"Can you believe these jerks?" Miroru announced as she marched along the road towards Minato Jichitai, sticking to the sides to avoid carts- and the leavings of the animals drawing the carts. "Who gets it into their head that "I'm gonna wake up today and just rob woodcutters"?! It's so freaking rude! Just go cut some wood!" Miroru grumbled to Azarea as they made their way along.

That wasn't exactly the whole of it- the well-processed, sturdy oak grown and refined in Konoha was legendary for ship's hulls, and intercepting shipments was big money. It wasn't bad business sense- at least, not once Konoha's Chief Fox Friend and the Kumogakure Bugmeistress were on the scene!

"Still, it's nice to get out and about, you know? I've been spending a ton of time in town, uh... studying. And training too!" Off to either side of the road, tiny, stealthy foxes shot through the undergrowth, keeping a close eye on the shinobi and the fine wood shipment they were guarding as they ambled along. "I've developed some pretty amazing techniques, getting ready for all this. Wonder if everyone's working as hard as we are to get ready?"

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

Got Wood?

Azarea kept pace with Miroru as the two of them headed deeper into the forest in search of these so called thieves that had been raiding the local lumberjacks for wood. Kumo's interest in this mission quite plain given that same wood was used in making their whiskey and alcohol barrels for distilling and with these local raids their distillers were coming up short on barrels right as the latest batches were due to be kegged.

"Honestly I'm more curious how they're sneaking that much wood out without it being seen. It's not exactly easy to transport. Which means whoever we're up against has to have either help or some way of moving it without detection." Azarea mused with a shake of her head. Which could mean an opponent with shinobi skills. At Miroru's comments though she can't help, but smile.

"I've also been working hard. Maybe not as much as you, but I hope to make a good showing in the exams. I've been perfecting a few of my Sensei's old jutsu in hopes that if he's watching in the audience maybe he'll pick me out of the crowd and come pester me to buy him dinner." She jokes, but the longing in her voice was genuine. She missed Riku even if she knew the man was happier out roaming the world. As the woman extended her senses channeling chakra to the forefront of her mind as she works on practicing her technique. The forest lighting up with chakra to her senses.

OH.” Miroru frowned, taking in that detail and musing over what it could mean. "So we could be working with anything from someone using like. A big Invisibility Cloak to hide the lumber as something else during moving- like a pile of grain or something- all the way to government officials helping them. I think it’d have to be mid-level- high level functionaries would be responsible for the overall impacts to the region.” She wondered it all aloud as they traveled. "As for jutsus- any you can tell me about? I don’t wanna breach student-teacher confidentiality, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about the sort of techniques you find interesting and usef-”

"We hear voices. Faint. Still distant. North-north-east. Some faint metallic sounds. Deep. Like logging chains.”

The voice came from one of the Bakenokawa that had scurried back to them without her noticing. She bent and scooped her up, settling her on her shoulder as she unsung her staff. "Are you-"

"Moving in as we speak for more information. It should be safe to advance quite some ways from this position if you keep quiet."

She nodded to Azarea. "Anything to discuss before we gotta be hush hush?"

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

"You'll have to be surprised just like everyone else Miroru-chan, but I have picked up some new weapons," Azarea assured her reaching out to pat the girl on the head and as she does so she lets the sleeve of her jacket drop to reveal metal plates layered on her arms with odd holes drilled into them. Melody arms. As she gives the girl a little wink before pausing as a cluster of signatures brush against her senses their chakra taunt and wary and a few among them...

"Ah your foxes see them too. I think some of them may have shinobi training. Their chakra is too advanced to just be civilian thugs." She warns dropping her voice. "Let's see if we can get an ambush on them. If they're clustered together it'll be easier to take them out with the same routine we used on that last group of bandits." Azarea explains flashing Miroru a grin as she signals the girl to pass her a water scroll.

"I circle around to the other side of the group and toss? You shock?" She suggests with a grin. Hopefully none of their enemies where chakra sensors as it was all Azarea could do to ignore the burning blaze of Miroru's signature when standing next to the girl was like standing next to a burning sun. One just really shouldn't stare at it.

"New toys?" Miroru inquired, intrigued and excited! But no weapons cane- just welcome headpats, and a glimpse of some sort of Fuuton weapon. Or- musical? "Wait, is that like an arm flute?"

Things cut short quickly, though, as the foxes reported targets afield, and Azarea identified some as Shinobi trained. Miroru grumbled, muttering, "I don't get it. Why take amazing talents like chakra control and jutsu training and just… go be a jerk in the mountains somewhere? Who DOES that." She sighed, though, falling into a stealthier stance as she nodded, handing over a big water scroll to Azarea, as well as a smaller one. "Mmh! Sounds like a plan. Don’t fix what’s not broke. I can trigger the shock from a distance, now, and start work on the ones still standing. That sound workable?”

After refining the plan- or confirming it perfectly decent!- Miroru broke forward and crept closer, the two Bakenokawa informing her when the nearer one could start to hear her, giving her warning to slow to a stop and get into position before she became evident. She stuck her staff into the dirt beside her and took a few steadying breaths. Once she heard the cursing from the abrupt flood of water… it’d be go time.

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

First Contact

"You're close, but no cigar. I'll give you a demonstration when we get into combat though." Azarea quipped with an evil grin eager to show off her new toys as she took the scrolls with a playful bow. Best to keep things simple. No plan ever survived first contact with the enemy though Miroru's words gave her pause. It was odd that so many of the thugs had larger charka reserves. Usually there'd only be one. Maybe two in a group like this, but she was detecting at least five. Still so long as their skills weren't beyond the academy level they'd be easy enough to deal with so long as the two of them caught them by surprise.

"See you on the flip side then Miroru." She assured her little Kohai as taking to the trees and sticking to the shadows Azarea began to circle around to the other side of the clearing prepping the scrolls for deployment and ready to lend Miroru long range support as the pair separated and got their first good look at what they were dealing with... and it was not quite what either had expected. Nor where the two unexpected.

Nothing after all ever goes entirely according to plan.

As the two kunoichi moved through the dense forest, locking on the five chakra signatures of the group of thugs they had previously identified, they seemed to be rathe ordinary, meaning that things were going to be quite straightforward, as the signatures were moving at a regular pace on their general direction, but still too far for them to physically see them. However, when they got close enough to where their clashing spot was supposed to be, they would hear a loud whistle coming from the centre of their enemies' direction, and as soon as they heard it, the place would be suddenly obfuscated by a very thick fog, making it quite difficult for them to see anything in the area, but sensory abilities were not affected by the technique, which was at least something the duo had going on for them.

With the thugs gone from sight, all they could hear was the sound of their footsteps, giving an indication that they might be surrounding them, but other than that, no other sound was being made, so even if they were not actual full-fledged shinobi, the group was showing they were dangerous enough for the two girls to have to take them serious.

Developed as a genjutsu version of the hidden mist technique it allows for the same effects as the ninjutsu version with much less chakra utilized. The target seeing a thick fog or mist rising up to obscure their vision and even their hearing. Less experienced users of genjutsu usually leave it at this, but more experienced practitioners will add in the proper smells and even the damp feel of the fog to the target(s) senses. The technique is triggered by the user saying the techniques name; although they'll often render a handseal or two as well to make the target(s) believe it is actually a ninjutsu.

"Deal," Miroru whispered, winking bravely before they split up, saluting in confidence. It'd work just as clean as last time. She was sure of it! With Azarea-chan along, how could it not?

Fog rose from the ground in a thick wave, rapid and abrupt. Miroru blinked, muttered under her breath. "I gotta learn how to see through fog and stuff." She started to reach for her lantern, before pausing. "Waidaminnit. This is the same thing as-" She brightened, recalling that Azarea-chan had used this very same technique to hide her movements during their first mission together! A lightning quick handseal later, and chakra pulsed through her own system, pushing out the foreign...

...

Miroru blinked as the mist perservered, biting her lip a little. She was pretty sure she hadn't done it wrong. So...

So this guy was GOOD.

Biting at her lower lip, Miroru whispered to the little fox with her, "You should take your selves home, okay? I don't want you getting hurt out here." The Bakenokawa nodded- and poofed out of the human realm.

Taking a deep breath, Miroru flashed a couple hand seals for a little insurance- a form-fitting Barrier Armor, useful to patch holes in a swift defense. That established, she engaged the Act of Tree Climbing and hopped into the trees, on a circling path she hoped would get her close enough to see the bandits without running straight over their heads!

Ambush

It didn't take much for Azarea to recognize one of her own signature techniques as her Kagura's Minds Eye senses the genjutsu falling over her like a blanket. She'd spun the Continuous Fog Technique more then once though... the whistle was strange. Typically the genjutsu was triggered by the sound of it's name. Had their opponents figured out a way to twist the trigger? These thoughts giving the woman pause where she perched in the tree. Her fingers forming the handseal for kai as she flared her chakra and...

The Fog remained.

A spike of real fear lancing through the genin as she realized whoever they were dealing with must be a specialist though this would explain how the thugs had been stealing and sneaking the wood out of the forest. With a genjutsu expert at their disposal even if the thug could do nothing else the world was practically their oyster. Thankfully where her eyes failed her chakra senses remained, but with the group spreading out as if to encircle them it...

"MIRORU IT'S AN AMBUSH!!!" Azarea roared out the warning hoping the younger girl heard her in time as the Kumo nin flared her chakra spinning the False Traveling technique around her as she formed the seal hoping that even if she couldn't see them her opponents could see her and would be fooled.

This, in turn, could allow for the user to escape or to launch a surprise attack.

The confidence of the group grew substantially once they saw the desperate expression on the two kunoichi they were facing, as their genjutsu release technique failed to free them from the grasp of their illusory attack, at least immediately so. Azarea, as response, tried a genjutsu of her own, and was only partially successful; she did manage to capture one of the thugs, but the others were more careful. It was clear, at this point, that the group they were facing was not composed by amateurs, and they had been making this route their main source of profit, they were keen on making sure that would be staying that way. Or at least that was the logical conclusion to their tenacity, and demonstrated skills.

Suddenly, the fog would begin to fade for Miroru alone, and the girl would see the image of Azarea in front of her, a short sword in hand, and a hand seal. If Miroru looked at her, even for just a moment, she would see the red-haired smirking with cruelty, before running towards her, sword ready to chop of her head. Now, what was going on? Well... That was hard to tell. But for all intents and purposes, Azarea seemed to have betrayed the young Uchiha girl. So what would she do?

"MIRORU IT'S AN AMBUSH!!!"



Miroru twisted as the fog cleared, towards the only person around- Azarea. With a... sword? That- was... hadn't they just heard Azarea screaming a warning?

Still- Miroru had one thing going for her.

She was a very experienced bullshitter.

"So. It's come to this, has it? I should have expected this from a CLOUD ninja." Miroru declared as she leapt away from Azareish, slinging her staff onto her back as she drew a small scroll and released the water inside, drenching the ground as she dropped just beyond the puddle. Her hands flew through four symbols- Ram-Tiger-Snake-Cross. Her chakra flared twice- first at the end of the first three, and again on the last, creating a set of two insubstantial clones wielding their staffs on either side of a single shadow clone clearly physically standing in the large puddle, "hidden" between the two obviously fake clones and dead center in the puddle...

The three wielded their staffs in perfect unison towards the charging girl as Miroru herself leapt against a tree trunk, aiming to appear like a decoy shadow clone circling away from the original and its copies, all pointedly looking away from the "Decoy." while Miroru watched for footsteps in the puddle, ready to drop a Gian and thunderbolt the puddle on the first sign of someone actually standing in it, well aware that against a Genjutsu specialist that she shouldn't trust her eyes- as well as the fact Azarea had promised to show off what her arm gear did. Since when did she use a sword?!

Never, that's when!

To Whom It May Concern

While Azarea might not be able to see the thugs she could still sense them as she maintained her genjutsu hoping she'd managed to snare at least one of them. Thus far they'd remained evenly grouped around her and Miroru so she couldn't be certain which of the lost was the genjutsu expert as gritting her teeth the woman beelined towards the target closest to her in the fog stopping just short as she mimiced confusion right as she brought her arm around funneling chakra through the metal bracers strapped to her forearms and fired off a shot of tearing sound directly at the thug closest to her. While senbon, kunai, and other techniques required fine aim thankfully sounds waves were more 'to whom it may concern' as the noise like roaring gale hurtled towards her target.

Staying put however would only end in tragedy as holding her breath Azarea formed the seals for hiding like a mole and dropped into the earth like a stone. Praying she could reach Miroru in time to form up some sort of defense between the two of them as she distantly heard some sort of yelling about 'expecting this from a Cloud Shinobi?' As her brow furrowed in confusion.

DESCRIPTION:
By building up enough sound with their gauntlets, the user can use their chakra to release and redirect the waves in mid-air to their intended target. By damaging the victim's inner ear, the victim is rendered off-balance and nauseous. While sending the sound-waves through a solid object whether it be person or inanimate, this technique can be used to damage, and in the case of objects of weaker material such as wood and the like, completely destroy it. As an added note the jutsu can also be directed through water weight with similar effect. Therefore the greater fat index an opponent has, the more they are affected by this.

Description

It should be noted that the user can not travel while underground, they only may be in the hollowed out area made by the technique.

As Miroru's attack had been targeted at the attacking Azarea, while the original one leaped against a tree trunk, she would see as Azarea seemingly fell victim to the attacks, and after the attacks supposedly took care of her, another Azarea would appear behind Miroru, with a kunai in her hand, aiming to stab the girl right on her back; having used the genjutsu to divert the attention, the enemy seized an opportunity to reduce the number of kunoichi they had to face, and since Miroru was smaller and younger, they deemed her the easier target. Together with the Azarea-looking person, two of the thugs also came with their blades, aiming to cut the girl on each shoulder. She was being surrounded by the thugs.

Azarea's attack at the man she had trapped in her genjutsu was rather effective and the man was knocked out unconscious by the sheer pressure of the near point-blank attack. By sheer luck, as the other thug lounged forward to slice her with the sword, she used her Earth Release right on time to get out of the way, safely retreating to the safety of the underground. Still, the situation was not looking good for the two kunoichi. They would need to step up their game if they wanted to make it out of this situation, and still emerge successful on their mission.

"Hmhmhm... as expected of Tricky MikKYAGH!" The sneak attack got her entirely by surprise- but preparation spared her the worst of it. The blow to her back slammed against the Kekkai armor she'd created- which, of course, splintered into nothingness in an instant, but it turned a likely lethal backstab into a painful but not entirely debilitating shallow gouge. Rage, panic, anger, fear, defiance shot through her system in roaring rivers, the Kyuubi's power lying just in reach.

She could use it.

She could take it for her own.

But she could handle this.

She was sure of it!

Miroru blurred as chakra flooded her legs thanks to the Thunder Step technique, moving with absolute lightning speed to grab the offending backstabber and hurl him at one of the approaching duo, utilizing a Taijutsu technique to catapult him into the other opponent without hesitation. The other, she spun away from as he attacked, another Tai maneuver- Quick Rotation. As she spun away, she launched away from the trio in a leaping dive, twisting and executing a single handseal to activate Gian again before literally spitting a bolt of lightning back towards her original position, splitting it into a hail of thunderbolts tearing directly through that location in laser-straight lines! As she landed and skidded, she executed Short Circuit's hand sign, filling her hands with electricity and lettting her momentum drag her away from them and closer to where she'd heard Azarea a moment ago!

She didn't have time to check for knockouts or casualties- the moment she started to turn, the earth crumbled and erupted with yet another Azarea clone! Another mistake! Miroru had seen those arm flute things, and heard them work earlier- there was no doubt in her mind that they knew nothing about Azarea, who clearly used Fuuton to power those wind cannons, and not Doton! Miroru lunged, driving both hands forward in a double palm strike empowered by unfiltered Raiton, dumped straight into the cowardly sneak's belly before he could even try to use Azarea's face to attack her again!

Betrayal

They needed to pull back. This was too well planned and while Azarea had the advantage of her sensory abilities without her Miroru was fighting blind. Their usual tactic of her hanging back and providing ranged support to the generalist while Miroru took care of the close quarters wouldn't work if neither could see well what they were aiming for. Meaning they needed to pull back to some sort of bottle neck. Anything to return the field advantage to them as funneling doton chakra around her Azarea followed the blazing ball of light that was Miroru's chakra signature the woman clawing her way up to the surface as she appeared beside her partner.

"Miroru we need to~" She begins to say only to see her Kohai turn lightning sparking along her arms as the Uchiha lunged forward. To close for Azarea to hope to dodge. Too close to flee.

Too close.

Too close.

Too close...

Shock and betrayal flickers in Azarea's scarlet eyes as Miroru's fists impact with her stomach piercing through her chest plate as they connect the circuit through her flesh. Raiton searing through Azarea's veins as her jaw locked so hard that her fangs clipped the tip of her tongue filling her mouth with the electrified taste of iron as a throat tearing scream of agony erupts from between the woman's teeth.

"Why...?" Azarea rasps out through the blood and pain vision rapidly fading to black as she slumps over her last thoughts before the darkness of unconsciousness claimed her how she could have possibly mistaken her kohai's signature for another's. Because Miroru... the real Miroru... she would never...

The Kumo nin slumps to the ground with a dull thump her breath a shallow wheezing gasp, the tell tale fingers of electrical burns creeping out above the collar of her jumpsuit, her sides where Miroru's fists had connected with her flesh smoking, chestplate a smoldering sparking, twisted hunk of metal as the woman lay still. Crimson hair pooled around her head like a puddle of blood.
