Character Specializations
what defines us

Through out this wide world, thousands upon thousands of shinobi begin and continue their training every single day. While they might all unthinkingly train within the same world, few shinobi train in the same manner. While these minor differences would be impossible to list, the staff have attempted to implement a system to reflect this mass of possible variations.

As such we have implemented a specialization system. With this system we believe that you can make a shinobi who is as focused or well rounded as you like. Each choice comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. As such you should seriously consider what sort of character you would like to play and possibly what type of fighting style most fits your characters history and personality.

Below you will find the specialization choices you may currently pick from. Now, we may possibly add more choices later on, but only if we feel something needs to be divided or it becomes apparently clear that something new needs added.

Focusing on the choices we have now, you have ten choices to pick from. Many of these choices also have the additional sub-choices of perks they might grant if you have them as your primary or as your only specialization. Now, just because they only list perks for being a primary or a sole benefit should not discourage you from picking one as a secondary specialization.

By picking one as a secondary specialization you avoid a few drawbacks. Such drawbacks are limits on the rank of techniques you may choose from that particular technique tree at character creation as well as increased costs in the jutsu marketplace. I will now list the information of what happens when you do not list something as your primary or secondary.

Non-Specialized Skills

Max Technique Rank
If you want a technique that is neither from your primary or secondary specializations (Generalized Specialists Excluded) then you will only be able to start with techniques from your primary at your highest technique level, techniques from your secondary one below your highest technique level and from other skill trees two ranks below your maximum rank. This means that if you are a genin whose primary is taijutsu and secondary is genjutsu, that the genin could start with up to C rank taijutsu, D rank tai/gen and any technique that does not fall into those two trees will be unavailable to the genin except E Rank; E Rank being two ranks lower than a genin's maximum technique rank of C.

As an additional example, should a chuunin solely specialize in fuuinjutsu they would be unable to start with any technique that is not fuuinjutsu that is above C-Rank; this being two ranks under their maximum rank of A.

Lastly, if a jounin were to choose generalized (which automatically is a sole specialization) then all their skills would be restricted to techniques one level under their rank's maximum. While this means that the jounin would only be able to have A rank techniques at the strongest, they are able to gain many more jutsu in total. This gives them access to all technique trees at stronger levels. So while they would never be able to acquire a S rank technique, they could acquire A ranks of any technique tree.

Jutsu Purchases
Any technique that does not fall under your primary or secondary specialization, is therefore more difficult for your character to learn. To reflect this, any technique that falls under a differing technique tree will cost 10% more in the Jutsu Marketplace. Of course, any techniques that are listed as being required in order to purchase techniques from that particular tree (such as puppetry) will be unavailable for purchase as well.Individuals who do not specialize in medical ninjutsu may purchase up to C-rank medical ninjutsu techniques so long as they take Medical Training as one of their special abilities.

Ninjutsu [General]

The most diverse and plentiful of specialized techniques utilized by shinobi forces, Ninjutsu through the use of a shinobi's chakra is capable of producing effects that are capable of truly affecting the world. These can range from blasts of fire to creating perfect clones of oneself. They also include elements consisting of katon (fire), suiton (water), doton (earth), fuuton (wind) or raiton (lightning). Additionally, this also includes all elements that are composed by fusing two or more of these elements such a Mokuton (wood), Hyoton (Ice), etc. Being the largest of the categories of techniques, two sub-categories have been set aside from the main group.

  • Special Jounin follow Jounin element affinity rules

  • Receive an additional free max rank ninjutsu

Ninjutsu [Puppetry]

While puppetry is commonly associated with Sunagakure no Sato and the village is in fact its birthplace, the technique has since spread (albeit on a small scale) to other villages. The art of puppetry takes a great deal of training and chakra control to use and as such must be taken as one's primary specialization in order to utilize any puppetry techniques. Furthermore, such characters must also follow the puppetry rules listed here.
-Able to Carry Poisons in Equipment without requiring an SA

  • Puppetry techniques cost 10% less

Sole Specialization
  • Receive Kugutsu no Jutsu free
  • Puppetry techniques cost 25% less
  • Receive an additional max rank puppetry technique

Ninjutsu [Medical]

This sub-category of ninjutsu encompasses any technique that focuses on repairing, damaging or manipulating the target's body through a extensive understanding of the human anatomy. While medical techniques were quite rare before and during the initial founding of the shinobi villages, as wars have raged on over the last century medical shinobi have become more and more important, but are still uncommon overall due to the amount of training and chakra control required. This must be taken as one's primary or secondary specialization in order to utilize any B-rank or above medical techniques.
-Able to Carry Poisons in Equipment without requiring an SA

Primary Specialization
  • Receive one free C rank medical jutsu
  • Medical ninjutsu purchases cost 10% less

Sole Specialization
  • One free C rank medical jutsu
  • Medical techniques cost 25% less

Genjutsu

Genjutsu or illusion techniques aim to manipulate the target's five senses in order to trick the target into believing something is or has happened, which has not. This can range from a psychological attacks to merely tricking the opponent so that they wander in circles. Because of the level of chakra control required to perform the techniques and the understanding of the human mind required, genjutsu is one of the lesser practiced shinobi arts. It can be on of the most powerful however.

Primary Specialization
  • Receive one free C rank genjutsu
  • Genjutsu purchases cost 10% less

Sole Specialization
  • Receive one free C Rank genjutsu
  • Genjutsu purchases cost 25% less
  • Receive one max rank genjutsu technique
  • Target(s)' ability to kai is bumped down by one rank.

Taijutsu

Taijutsu techniques involve any physical movements that do not incorporate weapons. This is often considered to be the second largest category of techniques that are developed by shinobi. It is because of taijutsu's trait of being simple to learn the basics of, that nearly every shinobi is taught the basics of punching, kicking and so forth while only those of true determination are capable of learning the more detailed and destructive techniques. It should be noted that Taijutsu specialization covers any weapons that focus solely on increasing the damage of punches, kicks and so on. An example of such a weapon would be a pair of brass knuckles.

Primary Specialization
  • Receive one free C Rank Taijutsu
  • Taijutsu purchases cost 10% less

Sole Specialization
  • Receive one free C Rank Taijutsu
  • Taijutsu purchases cost 25% less
  • Receive one max rank taijutsu technique

Fuuinjutsu

While seemingly not as popular as some other schools of shinobi abilities, many shinobi rely on fuuinjutsu without even realizing it. Scrolls, explosive notes and so forth all rely on fuuinjutsu to operate and while shinobi specializing in fuuinjutsu might be an uncommon occurrence, they are often very powerful in their own right.

Primary Specialization
  • Receive one free C rank fuuinjutsu
  • Fuuinjutsu purchases cost 10% less

Sole Specialization
  • Receive one free C rank fuuinjutsu
  • Fuuinjutsu purchases cost 25% less
  • Receive one max rank fuuinjutsu technique

Senjutsu

Out of all the types of shinobi techniques, Senjutsu or Sage Techniques are the rarest. Practiced only by the sages of the major shinobi villages and their apprentices, the techniques teach and utilize the power of natural energy alongside one's own chakra supply to create devastatingly power techniques. Unlike other specialization options, one can only take senjutsu as a secondary specialization.

Since sage techniques are essentially just regular techniques used in conjunction with natural chakra, this means that you'll be able to utilize sage techniques up to S rank if they would otherwise fall under your primary specialization, up to A rank if they fall outside that primary specialization, but you can only use them in sage mode or up to B rank if you can utilize them outside of sage mode.

[09/06/22] Note: Sage Mode, and thereby Senjutsu, requires an Enhanced Chakra Reserves SA. Characters do not necessarily have to start with an Enhanced Reserves SA, but they will need to claim one before they are able to attain Sage Mode.

Secondary Specialization
  • Access to Sage Mode
  • Given Summoning Technique for Free
  • May start with senjutsu techniques one below their highest usable rank so long as they can only use them while in sage mode.

Bukijutsu

Bukijutsu techniques walk side by side with taijutsu, the sole exception being that Bukijutsu focuses on the use of weapons rather than one's own body. This is another extremely common family of techniques, with the Samurai of the Iron Country being renown for their usage of kenjutsu which is a sub-group of Bukijutsu in general. As noted above, weapons focused on increasing the damage of punches and kicks will be treated as a taijutsu weapon. Where as any sort of weapon which acts as the main factor in damage such as swords, spears, trench knives and so on will all fall under Bukijutsu.

Primary Specialization
  • Receive one free C rank bukijutsu
  • Bukijutsu purchases (for your weapon(s)) cost 10% less

Sole Specialization
  • Receive one free C rank bukijutsu
  • Bukijutsu purchases (for your weapon(s)) cost 25% less
  • Receive one max rank bukijutsu technique (for your weapon(s)) free

Generalized

While many shinobi in the world decide on one or two paths to specialize in, for others this is simply not an option. Instead they bounce between nearly all the schools attempting to learn everything they can. While they certainly become a much more well rounded shinobi in they end, they also are unable to become masterful of any one style of techniques.

Sole Specialization
  • Jutsu rank restrictions drop by one [The highest rank jutsu a Jounin can start with is an A rank; the highest for a Sp. Jounin would be B rank; the highest for Chuunin's would be B rank, the highest for Adv. Genins would be C ranks, and the highest for Genins would be D ranks.]
  • As a generalist your allowed highest rank jutsu limit will be increased by three, IE; a chunnin generalist has 14 jutsu with up to 6 being B-rank.
  • The cost of jutsu for a generalist is base price, no discounts. Furthermore, generalists may not have any medical, puppetry or senjutsu as these require specializations.
  • You may not purchase techniques above that of an A-Rank. Generalist's are not allowed to purchase S-ranked jutsu.
