There was a wooded area nearby the Red Keep, though it was quite scant as the keep itself was near the sea making it a very vulnerable place to try and invade by anybody's standards. But all the higher ranking shinobi were stationed in this forest, with the job to keep silent and as still as possible until the genin would arrive with their orders of what their next steps would be.

It was generally known that they would be invading, but the details were not yet shared with the group.

There were three teams of chunin and special jounin, stationed a little further ahead of their superior officers - the jounin and elite jounin - with the intention of being the eyes for the higher ranking teams in case they needed to act while the genin had not yet arrived. Though acting would most certainly also spell doom for the genin who were rushing to their destination.

Unsurprisingly there were enemy patrols to keep track of with any sense available to the shinobi, though they walked in a very particular pattern so if timed correctly they would never have to come across them. But it still took a great deal of care...

Some shinobi might find themselves perched up in trees, others blending with the environment with all the training they had received. It would just depend, and they would certainly have to since there was also a few watch tower lookouts but a particularly apt one at the top of the Red Keep.

Ultimately though, right now would be a good time to prepare for battle for the waiting shinobi teams, and any that needed to do something to prepare should do it now lest they be caught in the midst of battle without the necessary tools ready for battle.

[Kuronmeru Keiji]

     Keiji breathed in the crisp air, hand resting on the gnarled knob of a tree. Good night for it, he thought. Something about the dark brought out the best in him.

     He'd already prepared as much as he wanted to: not at all. There was little on his person that he wouldn't have with him in the village, save for the necessary communication equipment for the mission.

     It wasn't really so much a matter of 'challenging himself' as many seemed to do, but something unconscious in his psyche. Probably something of that perennial pride his clan possessed.

     The only jutsu he'd cast beforehand was the cloak of invisibility to blend into the tree and a Kuronmeru technique to enhance his eyesight, which he'd used to scout ahead on the way here and was now using to observe the pattern of patrols and sneak glances at the keep.

     All seemed clear. The tree he had picked was out of the way of patrols and his position was hidden from the primary watchtower. Keiji let it wear off.

     A yawn almost overcame his restraint. The waiting part was always his least favorite, at least when there wasn't any suspense. He wanted the night to get started in earnest already.

     One could only hope it'd be bloody.

A DEMON HAS PURPOSE

There is only one path left to take.

The invasion was about to kick off, but the orders were clear. Wait for the Genin to make their move before engaging. It was simple, if a little frustrating. They needed the backup, Kasumi was tactical enough to know that much. This wasn't like the Island Recon mission, no... this was far bigger and every advantage they could take would be needed.

Still, the Demon of the Mist hardly had much to do in the way of preparing. She didn't want to use the mist jutsu- no, that would draw far too much attention. Instead she used the hiding in water technique to hide herself in a puddle of water.

She had never worked with her assigned partner before, but he was a Jounin so she had little choice but to trust him. She'd seen the power of Jounin before and it was hard to doubt them. He didn't seem to require much set up either.

For now, Kasumi settled on just being ready for any patrols that might spot them. Hidden as they were, the chances were never zero, after all. When this thing really went down she was sure that there would be more than enough action to go around- and she was more than happy to wait to indulge herself.

The duo as they prepared would be met with an elder from the Shouki clan arriving on the scene - as a council member it was likely that the group knew of him, but perhaps not. Either way, he was definitely someone important enough to give a command and so he did -

"Hello, I am Shouki Kumori's clone here to assist you. The orders have arrived, we must attack the Red Keep now. We must capture it, but not damage it. Any escaping or fleeing enemies must be dealt with, there is a heavily guarded individual to keep an eye out for and he is notably too high of rank to be taken on by yourselves, but to care to slow him down if possible in the scenario that you can identify such an individual. Prevent escape, but beware."

The two would be met with the challenge now of pressing forward as commanded and to take on what was set before them. Directly ahead the path was not super clear with the troop of five guards making their rounds nearby, and the guards that stood at the Red Keep's actual door, a direct approach would have Keiji and Kasumi seen undoubtedly. Though the assault was not necessarily meant to be stealthy, the option was there. The two had to decide what to do, and do it to bring glory to their village.

     Keiji regarded the clone of his superior with a blank expression, observing from above. Finally, he thought. Fishing out the tanto hidden in the fold of his kimono, he unsheathed it and watched the moonlight glint off the edge. It's gone too long unused.

     They had their orders. Keiji peered out over the distance at the group of 5 guards who were patrolling. Could sneak around, he mused while looking down at Kasumi in her puddle. He shrugged. She could handle herself just fine in a close quarters fight.

     "I don't know about you," he called down to her. "but I'm eager to whet my blade. Do try not to fall behind." With a few well-enunciated handsigns, he used his clan's blood control to enhance his muscles and eyesight and reflexes, in a way that - specifically - brought his aptitude in kenjutsu to a similar level as Kasumi's.

     With immense acceleration, he shot out of the tree branch and onto the field below. Leaves floated down around Kasumi as the tree reverberated. Keeping low to the ground, he rushed forward towards the group of five and performed a slide that brought him behind the one on the furthest right side of the formation. Keiji let out a viscously fast slash, aiming to sever the man's tendons on the back of both of his knees.

A DEMON HAS PURPOSE

There is only one path left to take.

Waiting could be torture for Kasumi, but as she hid in the water she remembered back to hunting the legendary white deer. Patience was the only way to catch the creature, and the memory soothed her just a bit with her patience. That said, when the clone of Shouki Kumori arrived to tell them to attack the Demon was fast to mobilize. Her eyes would scan for the high value target quickly, not wanting him to slip by them as they fought the small dry. She had a plan for that, though.

"I'm eager... to make this a successful mission. Whetting my blade is just a side perk." She would tell Keiji, smirking a bit. The man seemed aleight with a sword, but Kasumi wasn't one to give out too many compliments about it. Instead, her demon cloak roared to life. A flare of chakra stretching out about ten meters to sense any life that might have been hiding around them.

"Keep your eyes open for the high value target, too! We can't let him get away."

She would start twirling the sword above her head, running up with her partner to engage the patrol. Whoever went to engage him first would be met with Kasumi's large sword, coming with a crushing overhead attack- hoping to end their life in one blow.

DESCRIPTION:

A simple technique, where the user spins their weapon above their head. Once the momentum is going, it is nearly effortless to maintain. At first glance, this may seem pointless, but it actually makes a threat range of one meter around the user. If an enemy steps in, the weapon can attack them without any wind up, much faster than a regular attack can. In addition, if the user does any other ribbon style technique out of this stance then it completely removes the telegraphing and the attack launches slightly faster, and harder to read.

This stance lasts until the user either does an attack or ends the stance themselves.

The user of this jutsu sends a flare of their demonic chakra out, stretching 10 meters of harmless energy that reveals the surrounding area in a sort of demonic sixth sense. This jutsu makes detecting any danger or life forms in that range and reacting to them an easy task.

The detection gives the direction of where the attack is coming from, but not the type of attack. It will also reveal living beings around her, but not who they are exactly.

The clone would disperse himself after relaying the message and as the two briefly discussed their plan, something happened in front of them in the clearing.

In the time that it took the center team duo to deliberate and move forward, another duo had come from the side. Arriving silently and unceremoniously, disturbing the patrol. The patrol turned and someone within it would perform an attack, cutting off Keiji's and Kasumi's attempts at any kind of stealthy approach or a modicum of an attempt to catch them by surprise. The enemies were now fully aware of what was happening, and they had alerted the entire for with a shout.

"An attack! Forest patrol!"

Indeed now Keiji and Kasumi had two options, to try and join forces with Daichi and Kimihiro - which might prove difficult since they had already created their own plan - or to try and take on the guards at the door whose defenses were on high now that they had heard of the alert. Though their third option would be to try and get out of the way of those fire birds that were rapidly moving towards them.

There would be no catching anyone off guard now, and there would be no telling what the enemy would be preparing overhead. There were few options, but they would have to try and move ahead nonetheless. There would be no freezing in this state of action...

The birds are then used as projectiles, fired all at once, with a range of twenty meters, which they can cover in five seconds. They can cause serious burns, and disfigurement alone. But together can easily take down a group of shinobi as they will ignite any flammable objects, such as clothes.

The patrol of five have noticed Kimihiro and Daichi approaching and created a grouping that allows them to immediately avoid Keiji and Kasumi's onslaught; one who seems to be the leader has taken charge already by creating a rather dangerous fire technique that puts Keiji and Kasumi in the line of fire in their approach.

     Keiji skidded to a halt as the group entered high alert and turned his direction. He glared at Team 1's members who had tipped them off. Fucking amateurs, he thought, as he spat on the ground. He resolved not to let his chakra use go to complete waste though.

     Stupid enough to alert them by crunching leaves? I'll leave them to you then, puppy. Running off to the side, he skirted a wide circle around the patrol and cut across the field towards the main gate. The anemic fire birds wouldn't be able to keep up with his speed, or reach him once he'd exited their range. He left the choice of whether to follow him or come to the aid of the other team up to Kasumi's discretion. Keiji didn't care so much, as long as he wasn't dragged down.

     The guards saw him coming, of course, but he was prepared to defend himself with clan techniques if it came to it - which it very well might not given his amped melee ability at the moment. Keiji rushed up to the waiting enemies, feinted the first and then attempted to drive his tanto into his back with a wide swing, clear of a counterattack.

[Kasumi Momochi]

A DEMON HAS PURPOSE

There is only one path left to take.

Thanks to her Demon Hunter jutsu, Kasumi was able to sense the incoming ambush and attack just a hair faster. She moved without thinking, making one hand seal and spitting out a mouthful of water at the ground to create a wall of water for the fire birds to run into. The wall nullified medium strength fire jutsu, causing the birds to harmlessly flicker out. On instinct, Kasumi would counterattack with her own weapon. Using the steam created by the fire jutsu hitting her water as a cover, she would throw her sword towards the trees.

Despite the steam, the blade would be right on target thanks to her demon hunter jutsu. Aimed at center mass of the man who cast the jutsu in the first place.

They may think they were doing the ambushing, but Kasumi planned on turning that against them. If Daichi and his partner were in those trees, then she hoped her own attack towards the enemy would not only damage them, but create a bigger opening for the other team to attack.

”Be careful, Keiji! I’ll back you up in a second!” In her mind, it was smarter to wipe out the closer enemies first- then use a numbers advantage on the further ones… but she wasn’t in charge of the special jounin, and he hadn’t goven her an order to follow. So she trusted him to manage on his own.

The impact does more damage the closer the target. At 5 meters, it can punch through steel. 10 meters and above, stone. After the impact is made, the user can pull the weapon back to their hand.

Keiji ran well out of the way in a wide arc from the chaos of the attack that was the patrol of five - though he probably would feel the heat and shockwave from the concussive force of the explosive tags that Daichi set off. But he fortunately closed in rather quick on the guards that were standing very much on the defense. They saw him, and they saw him clearly approaching. One guard was ready to defend immediately when Keiji feinted out of the way to attack the second.

It did not quite work to stab it into the man's back, but it worked to get him in his chest. He was a bit shocked but that moment where Keiji had feinted away from the second guard, meant that the second guard was very open to react when Keiji decided to stab his comrade.

The man had a large spear with a curving blade and so in that moment where everything stood still and Keiji was forced to stand still as well with the tanto driving itself into the second guards chest, the first guard swung the spear in such a way that it would get Keji in his back, deep, right into the musculature and keep him stuck in this position.

Kasumi reacted smartly and protected herself from the fire birds, though that did not mean that the others were safe. What Kasumi did not account for, was the explosion that was set off by Daichi that would let out that concussive blast, and so by the time her weapon was thrown in towards the center mass of the man who had cast the technique, the patrol was on the ground - though it was unknown yet if they were dead or not - and well out of the way of her swords throw... Though Kimihiro leaping *was* in the way and there was a chance that her sword would hit the Kaguya.

The patrol five are downed from a huge explosion and Kimihiro is in the way of Kasumi's sword throw. Please note, nobody is in trees. The patrol is in a clear field leading up to the Red Keep. The chunin/sp. jounin were set up on the edge of the forest ie there weren't trees beyond them, thus there is no cover or anything in the way of Kasumi's sword to actually stab Kimihiro

     Keiji's speed at the moment was too much for a regular guard to keep pace with - he was already very fast, and with his close combat ability amped so much? It wasn't close.

     He let go of the tanto that he'd just embedded in the man's chest, not stupid enough to leave his back exposed, then darted around behind him - leaving the second thrusting his spear into empty air, and if he'd put enough force into it - into the other guard.

     Now behind - or in front of, if he turned fast enough - the first man, he placed a kick to the center of his mass and attempted to send him into the direct path of the spear and skewer him. Keiji smirked, hoping the impalement would miss the vital organs - leave the moron alive long enough to suffer. He'd have to ensure some suitable suffering for the other as well.

     Keiji felt the rush of adrenaline. It'd been far too long since he'd risked his life, though he wouldn't call this much of a risk. He'd faced much more imposing enemies in the civil war. Still, open combat like this came so infrequently - and he was usually burdened down by chuunin. He didn't have to hide his viciousness now.

[Kasumi Momochi]

A DEMON HAS PURPOSE

There is only one path left to take.

Kasumi's plan to attack the guards with team one seemed to fall through quickly. An explosive tag she couldn't see detonating and knocking the enemies away- but more frighteningly, her sword towards her own ally. She grit her teeth in frustration, grabbing the ribbon suddenly to stop it's path towards her ally. It shook, losing stability in the air and crashing into the ground roughly.

Better the ground than her own ally, though, so with another rough tug she yanked it back to herself. She had two options now, it seemed. Assist Keiji- who was over skilled but out numbered- or continue trying to attack the new group and risk getting in the way of whatever plans they had set up again.

"Shit." She decided it'd be better to go to Keiji. At least what he was doing was simpler. Maybe she could find more success with it. She'd grab her sword, running towards the fray and at the least trying to draw some guards off her partner. With one last scan from her detection skill to make sure there weren't any more surprises, she would attack the spear man that Keiji was distracting from behind. A large swipe of her sword, intended to decapitate the man.

The guard seemed capable enough to stop the spear from entering his ally, stopping it at its horizontal thrust immediately when Keiji stopped and spun the spear around to put out in front of him, the spear was able to take on the kick towards his center mass the sturdy wall of the Keep kept him from moving back too far especially with the lack of potential to actually flying into. Irrelevant though now as he glanced up and saw shadows move, it was a brief glance as the arrows started to fly. They covered the entire battlefield, a whisper across the field heading straight for the chunin and Kimihiro out in the clearing and some directly pointed towards Keiji.

The guard took that moment to jump up onto the Keep's wall to start running upwards quickly using tree walking. Keiji on the other hand would unlikely be able to chase without being taken by a few arrows in vital spots in the process, so he would find a way to avoid the arrows almost immediately while his opponent ran off.

In the same breath, Kasumi would find her approach negated from the patrol of five. Not negated in the sense that she was no longer allowed to run, but rather that she would find it impossible with the arrows raining down upon her threatening to impale and kill her.

The guard manages to block Keiji's kick and before anything else can be done - and before Kasumi can approach the guard / cross the clearing - a downpour of arrows come from the Keep, leaving everyone involved vulnerable to being killed.

     When he saw the archers draw their bows, Keiji formed the handseal for the Body Flicker technique. He attempted to dart away lightning fast, back away from the walls and towards the treeline in a wide arc that steered him well clear of the patrol. He wouldn't stop till he was amongst the tree trunks and well out of range of the archer's barrage.

     Feeling safe for the moment, he took a second to look around himself and ensure there were no more enemies lying in wait. Keiji turned his attention to the other members of the team and the enemies they were fighting. He wondered how they would fare amidst the downpour of arrows.

     The others would have to find their way to the wall, or retreat back to his position, or find a way to block the arrows. He imagined they'd be fine. As for himself, he was quite sure none of the archers could reach him from this far away.

     Besides, he had the trees as cover if they could. He could rejoin the fight as needed, but he had no good way to defend himself from the arrows at such close proximity to the walls or with such little warning. Keiji watched in anticipation to see how those still in field afore him would do.
