The inn he occupied was actually a pivotal location for job seekers. It served as the medium for missions to be advertised and distributed to the public, by getting them posted on the mission board.

The inn also offered some additional services which the government didn’t, for instance, mission sorting and matchmaking, which greatly increased the efficiency and quality of life. As a result, such inns naturally became key gathering places for shinobi at all ages.

Having earlier pinned a poster outlining the mission details, Shō patiently awaited a suitable companion. The mission was actually given to him by his superior in Kamenoko Mamori, but they allowed him to bring outsiders along, as long as he actively participated in the undertaking. The task at hand involved testing a recently developed device capable of incapacitating ships. Essentially, it functioned as a remote and movable anchor.

However, to assess the device's effectiveness, he would need to seek out, infiltrate and test it on the pirate ships near the sea. The nearest sea would be the western shore, aside from being dangerous, it would also take at least a couple of days of travel. Hence, the mission was graded as a C-rank status.

Amaya’s relentless work ethic coupled with the crippling state idleness left him in, used his rare time off to find work for himself to keep busy. Typically, missions were assigned to him, but in quiet times he had to find more to keep his mind occupied. Amaya often overworked himself, a day off was more of a burden than a reprieve to him. His quest for work this morning led him to a local inn, a hub frequently visited by shinobi. At this early hour, it was usually only shinobi clustered around the bulletin board. But the rich aromas of teas and freshly cooked meals spoke of many regular patrons beginning their day.[break][break]



Navigating through the crowd, Amaya made his way to the bulletin board. He moved with a polite, unobtrusive grace, murmuring apologies as he weaned through the throng. Upon reaching the board, he scanned over an array of mundane, time-wasting tasks, the kind typically reserved for novice genin. It was frustrating for Amaya, who, despite his extended tenure as a genin, considered his skills far superior to those simplistic assignments.[break][break]



One posting, however, piqued his interest. It appeared to be a request for weapon testing. While he primarily focused on his wazikashi, Amaya had a comprehensive understanding of various weapons and the inner workings of devices. Setting down his hot tea, he stood up and waved at the shinobi who seemed to be surveying the area, likely identifying him as the mission poster.

Taking advantage of the short break, Shō began to brief the mission's goals and details, including the risks, as well as the rewards. "I must mention, the reward isn't particularly high compared to missions of equivalent rank, but we'll cover your travel and meal expenses."

Agreeing to Sho's suggestion, Amaya sat down for a cup of tea before their departure. He sipped the aromatic green tea in silence, providing succinct responses to any queries Sho posed, but never engaging deeply in the conversation. As they prepared for the journey, Sho mentioned that it would span several days, piquing Amaya's interest. The prospect of being at sea held a certain allure for him. Although he resided in a coastal region, his duties had seldom taken him sailing. The mission's goal to seek out and neutralize bandits added an edge of excitement to the venture. Contrary to popular beliefs, pirates didn't frequently launch attacks at Mizu no Kuni, and there was a logical reason for this restraint. Forcing victims into a dead end would eliminate any potential future gains, and it could also lead to a potential counter-attack since the victims had nothing to lose. Last but not least, they certainly didn't want to escalate the situation to the point where the Mizukage launched an attack against them.

To their surprise, a few pirate ships were already lurking in the vicinity, likely scouts testing the waters before relaying information back to their leaders to plan a raid. While dealing with pirates wasn't the primary focus of their mission, it became the main task at hand. As shinobi, they bore the responsibility of protecting their country.

Sho muttered in a low voice, before taking a few of the devices and rushed off from their small ship. With concentrated chakra on his feet, Sho made his way to the pirate ships through water walking. Even though the water surface was pretty unstable and rough due to the waves, Sho could easily hold his balance due to his advanced chakra control.

Whether Amaya wanted to tag along, or ambush another ship, Sho would leave the choice to him. He wasn't fond of the idea of following strict order, and believed in empowering. And even if Amaya made a mistake, it would still be a good experience and lesson for him. That was how he taught his sister, who just graduated to become a genin this year.

With that, he successfully infiltrated the first scouting pirate ship. Before he started to look for the best location to test the device, he casted an illusion to make the area he was standing became invisible.

The surface of the water, acting as solid ground under their feet, was shrouded in mist–concealing them further. Amaya sank to a stance that skimmed the water’s surface aiming to blend further into the veiling mist. In contrast, Sho moved with boldness, his pace quick and undeterred by the need for stealth. Recognizing the redundancy of following Sho, Amaya veered off towards a separate target. [break][break]

Amaya followed suit and his cautious crouch became a swift dash as he approached a pirate ship. Once reaching the hull, the banter of the pirates was more than audible to his keen ears. Their words were a mix of mundane conversation and jests. The pirates were oblivious to the danger lurking nearby, seemingly uninterested in keeping an eye out for shinobi. [break][break]

Silently, Amaya affixed one of the devices to the ship's hull as per Sho's instructions. The device's modest appearance belied its potential for destruction, piquing Amaya's curiosity about its capabilities. Though Sho had explained their function, witnessing their effect first-hand promised to be impressive. However, Amaya knew better than to stay put; his mission was to plant devices on multiple ships for a synchronized assault.[break][break]

If they managed to equip each ship with a device undetected, the resulting coordinated detonation would devastate the pirate fleet. This stealthy operation, if executed flawlessly, would obliterate the threat these ships posed in mere moments. Amaya buzzed with anticipation, it was different than wielding Hajimari, but the chaos that would ensue would be tantalizing.

The optimal strategy appeared to be activating the anchor simultaneously, paralysing both ships and creating chaos. And then they would seize the opportunity to infiltrate the main ship.

After securing the final anchor, Amaya dissolved into the encompassing mist, a veil that shrouded the fleet of ships. The thrill of battle began to simmer within him, Hajimari's seemed to sing in his mind, longing for a bloodletting. It seemed wasteful, he thought, to reserve all the destruction for the anchors.about to create.

Surveying the ship's hull, Amaya tuned into the sounds above—footsteps, voices, the life of the ship unaware of its looming fate. These vessels, havens for the lawless, floated in false security, cloaked by the sea and fog. Perhaps they would have been, if not for the two shinobi hunting them. Shō whispered as they both readied themselves. With swift agility, Shō ascended the ship with tree walking technique, but not before triggering the trap he had set on the preceding vessel.

A flick of the switch sent a uniquely shaped anchor hurtling through the wooden planks and into the sea. The anchor, powerful and swift, effortlessly pierced through the first ship, grinding it to an immediate halt. Water surged in, swiftly claiming the vessel as it gradually and helplessly descended into the depths.

Before the main pirate ship could grasp the situation, Shō leaped onto the deck, stunning the crew. "KUCHIYOSE NO JUTSU!" he shouted, slamming his palm onto the wooden plank. A burst of white smoke enveloped the area, revealing a black tiger with formidable claws and feet. The tiger roared, creating chaos in the centre field as pirates desperately swung their sabres at the agile beast.

Seizing the distraction, Shō took advantage of the pirates' focus on the beast, skillfully setting up another trap on the deck. If Amaya was present, Shō would take a moment to explain that it was in fact a visual genjutsu triggered when they saw his hand slam. "Yup, it was nothing but an illusion."

Acknowledging Sho's strategy with a nod, Amaya's focus shifted as he observed Sho positioning the final trap. Not all of the pirates were distracted by the illusory threat; some directed their aggression toward the newly emerged shinobi. As one pirate fell, another shifted focus towards them. Yet, by this act, Sho seemed to have finalized the trap. Amaya sought confirmation from Sho, his vigilance undivided between his ally and the threat. The remaining pirate, witnessing the swift downfall of his comrade, paused, his resolve faltering in the face of Amaya's quick kill.

Seeing Amaya effortlessly dispatch the poorly trained pirates and recognizing the need for more comprehensive information, Shō swiftly wove hand seals. A new shadow clone was materialised, stationed on the ship to gather data while the real Shō gracefully leaped back into the misty sea.

The illusory beast created by Shō executed a final leap, launching huge attacks that effectively distracted the pirates, creating a strategic opening for Amaya to execute her next move. The phantom creature then dissipated into nothingness as Shō was starting to run out of chakra. He wasn’t too worried about Amaya though. Judging from the fight a moment ago, she could handle them without Shō's help at all.

After ensuring Amaya was safe and away from the ship, Shō would detonate the final trap while his clone remained on the ship. Someone had to stay behind to collect the crucial data. After all, conversing with the deceased pirates wasn't an option, was it?

Disregarding the pirates still aboard, he leaped from the ship, his landing on the water's surface almost effortless as his chakra control prevented him from sinking. Witnessing the ship's rapid descent into the ocean's embrace, Amaya's stoic demeanor remained unshaken. The spectacle of destruction held a grim sort of allure. The power to decide fates, to render vessel so thoroughly defeated, so immediately. Yet, his face revealed none of these thoughts; he watched as the ship, now just debris and memories, settled into its watery grave.[break][break]



Amaya turned to Sho after the show of destruction had ended, burying the ship amongst the sea floor. It seemed there efforts here were complete, all the ships had create a graveyard beneath them.[break][break]


Turning to Sho, the destruction complete and their objective achieved, Amaya's gaze was as unreadable as ever. Beneath them, the sea hid their handiwork well.

As the ship was destroyed amidst the pirates' cries, the clone vanished, transferring its experiences and memories to the original Shō. In a mere second, the surge of memories was fully assimilated. "I see… So that's how it works." Shō murmured, deepening his understanding of the device.

While Shō had been away, the shadow clone diligently tested the device to its limits. The clone meticulously observed details such as the force exerted by the anchor, the optimal trap placement, activation duration, removal techniques, and more. "That is as far as I could go." were the clone's parting words before forcefully dispelling itself away from the impending doom.

Turning to Amaya with a smile, the real Shō commended his partner, "Good job. I believe we've gathered enough information. Shall we head home?" The debris of the shattered ship scattered all over the sea, but Shō was confident that the villagers and authorities would gladly clear away the remnants of the pirate ship they hated to their teeth in the coming morning.
