SPLASH

A bucket of water dropped to the ground and rolled slightly to the side. Instantly, laughter echoed through the training area and livened up the otherwise serene environment. It was past the hours of the academy and on a Friday so only the very studious stayed behind to practice. Naoko was one of those students and would have been working on rehearsing what she had learn throughout the week but was, instead standing surrounded by her schoolmates and also damp from the water spilled on her.

Water dripped from her bangs and rolled down her face. The top half of her body was drenched and she could feel the cold water follow gravity and drain down the rest of her body. The evening was close and the air temperature had dropped already. A cold breeze passed right through her and she clenched her hands around her torso with her head down.

”Oh? Looks like she’s just as pale. It’s not makeup after all… I was so sure, too” a disappointed groan came from one of the kids surrounding her. Most of them were a little shorter than Naoko but it didn’t seem to matter. They were laughing and seemed quite proud by their prank.

”Neji, careful, don’t make eye contact. You know what happens when you make eye contact for more than three seconds. Mei-chan got sick for two weeks… The girl who sat in Yūrei’s seat by accident broke her leg the next day, too.” another kid warned and looked generally concerned as the third leaned in to poke Naoko with the end of a long stick he carried.

”That’s not true. Nothing bad will happen if you look at me. I actually don’t have any powe-” Naoko mumbled under her breath while still looking down but was then shoved down to the ground by the same boy who dumped water on her.

”Stop casting spells, you damn ghost!” he snapped at her and kicked some dirt over and Naoko shrank in her knocked over form even more. She stayed on the ground and the group of two boys and a girl left. ”Why do teachers bother with her anyway? She’s useless, unsightly and unholy… I heard she got tutored by the Mizukage? Must be a lie, right?” the kids discussed as they left but soon their words faded into the surrounding quiet again.

Naoko pulled her knees into her chest and sat there taking in what had happened. Her chest felt heavy and taking a breath almost stung so bad she wanted to cry. With no sound, big tears started welling down her cheeks and joining the other drops of water running down her face. The salty drops were mostly hidden by her bangs and she hugged her knees in front of her and stared at the bokken on the ground in front of her.

”Did I do something wrong?” she mumbled before burying her head in her knees.

At the end of the world

The Mizukage had visited the academy, gone out for a quick lunch, and was returning back to his office for the rest of the day when a strange group of teenage girls had shown up in his path. Regardless of how the young man had moved, left, right or center they seemed to move as a strange mass, kicking up dust and dirt. Their eyes full of strange mirth, staring at the Mizukage as if they had taken love potions. Toru was non the wiser to their love for him, but he was not so dull as to not notice the look in their eyes - even if he could not fully understand or read it.

"Can I help you ladies?"

It was enough to set them off. They screamed and squealed and suddenly they gave chase. Toru was not necessarily accustomed to being mobbed in this manner, and with Daichi not being around at the moment he was not certain to what he should do other than quite literally disappear.

Using a mixture of shinobi trickery and his speed Toru managed to outwit the hoard of girls and have them running by the building he had ducked into.

More specifically, he was back at the academy and now he knew he would have to lie low for a little while until he could comfortably return to his office.

A sigh left him, unsure of what to do.

Pop into a few classrooms, perhaps? No, class was over for the day.

So the young man wandered down into the renovated training yard at the bottom floor where some overachievers were known to hang out.

A gaggle of students were leaving just as the boy king arrived, and had it not been for his reflex he might have stepped on Naoko who was laid out on the ground, curled up, wet and with a bucket nearby.

She appeared to be crying and Toru could not help but stare and blink one too many times, his blinks long and slow as if he were processing the situation.

"I hope that is sweat from hard work and not tears." He murmured, finally.

Naoko didn’t even move when Toru almost ran into her. She sat there like a doll. Her pale skin looked like porcelain and the only movement was a barely perceptible rise and fall in her chest to breathe. Tears were streaming down continuously and it seemed she was staring at a point beyond reality. There was an emptiness in her eyes that felt incredibly cold.

She didn’t answer right away. The girl took a moment and looked quite broken. ”Toru-sama,” she started quietly ”I am really sorry that I look this way. If I was less pale and less scary, the the others wouldn’t be afraid of me and you’d have it easier to teach me.” Naoko lifted her hands and stared at her skin colour.

”This cursed body… just like aunty said, I’m cursed. That’s why people try to wash my paleness off…” she glanced back at the bucket and bit her lip in frustration. Her vision was blurry as more tears built up. She could only see approximate shapes of her white hands against the black of her skirt and her hands would clasp together with fingers digging in each other to draw blood which ran black - even her blood was unsightly. ”I promise that I don’t actually curse people. No one will get sick if they look me in the eye for three seconds.” her words became shaky and she started sobbing as she talked but also tried to swallow the sobs so her words came out in small portions. ”I can’t. Control spirits. I don’t mean to. Make others hurt. By being with me.” she took a moment to get a few sobs out and catch her breath and wanted to look up but was afraid that she might accidentally curse Toru if she did. What if the rumours were true?

”I promise I’ll be better and won’t look at people so just… " the girl hugged her knees again and the volume of emotion raised her voice as she begged into her curled up form: ”Please, I’ll do anything, just…” her voice became weaker and more vulnerable and, as a personal desperate prayer, she pleaded: ”don’t make me be alone again…”

At the end of the world

Toru had witnessed this behavior before, witnessed and partially experienced what had caused this to happen. The bucket cast off to the side the slight wet spot on the ground. A telltale sign of a prank or intended bullying. There was both mischief, comradery and cruelty bundled into the academy. It was difficult to navigate as some children did not understand to this very moment, even on the cusp of graduation, that they were training to fight for their nation, their village, the very person that they had bullied.

They would never graduate from the academy, as they did not have the conviction necessary to do so. Their fear of death, or lack of ability to sacrifice themselves would be their undoing.

The Mizukage did not move a muscle he simply stared at Naoko, blinking slowly, thinking slowly, waiting for her to finish the tumble of words that were falling from her lips. Hurt, scrapped, bruised words. The whimpers of a shaken core and an ego tinging with purple and green like a stormy sky at sea.

The truth of the matter was that almost everyone in Kirigakure no Sato was different varieties of pale. The sun was strongest in the summer on their temperate island but it was still more humid and muggy than it was prolifically sunny. It was, in Toru's mind, strange that she was being singled out for a trait that was common even with the children that were mocking her. Perhaps they did not see the tone of their own skin.

Perhaps they had never dared to inspect just how pale their leader was. It had been the slightest blessing that Toru had been born with white hair, which allowed him to have less contrast between his skin and his features. Unlike Naoko whose contrast was more than just a little intense.

"Stand-up Naoko-san. My students do not wallow, they do not succumb to the whims of their assailants." Toru stated firmly though he reached over to offer the girl a hand.

"Do not utter nonsense about spirits and ghosts, I only know one young woman who communes with them - and she certainly does not weep over how ignorant people perceive her."

His tone was not relieving or kind but the words he offered did not dismiss Naoko as much as they attempted to remind her of who she was and how she should carry herself in spite of how the world treated her.

The girl stopped talking and looked up at Toru. Black bangs parted to show big golden eyes now red and puffy from crying. It must have been nice to be Mizukage and not be bothered by people because they had to respect him. No one bullied him for how he looked, probably because Toru-sama was pretty and cool looking. She took his hand to get back and thought of what she had just heard. His students didn’t cry so she wiped her face down with her elbow and inhaled back the need to continue crying. Given a task was always something easy to focus on and try to get her mind off things. Busy hands knew peace, after all.

However, she was hurt and that wouldn’t go away. No child deserved to feel fear outcast by their peers but the girl had not known much kindness in her life so she had no idea how her life should go.

”It’s my birthday today so I thought today would be nice.” she admitted and went back to staring at the ground again. One arm clutched the other close to her side and she pulled her neck towards her shoulders. ’Stand tall… how can I…’

The girl bent down to pick up her practice weapon and then the bucket of water. ”This needs to be brought back.” she slowly began walking to the building with the bokken dragging behind her. It looked like her soul had left her body.

Though Toru did not know the intricate feelings that were running through Naoko now, he knew how she felt - he had met plenty of hardship in his own life. From peers, and otherwise. This made him more resilient with time, he had been less and less prone to tears until the well dried up entirely. A moment like a snapshot had made him the person that Naoko saw today, and even then it had taken years to be even remotely empathetic towards how other's felt, to be accepting of the differences his shinobi and the people he ruled presented. Toru had no easy road down, nor an easy road up into all of this seeming fame and glory that he was currently shirking.

The Mizukage watched in perfect silence as if he were a ghost himself as Naoko picked up both bucket and bokken and dragged them away without any zeal for life. It was understood, she had just been a victim of a group bullying situation, it would be reported. But she could not shrink into the shadows, if they feared her now, then they did not fear her enough - she had to garner respect through power if kindness was not enough.

But it was her birthday, so she said, and now he felt was not the time to give her a secondary lecture. That would be for later, with her mind and spirit lifted. When she carried her shoulders lightly, proudly.

"Put the bucket and bokken away, and come with me. If it is your birthday, it is only right we celebrate."

Toru's own birthday had not been too long ago, but he did not celebrate it. He made a single public appearance on the national holiday that was his birth and otherwise tried to be alone as much as possible - despite all of the requirements of feasts and some such nonsense.

She stopped mid step and instantly perked up. Her ears would twitch like those of a fox if they could and now staning tall, the girl turned her upper body sideways to look back. ”We’ll… celebrate?” Heat pooled in her cheeks as her face finally got some colour and her eyes gleamed with dreamy anticipation. Never in her life had she gone out to celebrate her birthday. Nor had she ever celebrated it with anyone besides her aunt. This turn of events made the day a lot brighter. The sun was shining brighter through the mist, so to say.

The girl quickly walked back to the nearest supply closet to set the bucket back and then to a weapons locker to leave her bokken. She hesitated slightly as she shut the door of the locker and a memory came back to her from when she was little:

’Kohaku… Good things come only if you behave. Aunty can only love you if you are a good girl.’

She would hear her late aunt’s voice. Suddenly the scent of summer herbs from their garden came to her senses and she’d remember the smile her aunt used to give - and her warm hands and the way her heartbeat sounded in an embrace. Listening and following orders meant that she could be loved. Perhaps if Naoko did it well enough for Toru-sama, she could feel love one day again.

The raven haired student returned to Toru soon. ”I’ve put the things away. Where shall we go?” For all intents and purposes, she was ready to leave. A shiver took over her involuntarily, however. Her clothes and hair were still wet and a cool breeze had went straight through her.

Toru waited patiently, as was his nature to do so. The girl appeared excited now at the prospect of getting to celebrate her birthday a perfect 180 degree shift from where she had been mentally only moments ago when Toru had found her. It was strange to see. Toru had never been one to have many emotions at all, his range had once been somewhere between angry and disjointed nothingness. Nowadays it was all about being level-headed and so for the most part he only ever exemplified nothingness.

The girl turned to him after an extended pause putting away her bokken.

"We are going to where you live, so that you might change clothes." It would not be appropriate, after all, for her to attend a nice birthday dinner with the Mizukage dressed in wet academy clothes.

"After that, you will find out in due time. It will be a surprise."

Toru did not often eat fancy, he was not someone who enjoyed audacious meals, often opting for eating at home, suffering through burnt meals as he was not the best cook in the world. But he did regularly try to cook so he had gotten better in years gone by. But he would at least take her to a nice little barbeque spot, nothing extremely fancy, but it was a good treat for an academy student of few means.

"Lead the way."

”A surprise?” she repeated and peered up at the slightly taller teenager. Blood rushed to her cheeks and she smiled. Never before had anyone besides her aunt had a nice surprise for her. Usually the surprises she got at the academy or home weren’t the nice kind. There was one time, however, when a sparrow had crashed in her window and stayed on her windowsill last summer. Naoko cared for it until it felt better. It only took a couple hours for the bird to feel better but it was nice because the animal wasn’t scared of her and was not something she expected to see in the morning - ever, really. Naoko had never told anyone that story.

The pair would leave the academy and walk through the streets of Kiri towards a two story apartment building in the residential district. It was hidden in a small alleyway only wide enough for one pedestrian - two would need to turn sideways to not bump shoulders. The building was quite unimpressive. Chipped beige paint and only held four apartments. There was a rock fence and a small gate leading into a small courtyard stacked on one side with tools for upkeep and some rubbish bags to be brought out later. All four flats had doors facing the courtyard and there were two on the ground floor and two on the second floor. A narrow and steep flight of wooden steps was stationed on the right and looked to be the only way to get to the landings on the second floor.

Naoko would walk up and stop at the door directly in front of the staircase before rummaging in her pockets for a key. Once found, she’d unlock a dark wooden door to a one room flat. You could see through it. There was a bathroom on the right upon entry and a small step up into the hall before which she left her shoes. The kitchen was narrow and also on the right after the bathroom with the counters tidy but a corner full of labeled containers and a stack of books. It looked like she spent a lot of time in the kitchen. A hobby, perhaps? The wall facing the living room had a hole made in it to function as a bar of sorts. The rest of the rectangular living space was a tatami covered living area. Surprisingly tidy, too. There were some worn down and badly sewn up stuffed animals in one corner, a small desk and a folded up futon as a makeshift couch. Two photos hung on the cracked wall - one of her aunt by herself and one of her parents before Naoko was born. Since her parents passed away when she was a baby, there were no photos of the three of them together. The place smelled like green tea since she kept some out for frequent use and the apartment had one window at the end and faced another courtyard behind a lower building so the ground floor apartments probably had the view of a wall behind their window.

Without much ceremony, she walked behind the corner to the closet in the corner and rummaged around for dry clothes before going to change. If Toru came in, she’d just use the bathroom.

Eventually the girl would emerge dressed traditionally for a change. She had a simple kimono with cranes on them and put down her gata to step into. Under normal circumstances, the girl avoided traditional clothes because she was compared to one of those cursed dolls in folklore but this was a time to celebrate and Toru was with her so, surely, it would be fine.

It looked like she was ready.

At the end of the world

Toru followed in silence, proving in this very moment just how little of a talker he was as their extended walk meant he said not a word. In truth, the Mizukage spent the majority of that time contemplating why it was the girl was being bullied. Had she never tried to stand up for herself? Create a fierce aura around her that nobody would dare? It was a strange detail, a thing he hoped to remedy with time. But there was no quick fix for the situation, and kind words were only a balm. She would not become strong through coddling. If she was to become a shinobi, nothing could ever put her down.

Perhaps the status of genin would change her, but in truth Toru did not believe this to be the case. The status of genin would challenge her unlike any snot-faced academy student would ever challenge her. The promise of death and murder as a shinobi, an endless hard labor... That would be much more difficult than the bullying and teasing of a child. He hoped she would become strong and confident before death stared her in the eyes and threatened her life. He hoped she would not curl away from action in fear and thus be cut down.

They arrived in due time - fortunately without any interruptions from any groupies, proving that he had lost them good and well - and Toru respected the girl's space only stepping just inside the door and not pressing any further.

She would change and arrive to him in a simple kimono, at least something dry. Toru nodded - he himself was prone to wearing yukata and other more traditional pieces on a more daily basis so this did not necessarily lead to any reaction other than to motion. Now the young man would head down the stairs and begin leading the way towards the nicer part of the entertainment district.

It was a bit of a walk but soon they would arrive a popular street full of restaurants and food vendors, a spot that had been noticeably thriving in recent years.

Toru took a turn and reached out towards some linen dark green curtains allowing Naoko inside first. The restaurant was quite large and could easily accommodate large groups. It smelled heavily of meat and smoke, it awakened the senses.

The host immediately recognized Toru as the Mizukage, bowed deeply and respectfully offered that the pair follow him. Deep into the restaurant, behind some closed sliding doors a private space for them to eat and celebrate.

"It is Fuji Naoko's birthday," He would utter to the host who would hand them menus and bow deeply again.

"What is it that you would like to drink, Naoko-san?" The host would ask. Once she answered Toru would provide his own drink of choice - a warm barley tea - and the host would scurry away to alert the waiter that the Mizukage had arrived with a guest.

It had been a while since she wore traditional clothes. Walking in gata was something she had to get used to again but, being the adaptable kind, the girl quickly felt comfortable and quite enjoyed the sound their clacking made. The enhanced noise of her steps mixed with the rest of the city sounds and aligned with her heartbeat. It helped her gather her thoughts.

Naoko couldn’t help but notice looks from passing villagers. Her heart beat faster and blood rushed to her face from the curious stares but she knew that this time it was not because she might look like a cursed doll but because of who she was walking with. While heading to the surprise location, the girl glanced up at Toru: ’Must be so nice being this well known… people must always have nice things to say to Toru-sama.’ It must have been true! Just look how people would watch both of them as they passed by.

When they arrived at the place, Naoko thanked Toru for holding the curtain open for her and was immediately taken aback by the mix of sensations from the interior. They entered and it looked quite grand indoors for someone who had never been to such a place. Her eyes sparkled and she couldn’t help but feel hungry. It was a bit surprising to immediately have someone who worked there come over and give them a table - she bowed as well and matched the depth of the man’s bow. The whole experience so far was amazing and Naoko had completely forgotten how sad she was earlier. Having been bullied a lot, the girl didn’t think much of it at first. After all, words were just words and she really wanted to make friends so she thought that, if she went along with it, it would blow over and something others and her could laugh about later. But her shyness around peers made it difficult for them to understand her intentions and for her to express herself so the dynamic festered. Even so, she thought that it was pretty much harmless and just a misunderstanding - she still thought that - but some pranks just got mean and that combined with loneliness had made her hit a low point.

No need to dwell on the past, her aunt always said.

When asked what she’d like to drink, the girl instantly exclaimed: ”Yuzu!” referring to the best type of lemonade in her opinion. She did feel a bit embarrassed about saying it while the host hadn’t even finished the question but apparently it went over well because the host giggled slightly at it, perceiving the girl’s rashness as cute.

The raven haired student glanced around the room to take in every detail she could. Afterwards, she’d take in the menu. It didn’t take long after glancing over the list of tasty things that Naoko’s stomach growled quite loudly and she froze… maybe…. Maybe no one heard?

”Toru-sama, do you dine here a lot?” she’d ask and would hug the menu in front of her stomach to build a layer between it and him in case it would growl again.

The room they were in was small but private, they were seated at a wooden table with some chairs lining it, and walls in four perfect rectangular corners. There was one painting mounted on the wall at the head of the table but that was it. The doors helped to mitigate some of the sound out in the main part of the restaurant and would insure their overall privacy.

Toru was inspecting the painting idly when Naoko inquired as to whether or not he ate here often. The Mizukage shook his head.

"No. I prefer to eat at home."

Toru was not an exceptional cook, in fact by most metrics he was at best mediocre. But old habits died hard, the boy was not one to spend extraordinary amounts of money and he very much still acted like someone without much money in the bank even if that was and had not been true for several years now.

On occasion when laziness was prominent he would eat out for lunch, but more often than not he would bring a bento from home and nibble on leftover rice, and tough leftover meat from days before without much shame.

"Do not worry about the menu, I will order for us. What kind of meat do you prefer?"

The two meats offered on the menu were pork and beef and so the girl would have to choose and Toru would create a proper order from what she desired.

”Beef!” Once again she answered really quickly. The girl must have been hungry.

”I don’t know why but I have always liked red meat better. I’m also a fan of strawberries, watermelon, spinach, red beans and sesame seeds.” she shared. It was a surprise she enjoyed baking sweets so much when she wasn’t the biggest fan of bread. Little did Naoko know that her tastes were specifically seeking out foods with more iron in them.

”What kind of food do you like, Toru-sama? Do you have a favorite?” Maybe if she knew it, she could make it one day or learn to make it. It could be fun and also it could be a way to try to make Toru happy.

”Oh, also, we had this dueling class yesterday where they got two years of students together and we had to fight in a ring to push our opponents outside of it. I was up against this boy named Yuki Tsugime…” she trailed off in a story.

It was full of action. Tsugime was obviously stronger than her. Also, she had tried to introduce herself properly and wish him good luck but she said it too quietly and was too shy to speak up so the other kids thought she was mumbling curses… regardless, she kept the boy at distance and, while, he did draw blood after she was sent flying with a kick, Naoko managed to enter "the zone” and not let up on offense. In the end, she won. Would Toru be proud?

Toru nodded, he also preferred beef so it was a happy coincidence. In terms of his favorite food he had to consider it, he liked mackerel though that was what he ate most often because it was easy to acquire, at the same time he found himself getting overwhelmed with the flavor time and time again. It was the every day food, not the food he loved most.

"Thinly sliced beef brisket or pork belly, don't really mind how it is prepared." He was trying to recall when he had been asked this before, it had happened - once, perhaps. But no one really gave Toru's life much mind, and he kept it that way. It was better to be secluded and private as a leader than to be extremely well known and bogged down.

He was already bogged down, after all, having some privacy insured his sanity.

As the girl shifted topic then and proceeded to go on about her sparring, Toru appeared to listen intently. The expression of his features did not shift considerably, but it was clear by the way he looked at Naoko that he was actively partaking in her story, nodding at the beats gently that she wanted to emphasize.

"I see." He would comment finally at the end. "Congratulations, I am sure you will accomplish great things if you keep growing." He was like a never overly satisfied parent. Soft in his compliment, but always seeking more progress.

Just then the waiter appeared, introducing herself with a bow and offering the two beverages. Yuzu in a taller glass with a bright yellow color. Barley tea in a stout mug steaming with its light amber color. Toru nodded in gratitude and wrapped his fingers around the cup.

"Ready to order?" The waiter asked with a smile.

"Yes - we will have the full experience for two, beef."

"Would you like the brisket or ribs?"

"Can we do both?"

"Yes, sir."

"Then both."

The waiter bowed after taking the order and disappeared.

"My day was not as exciting as yours, I must admit, but it is substantially improving."

”Getting better?” she repeated and fell quiet for a moment. Did this mean that her mentor was enjoying himself in her company? She couldn’t remember the last time she didn’t feel like she was bothering people by being near them so, it made her feel very happy.

The student felt a warmth spread from her core all the way through her body to the tip of her nose, ears and fingertips. A happy smile bloomed on her face and she straightened up. Her shoulders relaxed and all she let out was: "I’m glad”

It was such a nice birthday! It felt like the events taking place just an hour or two earlier were never a concern. Naoko hummed happily as she adjusted the cutlery in front of her in straight lines and then took a sip of her drink.

”You know, Toru-sama. I used to have an aunt. She was a medical ninja and took me in when I lost my parents. She used to say that I reminded her of dad because we had the same eyes.” she paused to blow her bags out of the way and pointed at her irises. ”That’s why she called me Kohaku. For the amber in my eyes.” she said with nostalgia in her voice. ”I really like that nickname. Naoko just means a child that is docile. I wish people would call me Kohaku more often but telling that to other kids is hard because they think I’m cursing them when I start speaking and they run away.” she sighed and took another sip from her drink with some air getting in the straw so it made a slurping noise which later made her look down a bit embarrassed but coaxed out a chuckle.

Their food arrived…
