Lord Masanobu of Vegetable Country's carraige was raided on his way home from a festival in Bird Country. His daughter was taken hostage along with the festivals prized hog, Sukoshi-Kun. He has reluctantly agreed to let us keep the pig if we can get his daughter back unharmed. The bandits are held up in the ruins of Nakano in Vegetable Country, a village burnt down years ago. The bandits have turned an abandoned mill that was mostly intact into their base of operations.

Lord Masanobu was a prat and Ayane could care less about retrieving his daughter. He could afford to pay the ransom and nobody needed to die. He didn’t see it that way though. He cared more about his reputation than his daughter in Ayane’s opinion. Only when he dropped the little detail about the prized hog, Sukoshi-Kun, having been taken as well did Ayane really begin listening. He dropped it in casually at the end as if it were an afterthought, as if it were simply adding insult to injury. Ayane had tried to purchase the hog at the festival auction but she’d been outbid by her sometimes-employer. He didn’t seem to remember her though. She was beneath his level of care. That was fine though; all Ayane cared about was rescuing Sukoshi-Kun from ending up on someone’s breakfast plate. A magnificent creature like that should be free to prance across fields of wildflowers and bathe in mud puddles. She didn’t have to convince Chitoku to take the mission. He knew the pig had been on her mind.

Now the pair of wanin found themselves on the outskirts of Nakano. It was a desolate place with ruined structures burned long ago in a tragedy remembered only by the two survivors. Ayane took a deep breath and reached out to hold Chotoku’s hand, "Welcome home.”

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Chitoku’s eyes bathed in the site of the ruins, each charred shack held a memory. Ayane’s hand kept him tethered from floating into the despair that hung over his stomach as the wind blew against the brush of wildflowers that hid skeletal remains and rusted sickles used in a last ditch defense.

"What’s left of it anyway.”

The pair stuck to the overgrown grasses, watching the area for signs of activity. The windmill looming over the hill with the cloth of its blades moth eaten and as still as the graveyard of a town.

It would have been poetic if the bandits who took the town were the ones held up in it, but those fools had been from the forests of Moku no Kuni. They had already had their revenge deep in the woods far from the town. The ones holding up here were just scavengers taking advantage of the ruins close enough to menace the roads.

Coming back here was something that his subconscious had avoided. It was a cruel twist of fate that their objective was here, and although he wanted to turn back they needed the money and Ayane really wanted that pig.

From the brush he pointed to a pair of people coming out of the distant windmill.

Chōmoku
From a young age Chitoku was implanted with preserved eyes of deceased clansmen all over his body. Coverage includes both his arms (5 on each arm), torso (9 eyes), and back (7 eyes) effectively granting him a 360 degree field of vision when his chest is uncovered and a plethora of eyes to use as visual triggers for certain genjutsu. When all but his arms are covered there are small pockets of the field which only fall into his peripheral vision.

This gift comes at a price, as he is more susceptible to seeing visual triggers himself or having the soft tissues of the eye damaged. In case of being blinded, covered eyes can be uncovered to provide sight as well, although the more eyes that are blinded or damaged the less coverage he has with line of sight.

Versed in traditional medicine including surgery, Chitoku can provide conventional first aid treatments to the wounded and practice medicine in general. Knowledge of the human body also grant him insights on vulnerable parts of anatomy and a deeper understanding of pain as well.

Exceptional Chakra Control
Compared to most shinobi of his grade, Chitoku's chakra control is exceptional. He is able to conserve a good deal of energy with his jutsu usage which allows him in turn to use more jutsu over time. His control is precise enough to channel complicated illusions and medical chakra as well.

Now that they stepped through the streets it occured to Ayane how different it all was than what she’d expected. She knew it would be but it was not the different that she’d expected. The last memories were the ones that stuck; smoke and flames, movement and screams, panic and dread. Those were the memories that had fueled the rage she’d held onto for so long. This place was quiet, peaceful even, and the sun was shining brightly. The sounds of birds chirping and the scent of fresh flowers growing up over the broken and blackened frames of burned buildings. Time had passed and nature was beginning to reclaim this place, burying their dead without aid.

As the movement was pointed out to her, Ayane ducked down behind a jagged wall and pulled Chitoku with her. She peeked one eye around the side of the wall and watched the two people coming out of the windmill. Something about the woman on the left caught her attention and made the little hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She didn’t immediately recognize either of the people but something about the woman’s posture and gait struck her as familiar. She squinted hard focusing on the face until finally she stifled a gasp and ducked back behind the wall.

She whispered excitedly to Chitoku, "Do you know who that is? Hana, the butcher’s daughter. She lived right next door. She must have survived! … But what is she doing here with these people?”

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Chitoku watched and squinted when Ayane called out one of the people coming out was someone from the town. At first a sense of relief washed over him. They weren’t the only survivors after all. Some must have hidden in the fields until things were over. Then a dark thought washed over him. There were no signs of crops being tended here. How were they feeding themselves these days?

"I’m not sure. We should keep watching them for now,” he said.

Hana and the other figure kept walking and then sat on a boulder near the mil. She pulled a farming sickle from her side and started to sharpen it with a stone. Her face was weathered, and she was dressed in animal furs. Hanging from her hip was a sling accompanied by a large bag of stones.

The other figure removed a hood. They were a teenager with a familiar look about them, flax hair like Hana’s and bright blue eyes. He remembered that Hana had a younger brother named Yuto, who was about eight years old when the town was burned. He was gaunt but had an athletic tone and a bow slung over his back.

While they were watching them, Yuto drew an arrow from his quiver and a makeshift wooden arrow zipped towards Chitoku and Ayane hiding in the grass. It landed near their feet.

It was clear they had been spotted, and the youth began drawing another arrow into his quiver.

"Wait! Hana it’s Ayane.” She popped up and raised her hands up in the universal sign of surrender. "Hanyuu Ayane. We were friends when we were younger. My parent’s shop was just over there next to your family’s butchery.” She smiled weakly as both hope and anxiousness gripped her heart. It wasn’t exactly true that they were friends. They did play together sometimes but it was always Ayane and her twin sister Ema. Whenever they played with someone else that person ended up feeling like a third wheel.

How Hana felt about that left Ayane feeling uncertain how she might react to seeing her now. She hoped they could resolve this altercation peacefully but she was silently preparing her heart for the possibility that she might have to defend herself and Chitoku. She was still trying to work out what these survivors were doing here. Nothing had been rebuilt. There wasn’t much to scavenge. And apparently, this area was home to some dangerous folks.

Hana’s brother, Ayane didn’t remember his name, lowered his bow but kept the arrow notched. The wannin took that as a good sign and took a tentative step towards them. She glanced around. "Is it safe to be out here in the open? We haven’t been home in years but we heard rumors that the area wasn’t safe for travelers…”

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Chitoku joined Ayane in standing, although he wasn’t sure if it was the wisest move. The woman looked to her brother, and then back to the pair. She held her sickle in her hand tightly as she looked them over.

"It's not. What are you doing here?” she said.
Chitoku broke his silence and responded. "We could ask you the same thing, but if you have to know… we came to pay our respects.”
"Bold of you, considering it's you and your mom’s fault…”

Chitoku tensed up as guilt held deep in his mind rolled to the forefront of his thoughts. The Dodomeki were healers, yes, but they were also supposed to be the guardians of the village. If his mother and he had been quicker to respond maybe they could have saved everyone from the bandits. It felt heavier now that he knew some of them had lived and suffered because of their failure.

"I’m sorry,” he muttered, looking down at the ground.
"Save it!” she said, ripping the bow from her brother’s hand and knocking it. "Go let Hanzo know!” she said to Yuto, who began running for the windmill.

Hanzo was the son of the town’s leader. A few years older than Chitoku and was considered the most eligible bachelor in Nakano. Chitoku assumed that he was running this operation.

"I will submit to his judgment,” he said, falling to his knees with his hands up.

Maybe these were the people that Ayane should have been with this whole time. He had always been an outsider.

Ayane didn’t like the way Hana was talking to her friend. They’d all faced loss on that day and in her opinion those at fault had already been punished. Whatever connection she had with these people was nothing compared to the loyalty she felt towards Chitoku. She was determined not to allow these people to pass any sort of judgment upon him despite his submission. She stepped in front of the other wannin protectively.

"You stand with this traitor?” Hana growled.
Ayane glanced over her shoulder. ”He’s kneeling actually.”
Hana scoffed, "You always did think you were better than us, didn’t you?”
”It’s a simple mind that blames others for their own weakness.”
”What did you say?” Hana adjusted her grip on her weapon threateningly.
”I wouldn’t underestimate us if I were you.” Ayane didn’t have any obvious weapons visible but that didn’t mean she wasn’t ready for a fight.

The tension was broken when a small group of people arrived led by Yuto and a slightly older young man. Hanzo was tall and muscular with short dark hair.

"Stand down Hana. I’ll take it from here.” Hanzo’s order was not questioned but Ayane could see on her face that Hana was not happy. "Now, what are you two doing back here after all this time?”

Hanzo carried an ax and the other figures with him carried weapons as well. One was a crusty older man with graying hair wielding a butcher’s blade. The other had a feminine frame and wore a makeshift mask and had burn marks running down their hands and carried a pitchfork. Hanzo himself had burns on his left hand.

"We came to visit it as one would visit a grave,” Chitoku said. "We thought we were the only survivors.”

Putting a hand on Ayane’s shoulder and stepping in front of her, he spoke again. "Ayane hasn’t done you any wrong, but I know that it's my fault that the town was destroyed. I’ll submit to your judgment.”

The man thought for a moment, looking at Hana and the others. Then back to them. When he spoke he spoke to Ayane directly. "We’ll be having his head then. We’ve got a hog we are going to butcher, and a lot of money coming soon so that we can rebuild. You do us the honors of putting him down, and you can be one of us. Otherwise, you’re against us.”

"Oh. So that’s how it is.” The whole situation suddenly made a lot more sense now. If the survivors had the hog that meant they were the bandits they’d been told about. She understood that in desperate circumstances people would do whatever it takes to survive but it still felt like a betrayal for them to have allowed themselves to become the very thing that had destroyed them. She didn’t care how desperate they were. It occured to Ayane that the girl must be around here as well. It would have been better to keep them talking and see if they would reveal her location before kicking off a fight. However, this sudden ultimatum really backed her into a corner.

"I guess I have no choice.” She lied as she pulled out a small dagger and turned to face Chitoku. Ayane looked down at him coldly. She knew he didn’t want to defend himself against these people but he couldn’t stop her from protecting him. "I’m really sorry it’s come to this.”

She ran the dagger along her palm so that only her companion would see. They’d been together long enough that Chitoku would know what that meant and he might have a few seconds to prepare himself for battle. She summoned two puppets, Imouto-san and Kyōdai, that stood defensively in the space between the wannin and the bandits.

But she made her choice, and although he could try to stop her with a genjutsu, he couldn’t make her comply with their orders and they would come for her anyway. Doubly so once the puppets emerged.

When Hanzo and company saw what was going on, they sprang into action. Yuto had gotten his bow back and knocked an arrow, aiming in and preparing to fire at Chitoku. Hana pulled a sling from her side and started to spin it around. Hanzo ran forward with his ax and began pressing to get into melee range, although the puppets stood in the way. He was joined by the burned woman and her pitchfork.

Chitoku stood up and gathered himself. He wouldn’t let Ayane fight alone, even if he was willing to forfeit his own as penance. From his back, he unrolled a scroll of his own and broke its seal. The body of a towering man with a messy crew cut spilled from the paper. Musclebound, covered in stitches, smelling of embalming fluid. The Dodomeki made two hand seals, and the corpse stood.

"That’s-” the masked woman said in hesitation.
"The leader of the bandits,” Chitoku said. "Killed and collected as a trophy.”

He hoped maybe it would be enough to deter them or make them reconsider. That the fiend who burned the village was gone. At the very least it might prove a useful psychological weapon.

"It changes nothing!” Hanzo said as he continued his charge.

Yuto's arrow flew towards Chitoku, but the corpse blocked it.

Ayane was relieved when Chitoku sprung into action. She would have been very outnumbered without his help but she’d been prepared to die defending her friend. She wouldn’t run or hide like she’d done so many years ago. There was a lot of new information coming at them suddenly and it was obvious to Ayane that his first reaction was an emotional one. Of course he would want to atone for what he perceived as his failure to defend the village. However, she was certain that in time he would forgive her for going against his wishes. He just needed time to see the complexities of the situation.

Despite Hanzo’s assertion that the bandit leader’s corpse made no difference, Yuto seemed shaken when it blocked his arrow. He was younger than the others and likely far less experienced. The notion that his own corpse might be the next reanimated to fight for his enemy was terrifying and he hesitated.

Ayane’s finger twitched and Kyodai was shifted a little to the left just in time to block Hana’s stone from hitting her. It bounced harmlessly off the teddy bear’s the fluffy exterior. With a flick of her fingers the two puppets rushed forward. Kyodai ran at Hana and tried to grapple her. She pulled at her sickle and hacked at the puppet’s arm. The cloth on the outside was slashed and some of the white stuffing and sawdust poked through the wound but his form held together.

Imouta-san’s wrist bent back revealing a compartment inside the arm from which a poisoned dagger was launched at Hanzo.

For a time she seemed to have the corpse held at bay, but it took all of her strength to keep it pinned. They were left locked in a struggle with one another.

Hanzo was taken off-guard by the sudden launch of the poisoned dagger that grazed by his cheek. Chitoku caught sight of the dripping substance with one of his eyes. Knowing that it would take at least three cuts, he quickly popped open a dose and threw a poison coated shuriken at him.

A savvy fighter, Hanzo noticed when Chitoku was preparing the shuriken and deflected it out of the way. He then tried to kick the puppet out of the way so that he could try to go around it.

Chitoku was certain Ayane’s puppets could keep the melee combatants at bay. His primary concern was the archer in the back getting a stray shot in. When Yuto knocked another arrow and aimed in on him, he laced his eyes with chakra. Yuto started freezing up, and seemingly lost agency of his movement.

Ayane took advantage of the momentary distraction as Hannah glanced over and noticed her brother had suddenly become rather still. He was not still in the traditional way of having fallen unconscious but standing awake with eyes open but seemingly unresponsive to the fray around him. The doors on Kyōdai’s chest cavity swung open like the pincers of a crab and his arms reached out and embraced Hana, pulling her in close. She was just quick enough to brace herself against the top and bottom of the tiny prison. She struggled against the mounting pressure still grasping her sickle in one hand.

Meanwhile, Hanzo, having only seen the puppet’s ranged capabilities, tried to push past it by parrying the projectile arm up with his forearm. Another poison coated dagger flipped up into the puppets grasp and it sliced down inflicting a second bleeding slash on the new leader of the survivors. He cursed loudly. Suddenly finding himself in melee combat, he swung his ax at the back of the puppet's knee. Ayane took a few stumbling steps back. She did not like how close he was getting.

The burned woman, Ayane sort of remembered her face from somewhere but she wasn’t sure she ever knew her name, pulled back on the pitch fork and stabbed again at the corpse. This time he was impaled closer to the neck. The woman twisted the fork up in an attempt to draw blood but the corpse showed no fear or pain.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]With Yuto mesmerized, Chitoku had split his focus between the corpse and the genjutsu, putting a heavier drain on his chakra. It looked like Ayane was almost through with Hana, and Hanzo was a more immediate threat. He released the chakra of the dead soul technique, though special material inside of it would allow it to continue its last orders for a short time.

Hanzo was the biggest problem. With the flick of a wrist the mercenary sent another poison coated shuriken towards him while he fought against the puppet. It landed, dosing him for a third time. His body started to convulse. He collapsed onto the ground with eyes fluttering. Paralyzed.

"She’ll be free soon,” Chitoku said, pointing to the burned woman in the mask with the pitchfork embedded into the reanimated corpse that was beginning to lose strength. "Let’s try not to kill anyone if we can avoid it.”

It was up to Ayane to finish off Hana and at least block the masked figure from rushing their position. Chitoku was best focusing on holding his technique against Yuto so that they wouldn’t have to deal with his arrows while they finished cleaning up the rest of their former townsfolk.

"Got it!” Ayane called out to Chitoku. She’d seen the woman with the pitchfork and was prepared for whenever she gave up on fighting a corpse. She had lost all concern about keeping the survivors alive the moment they threatened her friend’s life. However, now that the tide of the fight had shifted in their favor she supposed they could try to finish it without loss of life. The wanin could see that Yuto was still incapacitated. And she grimaced as Hanzo began to shiver from the poison. He was much less attractive as he hit the ground. After a moment, Hana’s strength gave out and she dropped the scythe as Kyodai shoved her into his torso. The doors slammed shut around her. Angry screams and thrashing could be heard from the inside but it hardly mattered; she was no longer a concern for the moment.

The woman with the pitchfork was too frenzied to notice all this happening around her and seemed to finally grow tired of struggling against a meat shield. She kept the pitchfork in and tried to slide around him to get closer to Ayane and Chitoku. The bladed puppet stepped up to block her path leaving her sandwiched between two constructs. "Look around you. It’s over.”
