2nd Round Begins

Omori Akihiko

The woman eyed Akihiko again, hefting the Kumo chuunin's bag in her hands as she inspected its contents for the final time. This particular Kusagakure chuunin had been assigned to guiding Akihiko to his starting point in the labyrinth, as well as ensuring that he had changed into the provided uniform and turned in any unauthorized equipment. As per her instructions, she spoke minimally to the genin participant, only opening her mouth to relay commands and answer questions that pertained to information that Akihiko would have already been briefed on.

And now that they were standing before the entrance to the labyrinth, the chuunin seemed to ease up just a bit. The hard expression on her face softened as she handed the bag back to Akihiko, pointing to the top of the entrance where a simple electrical timer counted down the seconds until the Kumo genin would be allowed into the tunnels before them. She remained silent as the final minute passed, answering any more questions that Akihiko may have asked though most of the bases would have been covered already. When the timer finally hit zero, a soft 'ding' played from it, and the chuunin gently nudged Akihiko forward.

This was the last chance for the Kumo genin to back out, but if he chose to step forward he'd officially begin the 2nd round of the exams. The entrance to the labyrinth appeared to be a plain door, but once he stepped through a wall of earth would rise up from behind him, preventing him from exiting the way he came. The tunnel ahead of him started off more like a modern hallway, clean tiles and lightbulbs above. After only a few or so meters down, however, the hallway quickly transitioned into a more natural tunnel, with the walls, floors, and ceiling being made from dirt and stone, and the lighting coming to an abrupt stop. The question now was, what would Akihiko do?

Akihiko was not really asking questions of the chunin that had a stern face, but rather chattering her ears off about this or that as if he had a boundless amount of energy. What was he talking about? What he had for breakfast that morning, and several other things. Including his clan at home, the journey that it took to get here from Kumogakure, and all the other silly such things that an immature and quite hyper teenager would talk about. Mostly though he was running his mouth because he was distracting himself, he was a little nervous after all. Plus, it was kind of hard to feel comfortable in this weird uniform thing they had given him.. He had wished he was allowed to wear his normal clothes, but alas a uniform it was.

Once they reached the bottom, there was a timer, and not long after it dinged, and with his few belongings the boy was allowed to enter. Akihiko didn't back out, he didn't have the wherewithal to back out, he was convinced he would do just as well as he had done in the first round. And with a small smile, he would enter, digging through his bag immediately to grab one of the kunai he had been provided to hold it in a defensive reverse handed manner just in case whilst he slung the rest of the bag onto his back as comfortably as possible, tieing it so he didn't have to carry it in some awkward manner around his body.

That done he walked further in until the area became earthy. That and the light stopped very abruptly.

"Uhh..."

Aki verbalized awkwardly, trying to think even so much as looking back. They hadn't given them a flashlight or anything to see naturally in the dark with... So he decided to focus instead. All of his attention going to his Tennogan as he started to try and see in the darkness with the eyes. Of course, they were not a way that allowed him to see in the darkness, but he could see chakra with them, and perhaps somewhere in here there would be chakra structures, and if he could not see through them - like the walls - then he would know there were obstructions there.

This ability allows him to completely out-maneuver genin who have not trained in a similar manner to therefore match his twitch reactions, furthermore he is able to go toe-to-toe with genin who have not trained like he has, though a trained chunin will find themselves with an advantage over Akihiko.

Akihiko's bubbly and unreserved personality is not all for show, he seems to have a higher than average will to live, an abundant and generous life force. Capable of standing up in battle when a normal shinobi of his level would have been put down. Though, this is not to imply total immunity as much as he is capable of withstanding what others may not be mentally equipped to deal with, if healing or help does not come Akihiko can be taken out though it takes a greater amount of force. Additionally, Akihiko needs less rest after all battle or rigorous activity to fully recover and go again.

If Akihiko's vitality alone was not enough, he was also born with an unnatural amount of chakra. To fit his reckless personality, and fighting style he is able to spit out jutsu at an alarming rate without tiring out. Like the annoying brat that he is, he seems to go on and on seeming to be ready to take on the whole world if he so chooses.

Strange Circumstances

Akihiko's first instinct was a good one, immediately arming himself with a kunai before pressing onward. The darkness of the tunnel was oppressive but the young Omori had a strange way of somewhat circumventing it: his clan's dojutsu. The genin's immediate area was dotted with an assortment of small, chakra signatures. They were stuck into various locations in the walls, floor, and ceiling of the tunnels, most giving off a hue that indicated that they might be non-elemental or possibly fuuinjutsu techniques. Their placements were so sporadic and spread out, however, that using them as guides was probably going to be more a hinderance than a help however.

There was one notable chakra signature, however, positioned in a sort of diagonal direction away from Akihiko. The only issue, however, was that there didn't seem to be a clear path to it from where the genin was standing. It was a perfectly square shaped signature, potentially some sort of doton wall, though in order to get a better look at it without the use of the Tennogan, Akihiko would need to venture deeper into the darkness of the labyrinth. A darkness that held an unknown amount of corners and dangers. At the very least, however, Akihiko could be sure that there weren't any other genin within his dojutsu's sensing range.

Akihiko saw the dotted chakra spots all around. They were sporadic but gave him an idea the slightest idea of where a wall or a ceiling or even where bits of floor elsewhere could be. He didn't touch those bits of sporadic chakra, being slightly more adept at fuuinjutsu than the average individual he knew that they could very well explosive tags if he wasn't careful...Somewhere diagonal of him was also a big wall, definitely made up of chakra. Though the boy had no guess as to what it was, seeing as there was nothing else aside from the dots of chakra he figured that was his goal.

So, he proceeded forward. Moving with hope and a skip around the signatures he could see if they were placed on the floor and generally keeping a bit of a distance from the ones he could see stuck to the walls... Otherwise? He would find a regular wall, his palm placed firmly against it and he would use it as an immediate guide. Because if there was a turn, he would feel it at least on the right side. Otherwise, he hoped he could literally see some turns via the signatures. It was a hard situation to gauge, but this was his only choice at the moment.

At least he didn't see any full-bodied chakra signatures out there, which meant that he was certainly out of any danger in that regard.

As Aki followed the wall he remained vigilant in keeping his left hand or kunai hand up defensively if it was needed. His eyes were ready to seal any jutsu that came towards him, and furthermore - the most important bit - he was doing his best to make his way towards the wall to his diagonal, which was why he was keeping to the right.

Earthen Traps

The genin's dojutsu proved to be a valuable tool in navigating the labyrinth, immediately proving its worth when the genin seemed to step past some sort of invisible boundary. One of the chakra signatures he spotted would suddenly be activated, a pillar of earth a few inches wide shooting out from one wall before pummeling itself into the opposite side. Thankfully, due to his vigilance, Akihiko was left completely unfazed provided he hadn't dashed forward at the last moment. The force and sound alone would have alerted him to something happening, and his tennogan had helped him keep a healthy distance away from the trap.

Still being in the darkness, the genin continued maneuvering through the tunnels, using one hand to guide himself along the wall. After some amount of distance, the path would suddenly veer off towards the right, not quite directly towards the wall of chakra that Akihiko had identified, but still leading more towards it than going straight ahead would. The situation down this turn was identical to the initial tunnel, a scattering of chakra sources along it. Continuing down it would let the Kumo genin draw closer to the puzzling chakra wall, but if he pressed onwards he would soon gather some new information. Chakra signatures of other shinobi would enter his dojutsu's range, just on the outskirts for now, but growing with every step forward he took.

Akihiko's eyes would widen at the sudden movement and activation, he would flinch a bit in place, frozen to his spot. A bit frazzled momentarily before he would find the right wall again and continue moving along doing his best to keep himself vigilant against any other such traps that might activate. His heart now beating quite wildly, from the unexpected and unwanted surprise that he had received moments ago.

Either way, he kept on moving along quietly, his kunai at the ready... Mostly. Aside from earthen traps apparently, which he would just flinch at from the sound and seeing that something was about to happen due to the dojutsu warning him of suspicious things.

His hand touched emptiness at some point, and he noted that there was a way to turn right, and so he did and kept himself to the wall as before. It wasn't quite directly towards the big wall he identified some ways away, but it was getting closer than if he were to keep going straight, so he trusted the process and kept going.

Now as he moved, within his range came mottled spots of chakra that were not neutral but rather in different colors, and much bigger than the signatures he had been seeing in the maze.

Shinobi?

Akihiko grimaced, that probably meant he would have to fight. So, he would begin to try and dampen his steps along the way. It might make him move a little slower, but he didn't want to attract unwanted attention.

A Split in the Path

Akihiko wisely kept his guard up as he pressed onwards, successfully evading all the traps that he encountered along the way with his deliberate movements. Going forward, the young genin would be able to more distinctly notice the chakra signatures of the other shinobi in the labyrinth. They always remained at the edges of his detection range, perhaps 5 or 6 at a time, though it would be difficult to keep a tally on them as they frequently left and re-entered his dojutsu's sensing capabilities. From a few of the signatures, the genin would also be able to see additional, smaller signatures spouting out from them, implying not too subtly that they were using jutsu of some kind, though very rarely.

In any case, Akihiko pressed onwards while keeping his movements quieter, eventually reaching a split in the path ahead. The tunnel suddenly veered off in both directions, with the left leading directly towards the strange chakra wall he had sensed earlier, and with the right leading him in the complete opposite direction. In both directions, the traps didn't appear to decrease in density, though now that he was closer Akihiko would be able to tell that beyond the chakra wall there definitely seemed to be fewer chakra traps.

On and on he went until suddenly his hand seemed to slip around a smooth curve and just then he noticed that there were two directions to go in if only because of the Tennogan. The traps in both directions seemed to be about the same, but one direction was distinctly making the wall he was trying to move towards, closer than the other. His instinct unsurprisingly was to go for the most obvious thing in the situation and that was to move on forward to the left to the chakra wall, where he was now picking up on signatures beyond it, though there were far fewer...

There were also shinobi in the area, they would come into view and then disappear all muddled in their different chakra nature colors. At least it provided a pretty color show in all the darkness.

So, Aki went to the left, his steps as quiet as before. He remained well guarded, concerned that he could be met with an obstacle at any moment and he wasn't really wanting to expend unnecessary energy so early on, so he pushed forward each step tentative and decently measure. This was an unusual acting Akihiko, he was... Focused on the task at hand, something that very rarely managed to happen. But, he was a little nervous after all.

A Strange Wall

Akihiko continued in the same manner as before, cautiously towards the wall he had spotted shortly after entering the labyrinth. Nothing unexpected occured on the way to it, and it wasn't too long before the Kumogakure genin actually reached it. It didn't seem to be a trap in and of itself, and if Akihiko chose to touch the wall to get a better 'view' of it, he'd find it completely, unnaturally smooth, a stark contrast to the more rustic and earthy walls up until this point. It was mostly cool to the touch, and the use of the Tennogan would only confirm what the genin had seen much earlier: the wall was practically made of chakra.

Getting closer also revealed that there were more walls like the one in front of him deeper in the maze, dozens of them even. They all seemed to be just as static as this one, though if he paid particular attention he'd be able to spot one or two off in the distance suddenly sliding to the side.

From here Akihiko had a number of options, each one seeming just as viable at this junction. He could choose to double back and explore the other way, moving further away from the chakra signatures of the other shinobi but leaving him to remain in the darkness. The other obvious option was to poke and prod at this strange wall, perhaps see if it held any sort of deeper meaning for this round of the exams. The last, least obvious option was to simply wait and see what happened. Aside from the traps, there had been no real danger present so far, and remaining in place seemed like a relatively safe strategy.

Akihiko was quite excited to finally have gotten to the wall, his heart rate had gone up in that excitement though he managed to not let out any sort of noise. Which, had been quite hard to suppress. Either way, Aki would reach out to the wall and find that it was surprisingly smooth. And very nice and cool to the touch, he would lean against it wiping some sweat off of his forehead from all the concentrating he had been doing on the cool surface before he started to think...

What could he do? He could see walls just like this one further away, but they were sliding. Unlike this one, this one seemed static. But, that had to mean it opened at some point, right?

Akihiko didn't know if he had to reach a certain point in this darkness or if he just had to survive the amount of time allotted... Deciding that it was at least worth being patient and maybe to relax a little bit, Akihiko would sit down on the ground being careful to not sit on anything that he could potentially trip up. He would lean against the smooth wall, if it slid open he would simply fall back! A perfect plan... In the meantime, he would rest his legs and silently inspect the area. Perhaps he could find something strange that could perhaps trip the wall to open if it did not do so on its own.

Light in the Darkness

In the end, Akihiko chose the passive approach, taking some time to rest while leaning up against the peculiar wall. As he did so the wall would actually move ever so slightly, but no more than a millimeter at most, almost certainly going under the genin's radar unless he was especially aware.

Provided he continued his chosen strategy, Akihiko would find it difficult to really investigate the immediate area. It was still pitch black around him, but as time passed he'd find that it was truly safe. If he chose to wait that long, an hour would even pass uneventfully, with the wall he was leaning against suddenly sliding open at the end of that hour.

Beyond it would be a sight for sore eyes, if not a bit blinding at first. Affixed loosely to the wall was a flickering torch, burning slowly but steadily and casting its orange glow on the tunnels of the labyrinth. The light helped the Kumo genin see just how natural the tunnels actually were, clods of earth and stone completely bare with a few sections looking as if though they could collapse at the slightest touch. There weren't any more torches further down the path, but even from here Akihiko would be able to see that the tunnel split into two directions ahead.

Sure enough, Akihiko decided to rest. His weight fully against the door. At first he was weary of the area, but soon enough he would doze off a bit. A light sleep to get some rest in. But, that was all disturbed a little under an hour into his sleep. Suddenly he was tumbling backwards. He woke up quickly, gasping and pointing his grasped kunai at the darkness. With his eyes re-opened and focused though, he noticed that the door had opened, there was a horrible bright light, and there was no one there... When his heart had calmed, he would notice the light. It was awful at first, in truth, but as his eyes adjusted he felt it was a welcome sight after all that time in the darkness...

Then, he got the brilliant idea - tossing caution truly to the wind - to grab the torch on the wall. The boy would jiggle it at first, to see if it would come up into his hands easily. If it did not, he would yank on it hard, and if that did not work, well... Akihiko would leap to hang off of the torch trying to apply the entirety of his body weight down against the torch to try and yank it off with no regard for whether or not he was capable of doing so.

"Come onnnnn~!" He loudly whispered.

Akihiko's bubbly and unreserved personality is not all for show, he seems to have a higher than average will to live, an abundant and generous life force. Capable of standing up in battle when a normal shinobi of his level would have been put down. Though, this is not to imply total immunity as much as he is capable of withstanding what others may not be mentally equipped to deal with, if healing or help does not come Akihiko can be taken out though it takes a greater amount of force. Additionally, Akihiko needs less rest after all battle or rigorous activity to fully recover and go again.

If Akihiko's vitality alone was not enough, he was also born with an unnatural amount of chakra. To fit his reckless personality, and fighting style he is able to spit out jutsu at an alarming rate without tiring out. Like the annoying brat that he is, he seems to go on and on seeming to be ready to take on the whole world if he so chooses.

After resting for some time, the door behind Akihiko suddenly opened, causing the Kumo genin to tumble into the now lit passage. Thankfully, no new dangers were present to take advantage of his vulnerable state, at least immediately.

Like a moth drawn to a flame, the genin's first instinct was to reach up to try and pry the torch from the wall which would result in... absolutely nothing spectacular at all! The torch came freely from its socket, flickering brightly and warmly in his hand wherever he decided to carry it. Now that he had a source of light, the genin was free to explore the split in the tunnel ahead, or perhaps he wanted to backtrack and see if there was anything interesting the trap infested area he had just exited?

If the genin instead chose to utilize his dojutsu again, he'd find nothing in its passive 20 meter radius, though expanding it to its full 100 meter radius would reveal there were at least 2 shinobi signatures in his vicinity. It was difficult to tell if they were in tunnels that connected to his location, but it was clear that they were on the move. They didn't seem to be moving too quickly, and there was one signature for each direction of the split.

Instead of backtracking - and having to potentially wait another hour for the door to open - Akihiko decided to press ahead with his newfound torch. It would be a good weapon too, he could whack people with it if he wanted and the fire could set people on fire. Or at least their clothes. Not that he wanted to hurt anyone necessarily but if they tried to hurt him, then he would likely have to hurt them in return! That was just the name of the game, or so he had heard anyway...

With his dojutsu passively working he would look beyond the light, there was nothing in sight since he did not want to expand his chakra too much. He had to save it as much as possible, so he did not focus too hard. Instead, he would come to the fork in the tunnel ponder on it briefly and then whisper to himself.

"The right... Cause it's right." It was a silly mantra or concept, but Aki had been traveling right before so now he turned to the right and moved forward with a new found confidence, convinced that the torch would help him find his way if he was just diligent in noticing any unique patterns in the wall, floor or ceiling.

Tennogan | Dojutsu | Kekkei Genkai
Gifted with his clans dojutsu, even among clan members Akihiko can be seen as quite skilled with it, capable of utilizing both states of the dojutsu - sealing techniques within the four orbs that reside in his eyes, and seeing chakra from great distances (20m passively | 100m actively). At his level he is capable of sealing jutsu that top out at 'medium' in chakra usage, anything above this puts a high strain on him as he continues to work minimizing the strain his eyes put on his body and chakra supply.

Evasive Maneuvers
Knowing ones strengths and weaknesses is important and as a boy who barely dabbles with the physical arts - as far as specializations go - he has taken a focus to knowing how to get out of harms way when in close quarters with those that might try to close the distance on him. He's more of a long range fighter and he keeps it that way. This ability allows him to completely out-maneuver genin who have not trained in a similar manner to therefore match his twitch reactions, furthermore he is able to go toe-to-toe with genin who have not trained like he has, though a trained chunin will find themselves with an advantage over Akihiko.

Choosing the rightward path, Akihiko bravely pressed onwards in the the trial. The light on the torch remained strong as he held it in hand, its orange glow giving him plenty of light to investigate the tunnel walls, though there wasn't anything too interesting to look at. Unlike before, however, this tunnel was quite wiggly, winding back and forth while overall heading in one direction. It meant that Akihiko wouldn't ever be able to see more than a few meters ahead of him, though his Tennogan no doubt helped nullify that somewhat. After a few minutes of walking the Kumo genin might find that his dojutsu was an unnecessary precaution in this particular case.

One of the shinobi chakra signatures he saw would suddenly begin moving at a rapid pace, first along the horizon before seeming to align with him ahead, at which point the signature began rapidly growing closer, winding through the tunnels with astonishing speed. As it grew closer, Akihiko would even be able to hear the approaching pounding footsteps. Yet another set of choices were before the Kumo genin. Would he retreat the way he came? Would he remain in place and set an ambush or trap? Would he charge forward and meet the chakra signature?
