Homare is standing in the middle of the training field, not sure if she can keep up with all the training she needs to do in order to be ready for the Chuunin Exams in time. She'd missed the last two, and she wasn't sure if the other Genin would wait for her to be ready for a third. She knows Keneo Hozuki is preparing to enter this one, as well, and so she needs to train even harder to make sure she can keep up with her peers. After all, a Hozuki is a very powerful shinobi clan, as opposed to her more accursed Mayonaka clan.

So she'd asked a stranger, quite unlike Homare's normal, more inwardly-drawn personality, to train with her to be able to prepare for the Chuunin Exams. She rather liked training with Sora, but she was also quite busy with other missions and with her two other Genin students, so she felt the need to train with others. It might also give her some much-needed perspective. She doesn't know all of the other participants she might run into in the next set of exams, and it was important for her to ask many different people for help with training.

Still, asking a stranger made her nervous, as was made apparent by her four upper arms fidgeting a little with one another while her two lowest hands are fiddling with her axe and katana, as though unsure of what to do with them.

"So..."

Being asked by a stranger to train is a whole new experience. Even more so when said stranger is being all fidgety and shy about it. A hand gently placed upon her forehead, she exhales, then slowly inhales as she combs her fringe back.

"Well, I guess we can do a quick self-introduction. I'm Funato Yuzuki. Good at fishing, handling fishing rods and tracking people."

She doesn't quite know what clan would give a person that many arms, but she assumes it has something to do with arachnids.

"I'm assuming you're a genin. And you're prepping for the Chuunin exams or something." Thank goodness for Hōzuki Keneō reminding her about the upcoming exam. That's the only reason someone would ask to train with her. Other than their interest in her clan or a senior's appraisal of her capabilities as a chuunin.

"Are you a weapons specialist? Or ninjutsu? Genjutsu?" The grip she has on those weapons doesn't look like that of an expert, but looks can be rather deceiving. "Did you wanna refine whatcha already got going? Or try and patch the stuff that don't quite work?"

She isn't too sure how much time there is left to the exam. Hasn't had to know since she'd passed it about two years ago. And she really isn't all that good at teaching people, so she'll have to pray that this girl knows exactly what she wants out of this training.

"Whatever comes to mind. Even rough ideas would help me narrow stuff down!"

Homare is a bit surprised that the stranger doesn't assume she's a weapons specialist; after all, she's got two of them! But maybe she's not holding them as well as she should... She tries to think back on how Sora had taught her to hold weapons, but that didn't really match... she'd been taught to hold one weapon with both hands after all! So it was only natural that her grip was a little bit awkward. Then she realizes in all her awkwardness at asking a stranger for help with training that she hadn't actually introduced herself properly, and so she stops and does her best to return the appropriate greeting.

"Apologies. I am Mayonaka Homare. I am indeed a Genin..."

That gives her a bit of pause. Was her adolescence showing so obviously? No matter, she'd continue her introduction and the explanation of what she was looking to do training in.

"At the moment, I am a Ninjutsu expert, but I feel I must train to improve my skill with weaponry. In particular, I've found a style I like which makes use of two weapons at the same time, and I'd like to practice a jutsu or two from that style in order to better prepare for the Chuunin Exams..."

Perhaps that was why she assumed Homare was a Genin? Because the Chuunin Exams are coming soon, and so Genin are ramping up their training? She hoped that was the case.

"Dual weapons, huh..." The dual wielding isn't so much the problem for her as it is the fact that she personally doesn't have much experience with either katana or axe. Ah well, surely she can derive what best to do from the movement of her own weapon and her actual experiences in the field.

One foot raised behind and one hand to hook around the ankle, she pulls it closer to her body and feels the stretch. Put it down and repeat on the other side. All whilst she balances her fishing rod against her shoulder.

"Alrighty... That shouldn't be too hard. A spar then? Or do you want to run it through before we go at it?"

Testing jutsu against living targets is a lot more different as compared to fighting with stationary dummies. She wouldn't refuse the girl a practice run if she needed it.

Girl? Is it rude to be calling her a kid? Surely she was around Gon's age? Does teen work better? Would calling the Mizukage a boy be rude? Probably if they were speaking as leader and chuunin versus if they were simply speaking as friends. Which they are not.

God knows she has no friends.

Homare nods when Yuzuki states that it shouldn't be too hard, although the follow-up question of whether she wants a spar, or just to run through the technique before they get to training. She hadn't put much thought into the idea of sparring against the Chuunin, and thought it might be a bit... beneath a Chuunin to be asked to spar by a Genin. After all, their difference in rank and experience might mean that Yuzuki wouldn't get much out of any kind of spar, especially since Homare is from a rather rare clan; in fact, her mother and father were the only Mayonaka that she knew of in all of Kirigakure, and she'd been learning the spider techniques almost purely from trying things out herself.

"I didn't consider a spar being an option. I thought it might be inappropriate of me to ask for such a thing from a higher ranked kunoichi. I would simply look to try out a technique, perhaps first without resistance, and then with your guidance, and then perhaps testing it with some resistance."

After her answer, it seems that Yuzuki was wondering something else, and before she can ask what is on her mind, the brunette asks her rather forwardly about her age. A younger Homare might have frowned at the impropriety of such a question, especially from another girl. Surely she must know how rude such a question was? But Homare was used to this level of informality, and had no problems with simply answering such personal questions anymore.

"I am nineteen years of age."

"Don't worry about ranks or stuff. There's always things for me to learn from genins and even academy students." A flaw in her technique, a way to streamline her movements, a different way of thinking, a new way to wield her weapon. "Hell, I ask jounins for spars all the time."

Sometimes, she'd be asked by the jounin for a quick spar. Kept them keen on the seas and long voyages.

"It's fine if ya wanna keep simple though." She could still pick up some inspiration from observing.

As for the whole issue about asking for age, she's never quite understood it. She wouldn't mind giving her age to whoever asked. Sure, her sister has kicked her ass for asking strangers such questions, but they're alone right here, right now. And it isn't like she intends to go around the village yelling out a number.

19 was not the answer she expected, her eyes widening as her mouth forms a perfectly shaped 'o'.

"You're older than me, so you really don't need to be all formal around me!"

Only time she supposes it matters would be if they're out in the field and there's a chain of command to be followed. For now, she simply rests her hands on the handle of her fishing rod and idly drums her fingers against it.

"Do whatever preps ya need, ask any questions ya have. Whenever you're ready, we can get it going!"

Homare is a bit confused at being told to ignore issues of rank. This was a somewhat uncommon sentiment for Homare to experience, as she had been taught to consider rank, then age when it comes to the level of respect she must show for the other person. At the very least, it seems she's willing to have them keep the training rather simple, so that's quite a relief for her. She also notices that after giving her answer for the question about her age, that the other girl quite openly shows an expression of surprise, despite Homare keeping a rather more stoic expression on her face. The openness of the other girl makes her blink in a rare show of surprise as well.

She's actually a little bit disappointed in herself when she's told that the Chuunin in front of her was actually younger than she was, making it feel like she had perhaps not been training as much or as hard as she really should be training, in order to prepare for the Chuunin Exams. She may have to redouble her efforts on the training field and with the mission board, although available missions were becoming rather scarce for her particular rank lately. She's given the go-ahead to try and get started on training, and so she puts these thoughts out of her head for now as she turns to the side, facing away from Yuzuki and gripping the handle of her shinobi axe with one lower hand, while her other lower hand is reaching across to grip the handle of her katana. Her middle and upper arms clasp one another behind her back, ensuring that they're out of the way and not going to make themselves an obstacle for her first try of the technique.

With a single step forwards, she draws both the katana and the axe, swinging both at the same time. Or she would have, if the axe head had not gotten caught on her waist sash, halting the other hand from drawing. Homare sighs and then steps back again to prepare for a second try, though this time she leaves the sword and the axe drawn to avoid the same problem occurring during the second try.

Though oblivious to many things, Yuzuki is by no means unable to pick up on the current atmosphere. Though the silence is kept, it doesn't take much for her to piece things together. Running contrary to the teachings of village and shinobi in general, her whole attitude is an anomaly.

Sure, she wouldn't go around disrespecting those who ranked above her. But she wasn't going to be pushing her rank around either around those who would catch up soon enough. As long as they weren't on a mission, there simply wasn't any point to doing so in her eyes.

Whatever floats their boat. That's what she tells herself as she latches onto the genin's movements. The numerous arms must be a hindrance of sorts if she's clasping them behind her back. Ignoring the whole topic of 'additional limbs' which she has close to no experience with, then comes the next problem, the catching of her weapon within her sash.

At the very least, Homare seems to realise her mistake, taking up her stance for yet another attempt. This time, with her weapons unsheathed. From what little she knows of swordsmanship, the technique being practiced here isn't necessarily rooted in iai or battō.

For now, she holds her tongue, merely watching close to gain a better grasp on what Homare envisions herself doing.

Homare looks sideways at Yuzuki, curious what she must be thinking seeing her failure on that first try, but also worried about it at least as much. But her focus returns to trying out the technique as she swings both the axe and the sword at the same time, making a crossing motion with both weapons, but now she's a bit disappointed in the much shorter range of the axe. While the axe does give her a lot more power, it now finally occurs to Homare that using a pair of weapons that aren't weighted or even shaped the same is actually having a negative effect on her use of the technique. She returns the axe back to her sash, and although Yuzuki might think she's just giving up for now, she does something that probably seems strange to the Chuunin at first.

Homare chews a little, almost like she's chewing on gum, and then the hand that had once been used to swing her axe now reaches up and into her mouth, and she pulls out a long, golden string, then does so again and again as more thread is formed into the shape of a blade as it hardens, until she now has two steel-hard, sharp katana, one for each hand. Now she returns to the starting position, arms crossed in front of her and then finally producing the desired effect of swinging both blades in an X shape in front of her, one of the most basic of the Nitojutsu fighting style techniques, much more effectively than she'd done it the two previous times, and feeling quite accomplished with it.

A soft whistle escapes her as she watches the speedy forging of a new blade from the most unlikely source. Golden webs that harden... on contact with air? Or fuelled by chakra? Either way, the fact that Homare is able to create a sword in the likeness of the one she possesses suggests she has an innate sense for her weapons.

In that case, she would probably be fine even without guidance. After all, she's already figured out the problem of different weight, different classes of weapon. In Homare's case, the technique seems to be best performed with two katanas instead of one.

"Pretty solid movements. You could probably land a hit if you catch your opponent off guard. If you take as much time to set up for it as you did though, your opponent will either rush in to intercept or back up if they're cautious." What with having to keep her other hands out of the way. "Speed would be key to closing that gap."

That, or a cheeky little trick she uses herself at times.

"Are you planning to transition to using two swords instead?" A genuine question. There are both pros and cons to her decision. "You've already realised some of the problems yourself. Reach, weight, shape. And you do seem more certain with two swords than one mixed with an axe."

Either way, there are things that can be finetuned, ways to compensate for differences in weapon if she so chooses.

It seems that her ability to create a new weapon from her spider thread was considered rather impressive, and she blinks at the sound of praise for her simply making another katana from her clan's specialized golden thread. Praise was somewhat rare in Homare's life, so the whistle was a bit confusing for a moment, but she accepted it in any case. When she's told that her movements are pretty solid, she's actually a bit surprised as well; she'd only done a little training in this style of fighting so far, and this was rather new, since she'd only done training with other single sword users so far, and even her sensei used only one katana for combat. She has to hold back a bit of a smirk when she's told that the time for setting up would possibly give an opponent an opening to attack her while she's constructing a weapon.

"They might have a hard time getting through several Ninjutsu techniques in order to even reach me... Multiple hands means I can work on something and still use handseals for jutsu."

Despite the arrogant tone that was somewhat new to Homare (and which she suddenly felt very self-conscious about, where did that confidence come from?), she took the suggestion into consideration. After all, a person would be able to move faster than she used handseals, more than likely, and so might be able to close distance faster than she can use a Ninjutsu technique to keep them away. Then comes the question about switching from using the axe and a sword to just using two katana, and she has to admit that it's much easier to use this style with two evenly-made swords rather than one sword and one unbalanced axe. She'd taken note of it to a lesser extent when she had been training with Ken, now that she thought of it.

"I have used this axe often, and it has been effective... But it is almost certainly not as useful as a second blade of similar make."

It's a bit of a sad admission, although this of course doesn't mean she has to give up her axe, just perhaps use it as a back-up weapon instead of one of her main weapons.

"Yes, perhaps two better balanced blades are better in general, as well as when using this style of combat. Thank you for the insight, but I still have to practice more with this technique."

Alas, it just wasn't meant to be. And what a hefty sigh it is that escapes from her lips. Using ninjutsu required both her hands, which made it pretty hard to toss out additional tricks in the midst of wielding Isonami. Perhaps, she should look into the matter and get to training before she winds up learning the hard way.

Focusing back up, she shifts her weight from one foot to another as she chews through Homare's responses.

"The difference in weight can probably help you break through defenses. Swing from light to heavy and quite a lot of swordsman crumple under the sudden change in force."

She knows she would have a little trouble keeping up, even if she was already borderline struggling to fight against those adept in dual-wielding.

Ever considered using string or wire to compensate for the axe's reach?" Spoken in the way that only a person intimately familiar with doing so would. "Sure, it might lose a bit of that impact. But if you only release the string close to the point of contact, it carries most of the momentum of your swing and could probably catch a person off guard."

As for the axehead catching on things mid-swing, that would have to boil down to her spatial awareness.

Homare almost feels a bit bad for Yuzuki when she expresses a desire to be able to utilize Ninjutsu while being able to do other things, but her sympathy isn't really going to be able to help the other girl learn how to do that. She thinks she'd seen Sora do something kind of impressive once, though...

"The option to use one-handed seals is available for those who have trained to do so. And there are a few Ninjutsu techniques that do not require handseals."

Granted, Homare is aware that such techniques tend to lack either power or a high degree of control, which she appreciates being able to utilize more thanks to having additional hands free. For now, she simply allows her chakra to dissipate from the golden thread sword she had created, sticking it upright in the ground as it gradually disintegrates. At the mention of Yuzuki's idea for using the axe for things other than the usual handheld purpose, she lifts the axe and spits a spider string onto the handle, but then just letting it down only half a meter makes Homare realize a fairly serious flaw in using the axe in this way. At the very least, Yuzuki can see that Homare had considered it before noticing the flaw in this idea.

"I'm not sure I can exert a good deal of control over an axe this way, as I would if I were to wield it in my hand. It would certainly be devastating... if I could ensure that the blade is always facing the direction of the swing. It's not possible to do so when I spin it from my thread."

With that, she returns the axe back to her hip and disconnects the line she'd already attached to the handle of the axe before she draws another blade out, golden once more as she spins the new katana from her mouth, and then hardens it as it takes its final shape before she tries the attack one more time, this time getting it exactly right while she swings both her real blade and the golden one. She's relieved that she's managed to get the balance and timing right on such a technique that seemed to rely so heavily on both elements.

"True. I'll probably have to work on figuring it out." A simple nod to such advice. A nudge in the right direction is better than none at all.

As for the way she attempts to wield that axe with the string... Right, right. The difference in experience and all. Those who are used to holding their weapons in their hands often have a hard time wrapping their heads around the whole idea she crafts in her head.

"Well, I can teach you if you're ever interested. Just let me know." Her weight moving from one foot back to the other. A subconscious shift of her fishing pole from one shoulder to another. She hums, and lets sleeping dogs lie.

Back to practicing. This time, that swing seems that bit closer to what Homare was probably envisioning.

"Do you tend to swing that golden blade harder than the real one? 'cos you're used to swinging that axe around." Or maybe she switches it up with whichever hand she decides to wield it in for the day. Yuzuki's no master of the rigid arts. Any minute difference in force is only really perceptible to her when it strikes her.

And of course, a mind as free as hers means that her attention gets snagged upon the way that the katana stuck in the ground disintegrates.

Homare might have found it somewhat difficult to keep from swinging the blade in her axe hand harder had she not practiced with sword use long before she ever picked up that same Shinobi Axe the first time; Sora had taught her well in the use of katanas, so it was more a return to normalcy when she used the new golden blade she'd just crafted from her spider spit. She's a bit surprised at how quickly she finds it even more familiar, despite how long she'd tried to make use of the axe. Two evenly balanced swords really was better, and she answers the other girl honestly.

"It's pretty easy, actually. I've been training under the swordswoman that is considered on par with the Seven Swordsmen ever since I was in the Academy, so I'm actually more accustomed to using swords than I am with the axe... Perhaps this change should be made rather more permanent."

She's a bit surprised that the other girl seems to recognize that her spider thread is made of chakra, but now that she seems to know, she might as well not leave it up for her to guess more. That would be a waste of time at this point, so she sighs and then shrugs before getting rid of the current golden thread sword she's wielding as well; it seems that she's gotten the technique down well enough that she can probably get it perfect with a little practice on her own.

"I can make a lot of thread at a time, it's just a bit costly for me to do it, and it hardens when it makes contact with air, so I have to work with it fast before it gets too hard to work with. I can dismiss the stuff too, and then it just disintegrates."
