With everyone being moved into the cave with their proctors they’d find themselves eventually all coming out the other side entering into a deep pit with stone walls and an open fixture in the ceiling beaming moonlight down directly upon them a large open space allowing them to see the starry mountain sky, with each team being assigned their own room unable to see the others. However there was an opening to be able to hear everyone else. "Hey…can everybody hear me, how do you like the mines we dug, I'm Iwane Iwamoto and I'll be your proctor for this portion of the exams!” a voice would sound over a loudspeaker, he sounded rather friendly almost a bit too friendly.

He’d appear inside of a small booth at the top of the cavern that was far away but not so much he couldn't be seen. He'd look down at everyone with a wave, with a vantage point allowing him to see all 6 teams in the facility. He had dark red hair and thin brown eyes wore a hard hat and spoke with an energetic voice. "Anyway welcome to the second round of the Chunin exams, for this trail you’ll be solving a Puzzle, but it shouldn’t be too hard considering you already know a part of the answer.” he would say with a smile.

""You have 1 hour to solve the Puzzle, and make it through the doors in front of you, but they won’t open until you solve the puzzle completely and you can only go to the one that corresponds to you.” Before them were a set of stones that were stacked in a pile, beside them were a set of scales with numbers scribed onto them, the numbers however were different for everyone. For this team the numbers were 008, 37, 061, 531, and 021 "In order to move on, you’ll need to apply weight to the scales the numbers will tell you how much weight will need to be applied and you'll need to use the stones in order to solve the puzzle."

Looking around however other than the scales placed on the ground, and the pile of stones there wasn't much other information around the area. The pile of stones however if one would notice weren't all the same size they looked like large round rocks with flat tops like a wheel of cheese, each one weighed a different amount, but they wouldn't know how much they weighed until they picked them up or moved them. There were 5 stones in total one for each tile, each one was about the size of a full grown man.

"Good luck you guys, the clock is ticking I can see all 6 of you from up here so don't try escaping or else, once you've figured out the puzzle I'll let you know when you're free to leave, if anyone gets hurt please use the intercom! It's every man for themselves so do your best!” Along the wall in each room was a red buzzer that looked like an intercom pushing the red button would give them access to talk to Iwane and also allowed Iwane to talk directly to them.

Congratulations on making it to round 2! For this phase of the exams you’ll have 12 rotations to solve the puzzle, Your current position in the rankings is based on your placing in the last round in the round. So if you didn’t do so hot now's your chance to improve your scores.

From this point forward your scores are based upon your commitment to the characters IC behavior as well as your overall contributions in the exam and all other rounds going forward! Do your best good luck and have fun!

You will have 5 days to post [120 Hours]

Hotarubi was tired. He had clocked in at 22, which was great in his view but at what cost? He had barely had more than an hours sleep and the rest of the time was laid flat on the floor, so that he could get any form of rest.

That being said, he didn't have enough chakra to actively fight, and only had his naturally superior form to work with.

He looked up, hands on his hips as he stared up at the booth, not even seeing the person behind the voice from their distance and in stead was zoning out so that he could actively listen. When it concluded, the near-man turned.

He openly sighed at it being a puzzle. That was good. They had to add weight to scales on a floor. That was easy right? He thought instantly to use his own weight to his advantage, he could have gotten rid of some excess weight.

"Let me be clear. I can defeat all 4 of you by myself. If you try me, I will kill you. Painfully." His tone indicated a great deal of irritatuon; and a likely reflection among the rest of them. Hotarubi would only offer this direct advice once, "We have an hour and it ain't long enough to fight over." Hotarubi was dragging his feet as he began to walk to a nice central position to stare at all of the stones, not perturbed with receiving a preemptive strike for some reason.

They all knew part of the answer. That was cryptic. Was it to do with a part of their run? Their position? How did it relate to the stones?

Hotarubi, in truth, was less intelligent and didn't answer to meta concepts like academic thoughts having only done enough to pass the genin exams, and some further math if he had a pen and paper.

"We should put them in weight order first. Figure out what's what, then what goes where." They were all tired though so it was easier said than done...

Yuie Junichi Avatar

Junichi and Sadako had made it through, by some miracle. He really felt like it was mostly her doing, her plans helping them to go through difficult areas without being spotted. He was exhausted, bone-deep tired. Because they'd taken a while to arrive, they didn't get all that much time to recover. Soreness hadn't set in yet, but Junichi could tell that he would be feeling the 17 hours of constant motion in the morning. Even now, he'd used enough chakra that he was tired and wasn't sure how much more he'd be able to use.

Luckily, it seemed the next challenge was more of a logic puzzle. Hopefully he could conserve his chakra here and solve it with just his head, along with the group of the team. He listened to Iwane describe the puzzle and wished he'd had a notepad to write everything down on. Instead, he would have to focus on imagining a list in his mind. Alright, here was what they knew:

Everyone would already know part of the answer, which meant it would need to be based on easily available information? Or maybe information they'd seen on the way in? There were five stones, one for each scale, which corresponded to each door, and each person could only go through a door that corresponded to them.

One of their teammates opened with a... threat? Not a threat, because he didn't want to fight, but it was certainly some kind of intimidation.

"Why would we fight him in the first place?" He murmured, more asking Sadako than directing it back at Hotarubi. "It's every man for themself, but we'll do better working together, right?" Or would they get points knocked off for relying on each other too much? If he was riding Sadako's coattails the whole time, would he get kicked out?

Nervous, now (though he would've been nervous anyways), he approached the scales, kneeling down to read the weight. Junichi dealt with scales sometimes while working at the family business, helping make soaps and stuff. Getting the ratio of oils right was important. Still, he wouldn't consider himself any kind of scale expert, and these weights didn't come with measures. Just strange numbers. 008... But there was no decimal, so it wasn't a fraction of a weight. Why were the zeros at the front, then?

"We don't know the weight order of the stones," Junichi pointed out. "We can arrange by size to take a guess, but one could- could be more dense than the other. I think we need to figure out what the weights on these scales mean first. They're written really weirdly."

"Shut the fuck up," Sadako said, her mouth pinched into a sour moue. She folded her arms across her chest and glared up at the proctor where he sat comfortably in his booth, dumbass little hard hat and all.

Tsuchi no Kuni was Clown Country, and being forced to experience the locale for herself was only piling on the evidence that this was correct.

"You too," she said to the bloviating Taki genin; and then she added, "Pink bitch," just for good measure. Then, backing up Junichi's mumbled comment to her: "If you don't want a fight then don't fucking start one."

On any other day Sadako might have just started swinging, unable to resist the siren's song of a challenge to her ability to wreck someone's day. Today, though, she had just come out of the other side of a grueling seventeen hour marathon; they'd had some time to rest before being shepherded into round two, sure, but Sadako had been so wired from the high of hard-earned victory that she hadn't been able to catch more than a catnap. Most of the downtime she and Junichi had earned she'd whittled away stretching, massaging her aching thighs and calves, drinking water. Thinking over the race they'd just finished.

She was doing just fine on chakra, all things considered. She'd used a couple of substitution techniques here and there, but otherwise it had just been a test of her physical endurance... but mostly because she hadn't yet mastered the techniques she *wanted* to use. It made her grit her teeth to think it, but Junichi had done way better than her--solid plans, fantastic use of ninjutsu, and he was able to keep pace with her.

Twenty-fourth place wasn't bad, but the more time she had to sit with her thoughts, the more her adrenaline rush subsided, and the more rancid her mood turned; and when her mood was this foul, beating the shit out of something or someone was usually her go-to solution. Problem was, she was also tired as hell. Sadako couldn't remember the last time she'd gone without the requisite seven point seven five hours of sleep she needed for peak physical performance.

Irritation and exhaustion formed a fog in her mind, and it was through this fog that Sadako took Junichi's suggestion and ran with it: she slid up next to him to look at the numbers as well, and frowned.

"Zero-zero-eight," she said out loud. "Zero-six-one, zero-two-one. What the hell kind of measurements are those?" She squinted at the stone cheese wheels, as if trying to willfully understand how much they weighed just by looking. "One of these things seriously weighs over five hundred pounds? Can any of you even lift that much?"

The *maximum* Sadako had *squatted* was something close to three-fifty. A 500 pound slab of Iwagakure's refuse would be beyond her capability, that was for damn sure.

She turned to Junichi, her head cocked. She had yet to acknowledge any of the other three genin in the room, and wasn't likely to change that.

"You're the nerd," she said to him. "What measurements use numbers like this, with zeroes at the front?"

Nari wanted a nap. Running through the Tsuchi no Kuni countryside for like, ever, all while maintaining a transformation jutsu was exhausting. Even if it was one of the most basic jutsu, seventeen hours on and off was pushing it. Even for his large chakra stores. But, unfortunately, the exam had other ideas and the moment the race was finished, they were ushered into some random pit and told to solve a puzzle.
[break][break]
Well, that in itself made Nari perk up a bit, bouncing on his toes in anticipation. He liked puzzles even more than races. Puzzles required you to be clever, and he did consider himself to be quite clever. He needed to be, to pull off the tricks and pranks he did back at home. So he was determined to make up for his crappy time in the race, for which he completely blamed the overly suspicious Iwa ninjas, by making sure his little group got through this game as quickly as possible.
[break][break]
Of course, that would mean that the group couldn’t be starting fights amongst one another right from the get go. "Hotarubi-kun, don't be mean," he drawled, rolling his eyes at the posturing, as he approached the scales. "It won’t help right now."
[break][break]
He wasn’t going to admonish the Ame two ninjas, they hadn’t started the insult contest. Instead, he started studying the writing on the scales. As Junichi had said, the numbers were written weird and it made Nari want to figure out why.
[break][break]
008, 37, 061, 531, and 021. The numbers all seemed like gibberish to him at first glance. He moved to the scale that had the number 531 on it, standing in front of it. And then he moved to stand behind it. He worried at his bottom lip and tilted his head, in thought.
[break][break]
Maybe the girl Ame, Sadako, was right and the numbers coincided with a stone weight, but that seemed too easy. Granted, he could be overthinking it and the most obvious solution could be the right one, but Nari being Nari meant that he’d immediately go for the more convoluted solution. He pulled out one of his apples that he had gotten during the race and bit into it, using the moment for a snack.
[break][break]
"I can't lift over five hundred pounds, but maybe that’s not what we’re looking for," he said around a mouthful of apple, looking up and back at the other four. "I might have an idea, but first, how much do all of you weigh?"

[break][break]

SAs Used:[break]
  • 『Zanjutsu』[break]
A young member of the scattered Araikettei Clan, Narihira has the ability to wield the strange and powerful Life Blades. He created his own Blade at a young age, under the tutelage of his mother, however, instead of making a sword as was common for the Clan members, Narihira designed his in the shape of a polearm.
    [break][break]
Giving it the name Hisuiyuri, he began learning to properly wield it from the moment he could hold it. Due to the connection the blade shares with him, should it ever be broken, both Narihora and the blade's soul would die, so he keeps it on his person at all times and cares for it meticulously.
  • 『Deep Chakra Pool』[break]
Narihira was lucky to be born with a deeper-than-average chakra pool. It allows him to fight and use jutsu for longer periods of time before he tires, compared to those with average-sized chakra pools. It's especially useful for him, due to the fact that his Life Blade is constantly absorbing chakra from him. But thanks to the depth of his stores, he never feels the strain from that drain unless he has depleted the polearm's stores in combat.
  • 『Life Blade Chakra』[break]
As all Life Blades, Hisuiyuri absorbs Nari's chakra continuously as he carries it around, stacking up a decent amount of chakra inside of itself equal to half its wielder's chakra pool. The chakra becomes Hisuiyuri's and cannot be accessed by anyone other than the spear, allowing it to have the ability to self-repair small nicks and scratches it may obtain during combat.
    [break][break]
It also allows Hisuiyuri to have its own built-in security in case someone other than Nari grabs onto it. Using its futon chakra, sharp blades of wind will strike at the stranger's hands and arms until they release the spear. These gouges are minor cuts but they do sting quite a bit if they manage to hit skin.
    [break][break]
When entering combat, Hisuiyuri will use its own stores to fuel its abilities until it runs out and then will begin taking from Narihira. Thanks to his deeper-than-average chakra pools the wielder and weapon are able to go for a decent length of time-fighting in that state, but eventually, it will cause Nari to lose consciousness if the spear takes too much chakra.
  • 『Flying Jades』[break]
Using its natural affinity to fūton, Hisuiyuri is able to detach the six small jade points that line the sides of its spearhead and allow them to hover. By sacrificing the shredding ability the points usually grant the spear, Narihira is able to fire them off either one-by-one or all at once towards his opponents.
    [break][break]
At it's current skill level, Hisuiyuri's points move at a speed slightly quicker than a regular thrown kunai, due to being powered by fūton chakra and Narihira's able to control the path the points take up to 30m.

A large audible sound could be heard after Iwane performed a seal that would cause the sides of one of the rooms to jut up blocking the birds escape as well as making a loud audible sound that everyone could hear.

"Sorry, but crafting summons or other forms of messenger animal to spy on the others counts as breaking the no escaping rule, it was put in place to prevent you from leaving your room for the purpose of leaving the exams as well as cheating, if this is done again everyone in the room that this took place in will fail, regardless of complicity.” Iwane would state over the intercom his voice still carrying that same friendly tone from before.

Katsuo would finally finish the race and would just barely scrape by with a pass. This was proving to be a lot more difficult than he was suspecting and he would be forced to start almost immediately with the next round of the exam. He got some rest but not that much, but since he mostly relied on the transformation jutsu only his reserves weren't in the worst state. Luckily he was more bukijutsu based anyways so hopefully he would have to use too much more chakra in this next task.[break][break]

The next task would be a puzzle involving stones and scales while working together with four other people. Katsuo took notice none of them were his brother or the other Kumo shinobi so he wondered what became of them, but pushed the thought behind him as he got energized to begin the next task. The tall pink-haired boy, was he even a kid? He practically threatened them all and Katsuo couldn't help and respond with, "Nice first impression guess your mother never taught you manners." He wouldn't stick around to hear the other boys' response though because he was quick to focus on the task at hand. [break][break]

He ran over to a rock and decided it would be fun to try and pick it up! He would try to pick up the rock he selected and would find he wouldn't be able to lift it on his own so he would shout to the group, "Anyone willing to help me get this on a scale?" He was hoping the other three would be a lot more cooperative than the bouldering pink giant would be.

Hotarubi seemed to resort to violence letting everyone know what ground it was that he stood on and that he wasn’t afraid of hurting others, good qualities to have but not conducive to the situation at hand. Junichi seemed to be a bit confused but it was very good for each of them to work together in this particular portion of the exams. Sadako mulled over the meaning of the numbers, uncertain trying to figure out what they meant barking orders at the one she called the nerd in Junichi.

As this kept going on, Fukase chided Hotarubi for his rudeness and continue to think asking the others how much they weighed to see if that may be a method that could be used to solve the puzzle. However Katsuo choosing to forgo Fukase's advise and asked for aid in moving one of the rocks, attempting to try and get the 600 lbs stone off of the ground.

If he didn’t have the strength to be able to move the large structure he’d have a hard time getting it over towards one of the others but with several others there surely someone would help right? But they'd best hurry the clock was ticking and they needed to make sure that they came up with a plan and fast they’ve already wasted 5 minutes of time.

Sadako almost picked a fight, and Junichi was glad when she turned her attention to him instead, even if she was as rude about it as anything else. Knowing she had confidence in his knowledge in this area would be nice if he didn't have to immediately disappoint her.

"That's the thing, there aren't any measurements that are written like this," he said.

Narihira, that boy Junichi had trained with before the exams had officially begun, spoke up, asking what everyone's weight was.

"Uhm... I weigh 73 lbs," Junichi answered. He was light for his height, not quite having started developing the bulk of age. He was not completely certain how it was related. One of the weights on the scales was 37, but without any other reference for how much other people weighed, there wasn't exactly many data points to compare to, so that just seemed like a coincidence to him.

While waiting on the others to answer, he stood up to get closer to Katsuo, trying to help him move the stone. Even with Junichi's physical training, it was far heavier than anything he'd tried to lift before, and without more help he certainly wasn't much use to helping Katsuo. He grunted and grimaced, looking at the others to see if anyone else would volunteer to assist - hopefully someone who could move or manipulate something so heavy more readily?

"Yup." He responded to the blonde. Yes: it made sense, obviously - but he was simply putting the threat out there. So when Sadako chose that moment to throw the gauntlet back, he stepped one step forward. Hotarubi rolled his eyes at Narihara. Things had changed since when he was in the academy. The Yamakira craved standing, and now he was a Genin - he didn't answer to the boy.

"Big talk standing behind the kid while cussing me out." Hotarubi crossed his arms, trying to put on a show - if she wanted to fight, she would get a fight. He did not want to fight at all, he was far too tired: but looks could've been deceiving, and looks were hopefully, all he needed. Luckily for her sake, her jumbled mumble was not heard by him, though his eyes squinted as he had definitely saw some movement on her face, but wasn't sure what.

Everybody had different ideas, whether he was being coached on morality, Hotarubi thought his plan was solid until it was penned that there might've been an academic reason behind the puzzle. The penny dropped for him when Narihara asked about his weight. He opened his mouth to respond but they'd started to run already. "Coward." His volume was flat, but most of them who needed to hear it would.

They had their own ideas about what to do, so when Narihara thought to ask people their weight, it ... made sense.

Hotarubi tutted loudly, audibly. This round was designed against him specifically. It did explain why they'd taken his weight at the start of the exam, though - maybe it was a sum? He sighed a second time, but gave it away. "800...." It made sense. It made sense. He wanted to win. It made sense... "pounds." His face was absolutely stony - so if he got some looks his way, and he probably did: his blank stare and folded arms would have given them the answer that he was telling the truth - provided he had no reason to lie, right? He knew the number so specifically because this was his level of control currently. Unlike the others who had themselves weighed and may have been slightly different: his was precise. He was precise.

"People can't shed weight so it might be a combination or sum of rock plus person. I reckon." But he could. While he was busy stroking his own ego, they were also doing their own deductions in their head.

Maybe Nari should have explained his theory a little more, but he didn’t think his vagueness warranted being ignored completely. The genin pouted when the Kumo shinobi didn’t even give him a glance of acknowledgement. Rude.
[break][break]
But he immediately perked up when Junichi gave an answer to him, even if the younger boy didn’t seem to get what Nari had been implying, immediately moving on to try and help the rude Kumo try and lift one of the rocks. Nari sagged again, slapping a palm to his face.
[break][break]
And then Hotarubi also gave him an answer which made him refocus and not worry about what the others were doing at the moment. "That’s so awesome," he said to Hotarubi, beaming in awe, because weighing eight hundred pounds and looking like the other Taki was very cool and impressive.
[break][break]
"And it proves my theory. Or part of it. Zero-zero-eight is eight-hundred backwards." He pointed to Hotarubi and then at the 008 scale.
[break][break]
"Three-seven is seventy-three backwards." He pointed at the 37 scale and at Junichi.
[break][break]
"I weigh a hundred-thirty-five pounds, which is five-three-one flipped." All lean muscle if he did say so himself. He needed that to be able to vault himself with his spear.
[break][break]
"And I’m assuming you two", he pointed between Sadako and Katsuo, "weigh either one-sixty and one-twenty, I don’t know which is which." He could guess, but his mother always told him to never guess a girl’s weight unless he wanted to die a painful death.
[break][break]
"So, I’m guessing that we either stand on the scales and we pass on, or we figure out which stone matches our weights and we get them on in our stead." He hopped onto the 531 scale and then off to see what would happen, if it would depressed and stay down or if it would pop back up when he got off.
[break][break]
Either way, he’d know what he’d need to do next.

Jutsu Used:[break]

KILLING YOUR IDOLS IS A CHORE

The proctor's voice interrupted their conversation to tell them some nonsense about summoning--whatever that was. Sadako rolled her eyes heavily and bellowed: "I said shut the fuck up!"; then, muttered to herself: "Annoying-ass... can't fuckin' think..."

Junichi didn't have an answer for her, but the skinny Taki kid did... kind of. He started in on this theory about everyone's weights being backwards on the scale, which made sense up until a certain point. Junichi was roughly the size of one of her quads (which made watching him try to help lift the stone the year's best comedy act), and one-thirty-five and one-twenty tracked for the Taki and Kumo twinks. But then the logic stopped.

"I'm one-sixty," Sadako drawled, rolling her shoulders and not-so-subtly flexing her arms. "But your theory doesn't work, kid. There's no way in hell this--" she jabbed a thumb at Hotarubi, "--lyin' ass motherfucker is eight hundred." Her lip curled into a sneer, Sadako gave Hotarubi a once-over. He was lean, not a bad amount of muscle, but he didn't stack up to her.

(She could have--probably should have--left it there. But she was exhausted, no energy left to maintain a filter, the "if you don't have anything nice to say" mantra that sensei had drilled into her evaporated in the wake of stress, resentment, annoyance, a not-good-enough victory. She opened her mouth and all that came out was cruelty.)

"So are you just a liar or did you stuff your face before your weigh-in?" she said, a rhetorical question posed with mock-curiosity. "I bet you coulda put away all the candy in Kuwana, since you're such a fatass."

Katsuo would be joined by the blonde-haired Ame shinobi who would help him try and lift the boulder, but Katsuo knew even with their help it wouldn't budge. There was no way the two of them would be strong enough to lift a boulder on their own without the help of the rest of them so Katsuo would begin to pay attention to the rest of the group's conversations while also going to the scales and doing some investigating of his own. Katsuo wasn't the type to theorize, but would rather just go and do things as he wasn't the brightest of flash bombs. [break][break]

Still, the words of his temporary comrades would linger as he looked at the scales in confusion. Something something about their weight, but what would bring him back to reality is the talk of the pink-haired boy's weight. How did he weigh eight-hundred pounds? With his physique, Katsuo would have guessed maybe three hundred, but eight hundred just seemed ridiculous. Not being able to control his excitement he would run up to the giant pink-haired boy and ask, "Does that mean you could send a shockwave by simply jumping?" It probably wasn't possible so Katsuo didn't hold his breath but the idea of it made his eyes sparkle with curiosity.[break][break]

The main thinker of the group seemed to come up with the idea of them standing on the one that pertained to their weight. Katsuo wasn't sure what they meant though even though they did list everyone's weights except Katsuo's and the female of the group. Looking at the numbers on the scale based on his logic there were only two choices left and Katsuo felt there was no point in questioning someone who had an idea of what to do so he quickly made his way to the scale with the 021 numbers on it. If the boy's theory was correct it should belong to Katsuo so hopefully, the boy was right.

As the team members spoke amongst themselves, each one of them came to a similar conclusion of needing to step onto the scales in order to move forward, Junichi, Fukase and Katsuo jumped on each of their respective scales in doing so it would cause the seals around the weight section to glow blue and create a pattern that merged towards the center of the 5 doors within the room, however without the other two cooperating that being Sadako and Hotarubi the seals would be incomplete.

Iwane would make note of their incompetence from within his booth. "Why are they squabbling their on the same team, and from allied nations, pretty disappointing that’s going to cost them if they don’t shape up.” he’d say to himself. Clearly those two couldn’t get along and it was affecting their teams cohesion in addition he grimace a tad when being told to shut the fuck up from the girl who’s insult could be heard across the exam field.

A few moments after their squabble however a broadcast would be sent out over the airwaves from Iwane. "Team C has passed the first phase of the exams.” and with that he would return to his duties keeping a sharp on the remaining teams that were left, the pressure was on and if they didn’t work together accordingly they were doomed to fail.

Hotarubi and Sadako continued to be at each other's throats, which made Junichi anxious. He didn't want them to get in a fight. They were supposed to be working together, and them doing this instead of talking was wasting a lot of time! He found the idea of speaking up to the two of them a little intimidating, but someone had to do it! He had to be responsible. It was like keeping Kenichi on track while they were studying. From his place on the scale, Junichi took a deep breath -

And the announcement came that another group had already finished the first part of the exam! Which meant there were other parts, and they needed to hurry, or they'd really be left behind! That steeled his resolve.

"Can you both cut it out and just focus on the task at hand?" Junichi chided, giving a stern glare (though given his age it looked more like a pout than anything else?) "We've all made it this far, so we should be better than this, right? If we don't want to lose, we need to work together, so I'm expecting better from you both! Especially you, Sadako!"

He stepped off his scale for now, since that wasn't going to be the end of the solution. "We have to match the rocks to our weights on the scales... Because if we stand on them and it opens the door, we wouldn't be able to go through, since we'd have to stay on the scale," he decided. "So let's figure out what rocks go where." He picked one of the smaller looking rocks and tried to move it to his scale to test out.
