CLAN IDEOLOGY

Where fire is often a force of destruction, the Fumetsu clan lives to prove that there is life and beauty to it. While not directly named after it, their clan was inspired by legends of the phoenix, a creature that represents both flames and life. While they have not directly taken to the name of the phoenix, the fact that their name alludes to immortality and undying makes it clear how much pride and ambition they carry within themselves.

Though they are not immortal like a phoenix, the Fumetsu are adamant about the fact that no clan or organization in the Shinobi world can control the element of fire like they can. If they weren't living as secluded, then they'd easily awaken the ire of many with their stance. The immortal bird clan are a rather refined people who value life, beauty and wisdom. They aren't necessarily hard to get along with, but they have certain beliefs that have been ingrained in them since birth.

The Fumetsu are often likened to birds, soaring above the common people, and one can sometimes see it shine through their characters. While their pride will not allow them to say it out loud, they like being treated well and with respect, even more so than the majority of people, and are vengeful if that pride is hurt. The clan members are hard to impress, but easy to offend. Yet despite that, they will still retain a gentle and balanced appearance, even if something's upset them. While they are raised to be good, if they feel like they lost face, they may act petty in retaliation.

While most members are not restricted to their freedom to follow their own path or marry someone they like, many will still live according to their clan's traditions and, for example, look for a partner that is a Katon user that can be integrated into the clan. To those who know them, the Fumetsu clan is a symbol of wealth and longevity. They might appear aloof and distant, but they always keep a clean name and respect honor. Both powerful and wealthy, this clan does not overly concern themselves with 'worldly' affairs and often sticks to their mountain when they can. Power is not a desire, but merely a part of their path of fire, what the clan is really concerned with is finding immortality through fire.

Just as they can be proud and sometimes hard to handle, they are also gentle and not shy of giving aid to those in need. There's pride in their abilities, and there's also pride in using them for good. While they are first and foremost medics based on fire abilities and fire ninjutsu users, they are also quite physically capable, even if they won't spawn a taijutsu genius.

CLAN HIERARCHY

The Fumetsu clan is led by one distinct leader who will have the say in the clan's matters. This person is elected by the elders of the clan, of which there are always nine people. Both the clan leader and the sect elders can only be people who have managed to learn the hijutsu. If a spot becomes vacant, then new elders are selected by the clan leader. If the clan leader becomes vacant, however, then the whole clan will come together to decide the new leader. This may be through internal politics or even combat, if voting is not conclusive. These ten people decide over the fate of the clan like a ruler and their advisors.

Below these leading figures, the clan does not have a strict ranking or division system. Their worth in the clan comes from both their abilities as a Shinobi, as well as seniority. While seniority is respected, what really matters is talent and ability, as well as the honor a clan member has earned themselves. While not a strict, set-in-stone ranking, a person's individual achievements may grant them access to more resources and techniques. Aside from that, the different branch families all have their own resources. They will sometimes compete with each other for resources and political power in the clan, but there is no larger divide, the clan is a unified force to the outside.

Those who are non-Shinobi or have very little talent in the fire path, but are still associated with the clan, become servants or guards. While these members are allowed to leave the clan to look for their luck elsewhere, they usually stay out of pride. The Fumetsu families in the clan often have a servant or two who helps with organizational duties and keeping eyes on the younger generation. The Fumetsu offspring is well taken care of and protected. The older generation takes matters regarding their kids very seriously.

CLAN HISTORY

The Legend Of A Phoenix

In the year 639, long before people thought of Shinobi villages, there existed a commune at the base of one of the tallest mountains. The people lived with nature and seemed simple on the outside, but most of them were practicing Shinobi arts of the fire path, both to keep themselves safe and surviving in the harsh mountains, as well as staying safe from outsiders. While they weren't that strong or proficient, they kept safe and content. One young man, however, who wasn't content with the situation they were living in had become very experienced with the mountain they were crowded under and regularly went on his own adventures climbing it. For most regular people that couldn't just walk on walls, this mountain was pretty much impossible to climb. As the soon-to-be chief of the little commune, this man acted recklessly despite having received warnings before, and actually managed to climb the mountain over several days to reach the summit. When he had recovered his wits, he stood atop the peak and looked out over lightning country as far as his eyes would permit. What eventually caught his eyes was not the scenery, but a large, feathered creature covered in what looked to be golden flames. The man could not make out for certain what it was, but in his heart only one answer was true, a phoenix. Inspired by what seemed to be the creature's wings regenerating in those flames, the young man sat down in meditation and cut open the palm of his hand, only to then coalesce the fire chakra in this hand to try and find a way to heal his hand. Eventually he had to climb down the mountain and return to his little village, but he would not give up his pursuit of what he experienced atop this mountain. While life around him changed, he would never forget that golden chakra and the feeling it had given him, sensing it. After spending months on guiding chakra through his body and into freshly inflicted wounds, he finally found a sliver of gold, having condensed and refined his chakra again and again. This chakra had none of the volatile feeling of fire, but gave warmth and a feeling of life. While he was excited, he had to spend many years to make this strand of chakra into a single technique, now considered the crude beginnings of the Fumetsu clan's Hijutsu. This technique was nowhere near perfect and would be further refined by future generations, but this one man is considered their founding ancestor. It is unclear what exactly their ancestor saw on top of that mountain, if he was having a sort of vision, or if there really was a giant creature wreathed in flames there, but years later the very spot atop the mountain would become a sacred meditation spot for the Fumetsu.

The Clan

Using his newly created fire technique, the first ancestor immediately became the leader of his village and rallied all the families of their commune together under his banner, having great things in mind for them with this newly developed technique. The story of how he created the technique spread among the village, and he would go on to become a legend to later generations. While not fully a clan yet, this technique bonded them together closer, and it was even easier to accept their connections. Come the year 723, and this commune had become a fully fledged clan, and it was the person known as the second ancestor that decided to move the commune about three quarters the way up the mountain, where they would assume a more noble position, only below the clouds. Pride had started to build in the hearts of the developing clan, as they no longer just had to rely on protecting themselves, but would also stand out with their abilities if they encountered strangers and now had to fear very few adversaries. Both in everyday life, and in combat, the clan was becoming almost fully self-sufficient, and the move up the mountain gave them another layer of safety. This move up the mountain would be where they would possibly still live far in the future, and while at first only consisted of simple housing, would later become magnificent temple-like buildings. While they didn't really have to fear anyone, all it took was for one person to stumble upon them and share the word that a clan wreathed in flames could heal ailments, for other Shinobi forces, and even for the daimyo to take note of them. While not much was known about them, some other Shinobi clans and families came to pay their respect, as the special technique the Fumetsu wielded was extremely rare. For the coming hundreds of years, especially as the clan evolved even further, they would receive a constant stream of visitor-bearing gifts that hoped to be healed of their sickness or injury. Despite their popularity, the clan did not allow for strangers to permanently gather around them and sent them off the mountain and away when their requests were taken care of.

Kumogakure And The Great Ninja Wars

When the first ninja village in a foreign country was established, the Fumetsu did not care and remained living their secluded life in the wealth they had amassed over the years. It is not exaggerated to say that the immortal Phoenix clan is one of the richest entities in the lightning country. Coupled with their self-sufficient ways and power, it was no wonder that they even declined becoming one of the founding clans of Kumogakure, at this point, the only one they had to take seriously from their perspective was the daimyo himself. At this point, the Hijutsu as it exists today had been refined for generations to reach this far. For years the clan refused to join up with Kumogakure out of their own pride, but they never sought hostile relations and even kept on good terms, going so far as to trade directly, but still keeping their distance. Despite countless generations of leaders for the clan, only a select few who bring extremely great merit will receive the title 'ancestor' in the clan. And it just so happened that just before the first great ninja war would break out, the leadership of the clan would change, and the woman now known as the third ancestor decided to listen to Kumo's call and joined their war alliance. While not warmongers or killers, the Fumetsu had never been more powerful and would play their part in the war. In fact, those known as 'immortals' showed that they would bleed just as much as anyone else, it was just that they themselves would show the smallest losses out of any clan in Kumogakure. When talking about them, nobody would insinuate that they were cowards, they were just that hard to kill. After the war, this clan had earned themselves a new type of respect and would officially join Kumogakure, even if they still retained their main residence outside of it. The clan stays away from political issues and just stands at the side of the village as a silent guardian, and while they are not the single most loyal entity to the village, they can also be relied on to be trustworthy and consistent. Neither the first nor the following ninja wars were events as big as they were for the rest of the country and clans, even when in the third Shinobi war the clan's leader at the time died in combat to protect his comrades.

Adaptation

After the wars, the Fumetsu also entered a new period of reorientation. As an established part of the village, they could no longer live as secluded as before but still held tight to their traditions and beliefs, but eventually the younger generation would open up more to meet with those around the clan. The topic of political involvement in the village came up a lot over the years, but in the end it was always shot down, so even when the village had a vacant leader position, the clan never even made an attempt at it. While the conflict between Kumo and Shimo was just a passing confrontation that the clan did not have much involvement in, mainly due to how short it was, the last major change was the great plague that claimed an unbelievable amount of lives. While this did not hurt the image of the clan in any way, as every one of them tried their best to come up with a way to cure this plague, they just could not keep up and were often left as helpless as other medics. More than the wars of years past, this plague took the greatest toll on the clan, and some voices of discontent began to arise. While they are in no way rebellious, in the most recent years after the plague, the immortal Phoenix clan has made their discontent known to the leading figures of Kumogakure and criticized the instability of their leadership privately. While they still do not get involved in intricate politics, they are keeping a much closer eye on what's happening in Kumo and especially what the Raikage and council are doing.

CLAN ABILITIES

The Flame Of Life

The Hijutsu of the Phoenix clan, which is coveted by pretty much any Katon user, is as old as it gets for this type of secret technique. The technique has been refined for hundreds of years, made more efficient and powerful to the point it has reached near perfection, and still, many Shinobi would not be able to learn it even if they got a hold of it. The so-proclaimed 'Flame Of Life' is a fire chakra refined to its purest form with all the volatility and destructive force removed, leaving only a bright golden flame that can not be used to harm, but only to spend life. As far as medical techniques go, one will be hard-pressed to find something more potent than this golden bundle of energy. The Flame Of Life can be applied in different ways, for one, it is capable of burning harmful chakras and substances such as poison away. Sicknesses can be combated by heightening the patient's bodily functions, reinvigorating and cleansing them. The most known application, though, is the mending of open wounds, which can make it seem like the grisliest wound is just being welded back together by the golden Flame. Even wounds that would otherwise be deadly might still be overcome.

Aside from their hijutsu, the clan members will often choose to learn medical jutsu, as the clan is well versed in a variety of techniques. To even learn their Hijutsu, a clan member must have an extreme control of Katon, which is usually already a talent that they are born with and only needs to be refined throughout their life. While they are known for their Hijutsu, it is not uncommon that between them the Fumetsu may take different paths from just pure medics. In fact, many of them will train in all types of different techniques, such as Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and even Fuinjutsu, with the exception being Genjutsu, which is seen as honorless and frowned upon in the clan. Having the phoenix as their role model, it is no wonder that the clan is close to birds in general, and while they do not actively train birds as combat companions, it is normal to see them having birds for pets and companions, especially popular are cranes, as a symbol of prosperity and longevity, and sparrows, as a symbol of simplicity and joy.
