There were no paths to guide the way along uneven ground jutting with roots and boulders. No signs of the hand of mankind, save for a man struggling through the wilderness on his own. His breath stank of booze, his gait crooked and confused. Shirtless, with dozens of glazed over eyes wearily searching the sticks and stones for something, anything that might guide his way back to civilization’s comforts.

He stopped at a moss covered tree many years his elder and watched a colony of ants crawling up and down its flesh, stealing its blood one drop at a time. The last stupors of drunkenness were fading from him, replaced with a pulsing headache. Chitoku tried to recall how he’d gotten here, but everything was fuzzy.

There was a festival near the edge of the woods. He remembered that much, and he could taste the toxins in his body when a belch escaped his throat. His entire mouth tasted like vomit, but he couldn’t remember throwing up.

The idea dawned on him to try to backtrack and look for his bile on the forest floor. Perhaps it could lead him closer to safety.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Continuing his directionless trek through the woods, following what he could of broken grass and twigs, Chitoku finally did catch sight of a pile of vomit smeared on the ground at the edge of a shrub with red berries growing from it. Mildly poisonous berries he could tell, which might explain the vomit. Still, the pounding in his head was telling him that it was more of a hangover than anything else.

Still, he thought it would be best to clear his body of any toxins. He placed his hands over his stomach and began channeling chakra into his palms. He felt the body fluids inside of him rising up, and then he bent over and gagged. Several more berries and some random bits of rice came up from the use of the technique. Although it made his throat burn, he got an immediate relief from the worst of his hangover, although he still felt drowsy.

Chitoku still hadn’t found much of anything to go on to get himself back home. Frustrated, he looked up a large elm tree with a lot of thick branches. He decided that he’d try climbing up and getting a look at the position to get his bearings.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]The trunk of the elm tree split three quarters of their way up, forming two distinct paths upwards with branches that reached up towards the sun in a snaking pattern. Its flesh felt dry and rigid on Chitoku’s hands as he began hoisting himself up. Perhaps a jutsu would have made it easier to get up, but he didn’t like to make a habit of using chakra frivolously when he was lost. Who knew when he’d make his way back?

As he reached the place where the tree diverged into two, he placed his foot and hoisted himself up and took a break for a moment. The thick branches of green leaves obscured his vision. Of the two possible paths to ascend he took the thicker of the two, and climbing from here was somewhat easier as he found branches to use as handholds so that he didn’t have to worm up the base of the tree anymore.

Nearing the top, a tiny head popped out of a hole in the wood. A bird with a brown coat, white face and underbelly, and a black pattern over its eyes.

Chitoku lost his grip out of surprise and slid down the side of the tree, catching himself.

"Damn bird!” he groaned.
"Sorry!” a voice called back.

"I must be hallucinating,” he muttered to himself as he began climbing back up.
"Uh, hello! Could you please not climb there, it's making a terrible ruckus in here.”

Looking up again, he was sure it came from the mouth of the sparrow, which had now flown out of the little hole and landed on a tree branch near his head but just out of his reach.

"Huh? You’re really talking to me?” he asked the bird.
"Well, yea. I don’t see anyone else up here. I'm a bit relieved though, thought you might be a cat or this squirrel who has been driving me nuts.”

He had encountered a speaking animal before on the road with another shinobi, somewhat recently. She was able to call it from seemingly out of nowhere to her aid.

"Sorry, I am not used to speaking with animals. This is your home then?” Chitoku said.
"That’s right.”
"Okay, well I guess that I will swing over to the other side then. Unless you can help me?”

Chitoku was too tired to be suspicious of the little bird, and thought that it looked innocent enough. If they did end up crossing them then he was sure he could handle it.

"Oh sure,” the sparrow said. "I actually know the way out, I can show you the way.”

The Dodomeki sighed with relief and nodded. He began slowly crawling down the trunks of the tree. The bird buzzed around him left and right, fluttering its wings and circling all the way down. Little chirps escaped its mouth, more percussion than song, but oddly rhythmic.

"Are you a spider?” the bird asked.
"No, why do you ask?” Chitoku replied.
"You have a lot of eyes, so I thought maybe you were.”
"No, those are just… how I am, but I am human.”
"Okay then.”

Back on the forest floor, Chitoku brushed off his clothing. He looked at the sparrow expectantly.

"What?” it asked.
"You were going to show me the way out of here…” Chitoku said.
"Oh, that’s right. Let’s go then, follow me!”

"Chitoku,” he replied. He didn’t want to give the creature his full name, often mistaken for a yokai himself the Dodomeki had heard his fair share of tales. "I am from Na no Kuni.”
"Na?Na na na? I don’t know what human places are. I am from that tree over there. What do you reside in?”
Chitoku blinked. "Well, I don’t really have a place. I move from place to place.”
"Oh, like a sheep or something.”
"Sure.”

The bird flew ahead of him slightly, so he continued forward. The brush nearby stirred as a squirrel rushed by and scurried up a tree.

"There they are, bastard! You better stay away from my house!” Shitah-kiri yelled.

Chitoku couldn’t help but laugh into his palm.

"What? What’s so funny?”
"Nothing. I could take care of them for you, if you want,” he said, drawing a shuriken.
"Oh no, no don’t do that,” the bird pleaded. "Life is a precious gift. Even if the squirrel is a thief, I wouldn’t want to see harm done to him.”
"Okay then. Is the way very far?” Chitoku said as he tucked the shuriken away.
