It had only been a day or so after they had left the spear sect when Yakitsukeru had gone back to mostly silent travel. Her social battery almost nonexistent compared to Mairasu's comparably larger one. This often lead the two to companionable silence, but it had often given Yakitsukeru a pause, as she had always assumed if he had an issue with her lack of speech she would hear Mairasu ask to pause so he could summon Sune, or one of the other more friendly snake sage summons. It was something that she just assumed he didn't care to waste the chakra on, after all Yakitsukeru only really had Furu as a companion, despite that damn snake being an absolute nightmare to her if she was even slightly late on her 'payments'. The snake being obsessed with having their scales painted to not be barren.

Still, the lack of attempts. It lead her to a single conclusion, one that Mairasu had if her memory was serving her right said only once. He wasn't actually signed to the contract, but that didn't sound right. He had been an apprentice for years longer then her, there was no way he hadn't right? She refused to let it sit, her need for their competition to be kept fair... she had to ask, "Mairasssu. You are sssigned to the contract right?"

TAKE ME TO VALHALLA WHERE MY BROTHERS WAIT FOR ME

The days following their meeting with the spear lady --as Mairusu now called her-- were filled with a lot of silent contemplation. He and Yaki had been able to tap into sage mode for at least a couple minutes without interruption and the power that came with it was amazing, even still they hadn't won their sparring match against the weapon wielding woman and it took a combined effort to land a single blow; there was much the young apprentices still had to learn but they were on the right track. Speaking aloud about their experiences would have been great, too, but Yaki had sunk back into her less than talkative demeanor since leaving the sect which left very few options other than silent introspection.

Then, a question, one that the boy had wondered about himself for quite some time and for a while thought may never happen and as of current still hadn't happened. "Contract? Like, to summon the snakes? Nope, never signed it. The main sage keeps switching around so much, or a new one gets chosen --however it happens-- that one hasn't stuck around long enough for me to get that far." He'd reply with a very distinct hint of annoyance in his tone, not aimed at Yaki of course, but the situation as a whole. Even though he had been an apprentice for a considerable amount of time longer than the pale girl they were essentially on an even plane when it came to knowledge and experience and it could be squarely attributed to the boy not having a consistent teacher for years; it was the sole reason he had dedicated so much time to getting better at meditation as it was the one thing he could do that didn't require a sensei or come with the threat of turning into a statue.

Well that wouldn't stand. Not at all. Rolling up her sleeve to where she kept the contract seal on her inner arm, Yaki wordlessly performed a few handseals and nicked her finger sliding the blood down her arm in an instant. The seal, unbound, would never summon one of the snakes that mattered. However, it would let her summon a very specific e-rank snake and the summon scroll of the contract.

A moment after pressing her hand to the ground Yakitsukeru would watch as a puff of smoke would summon a long thin scroll with an outer shade of jade and a long thin green snake from nothing. Giving an even stare to the bastard that guarded the scroll and then Mairasu she would snatch and then toss the scroll to her sage apprentice.

"None of your crap today Yakuni. Thisss isss an official apprentice approved by Manda-Sssama. Uncoil and allow him to sssign," Yakitsukeru would state before the sour snake could even so much as try and respond to them - not that he would. Despite being perfectly capable of speech Yakuni vehemently refused to use words on humans given his disdain. That didn't mean he wouldn't listen all the same, Manda out ranked him, and if he had anything to go on - Yaki would likely summon him again to give him mice. Though perhaps the young man had a better plan?

There was no visible confusion, no further up questions or wonder how a sage apprentice had gone so long without signing the contract (at least Yaki hadn't shown it), but instead a series of quick movements that turned their duo into a trio and before he knew it there was a small snake wrapped around an ornate scroll laying before them. The genin wondered how --and when-- Yaki had signed the contract and for how long had she had the ability to do so? Her initial question had perhaps been the sole reason that this occurrence hadn't happened yet as she may have been under the impression that Mairusu could summon the snakes himself, though if that had been the case she would have seen him summon them a whole bunch by now.

But that didn't matter now as it looked like they were about to rectify that mistake right here and now as he caught the tossed scroll and began to unfurl it before stopping. "Umm, you sure this ok? I know you just said Manda was cool with it but does one of the big guys need to be here or anything? No offense.." The boy offered a small wave to the unspeaking snake. Landing himself in hot water with the snakes was the absolute last thing Mairusu wanted to do especially if it was concerning something that could be taken care of once they reached Mount Python, buuuuut if he could get a head start on things --or make up for lost time depending on how one looked at it-- then maybe it was worth the risk.

He was being ridiculous about this now, she couldn't see this as anything except ridiculous. Absolutely unbelievable that Mairasu who had been an apprentice this long and had actively never gotten to even sign the contract was now worried about doing that exact thing. Giving him a flat stare Yaki's silence spoke of the multitudes in which she found this stupid, after all it was rare Mairasu sent her into a stupor she found hard to respond from. Shrugging Yaki gave Mairasu the biggest 'Not my Problem' look before leaning back into one of the trees to the side of the road while she waited on the young man to complete the act of signing.

"Thisss isss all on you now, Mairasssu-kun. You do what you think isss appropriate, but you either sssign that now or get to wait to asssk Manda-Sssama, likely in perssson, when we go to the sssummit here in a few daysss. Who would you prefer to get permission from? Yakuni, or Manda-Sssama" The girl asked the question like the answer was obvious. The snake that had been on the scroll coiling up the boy's arm before setting to stare dead on into his face. Judging his reaction, his resolve, and his decision.

It wasn't the answer he wanted, but Yaki's response did help put things in perspective for the young shinobi as the prospect of having to ask something of Manda was downright terrifying and probably would have come with another one of the snake's challenges; these serpents sure did love their challenges for some reason. Besides, what good was taking all this time to get in tune with nature and train under the serpents if he couldn't call upon them when needed? Seemed like hustling backwards to him, and Mairusu was confident taht the snakes would see it the same way if he ever had to explain himself.

The feeling of something crawling up his arm prompted the look over and sure enough the snake that had been coiled around the contract was now staring him in the face, no doubt wanting the best seat in the house to see what decision the apprentice would make. The genin stopped short of asking the serpent for advice as it hadn't said a word this entire time and didn't look particularly pleased to be here, but considering it was the protector of the contract and would no doubt report to the other snakes about any changes to it that wasn't the worst idea in the world.

"Fine fine, but if I get yelled at because of this we're gonna have words." They wouldn't. Yaki was terrifying. Looking back at the scroll he could see the names of various other signers, some familiar and others a complete mystery, and it was time to add his name to the long list of those who could call upon the snakes. Biting his thumb just hard enough to draw blood the boy would sign his name on an open space before holding up the scroll and taking a look at his handiwork, all that simulated practice with the summoning technique had prepared him for this moment even if it was a little backwards.

"Alright, I guess that's that." He didn't feel any different, not that the boy knew if he was supposed to or not, but there was no strange sensation washing over him or anything of the sort, no rush of power now that he had signed the contract yet there was a feeling of confidence coursing through him with an added boon to his arsenal.

He had a single complaint, but it was the kind of complaint she could roll her eyes and live with hearing. And after all was said and done he was officially a part of the contract. Something that she figured she was about to be supremely agitated with, as it assured that they were not travelling in silence near ever again. Though maybe he would summon one of the snakes with a nastier personality towards the contract holders? There were a few of those, it was just a matter of luck until he learned the Contract Seal and made a specific contract to one of the summons of the contract.

"Wow Yakitsssukeru, thank you for helping me sssolve the problem of all of our sssagesss being incompetent asssholesss who didn't let me sssign the contract prior! I really needed that!" Yakitsukeru would hiss mockingly out into the air of the road. Not bothering to look over at him as she began to turn away and further back down the road, their little pit stop having ended already. She felt they had accomplished what was needed for the moment, and frankly if it wasn't clear she was joking with him at this point that was on Mairasu. They had places to go and a time frame to keep.
