, border-line bipolar voice in Noma's head. Kyo guides her blade during combat, but it also enjoys constantly weighing-in on her life. Between Kyo and her father's stallion, Kaze, Noma has all the company she needs. Granted, Kaze isn't entirely comfortable around Kyo, but that's perhaps a problem for another time.

FIGHTING STYLE

Noma's fighting style is a perfect marriage between her two clan upbringings. Araikettei has taught her discipline, honor, and precision, while Fūrinkazan is responsible for her brute strength and her out-of-the-box thinking. She hits hard, and she hits fast, often in a way that her opponent isn't expecting. She leans heavily on her mounted combat and her weaponry. For now, her ninjutsu typically supports her bukijutsu. Her weakness lies in adaptability - when the fight starts to get away from her, and the chaos overwhelms, Noma panics. She may not run away, but her attacks become erratic (if she manages an attack at all). This may be rooted in the night her father died. Her recent skittishness around fire certainly suggests as much.
