Near Kagura no Mura, the village renowned for its dreams and leisure, a string of explosions rocked the tranquillity, sending shockwaves of panic through the local populace. The serene atmosphere shattered, replaced by fear and uncertainty. Concerned whispers spread like wildfire, and the once-lively streets grew deserted as residents sought safety indoors.

In response to the escalating crisis, Shō found himself handpicked for a crucial mission. As a seasoned operative known for his resourcefulness and infiltration techniques, he was currently the best tokubetsu jōnin the village could assign to the mission. Determined to uncover the truth behind the explosions and restore peace to Kagura no Mura, Shō wasted no time in answering the call.

Arriving at the designated office, Shō focused intently on the briefing. Through intense discussions with his superiors, he more or less grasped the information regarding the case. However, it wasn’t much; that was precisely why Shō was required to investigate. With a simple nod of acknowledgment, he left the office in a hurry.

However, Shō recognised the enormity of the challenge ahead. Performing the mission alone might prove overwhelming for him. Hence, he made his way to the nearby inn to search for a potential partner. Aware that the success of their endeavour hinged on cooperation, Shō weighed his options carefully amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy inn.

When Ikana was brought forth to do this mission, it wasn't the first high ranked assignment she'd been assigned to. Though it was the first of this nature. Hearing of the bombings, she figured it could have been for any number of reasons. Extremist terrorism. Dissent. Perhaps a series of accidents. Whatever the case, as Ikana came to the office, taking step by step, the youthful Kunoichi was silent, before coming across him. A special jounin. More specifically, the elder brother of one of her students. Gure Sho. Upon entry, she bows politely. "Konichiwa."

Ikana was a ninja that some might say was in "popular demand". In the sense that she was a girl that was skilled at nearly everything she dedicated her mind to. With a vast myriad of Jutsu, and a growing experience that made her more valuable in these times. What more, she'd always put the mission first. Advanced to make her goals a reality. Frankly. She didn't know what to think of how her life had been in recent times. Things felt stagnant, not in the sense that she wasn't advancing in terms of power and skill. No. If anything, that was almost frightening now. Instead, what bothered her was her own isolation. It was easy to smile and nod her head, be polite.

Though Ikana could never say she was truly happy. Not after everything she'd been through. Not after the life she'd lived. Nor the life she envisioned in her future.

"We should investigate the site of the bombings. Sho-San. As well as determine their source and kind."

As Sho prepared for the mission ahead, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. It seemed that he wouldn't need to expend energy searching for a suitable partner; the organisation had already made the decision for him. His assigned companion was none other than Ikana, the kunoichi whom he had first encountered in a rather unconventional manner.

As Ikana greeted him with a polite bow, Shō returned the gesture with equal respect, his mind momentarily drifting back to their first encounter. Back then, she was his sister's private tutor, a fact that initially sparked his concern as a protective older brother. Worried about his sister's well-being, Shō had ventured out to meet this kunoichi entrusted with her education.

Yet, from the moment they crossed paths, he felt nothing but amazement. Ikana's expertise and dedication surpassed his initial expectations, leaving him impressed by her skill and demeanour. It only took a short spar for Shō to recognise her exceptional talent, a recognition echoed by her rapid ascent through the ranks to become a chuunin.

Coincidentally, they were put together as a team during the harrowing Mizukage's Red Keep campaign, a mission fraught with danger and uncertainty. Though they emerged victorious, the memories of the perilous battles was something he didn’t want to be reminded of, for they almost died during the mission.

With a nod of acknowledgment, Shō and Ikana bypassed the need for formalities. Having known each other before allowing them to skip pass the pointless and lengthy introduction. "Yes, that's exactly what I have in mind too." Shō replied, his tone firm and decisive. "Let's meet up in the port and depart with the trader when you're ready."

Shō suggested sea travel due to it being the most expedient option, he highlighted the significant time savings compared to travelling on foot. It wasn't some tiny improvement on efficiency, but it was about three to five times faster than the alternatives.

If he thought of her ascent as rapid, she saw it as little more than a snail's pace. For she had once upon a time stood to be Kirigakure's greatest asset, and now, she had lived a life of what she assumed was mediocrity. A sense of general uselessness despite the power she held to do incredible things. Her life's value was dependent on her work and the ability to complete it. Nor did she think the things she did held any major difference; at least, as far as she knew. Training others? How much difference did she make in people's lives really? People didn't know her. The real her.

Because she didn't know herself. Or denied it. When he suggested moving by ship, she would move with him with a simple nod of her head. "Hai. Since you're the higher rank. I'll have you take lead on this operation. Sho-San." Just like that? Before long? They were off along the boat, and she found herself mostly idling. Thinking of financial reports, or vaguely of her trainings and progress. However, she mostly stood alone and looked out towards the passing sea. Her eyes seemed to be a bit more glass like. Empty as she found herself never realizing. Never realizing she'd never bonded heavily or strongly interacted with Sho since their mission or his assessment.

As Shō observed Ikana's demeanour, he couldn't help but feel a little confused. Social interactions had never been his strong suit, and reading people's moods was a skill he had yet to master. However, he attributed Ikana's apparent tension to the gravity of their mission rather than any personal discomfort.

Stepping forward, he offered a reassuring pat on her shoulder before sharing a few words of encouragement. "Don't be too tense! You will do just fine." It wasn't mere flattery; he genuinely believed in Ikana's abilities, drawing from their past encounters in the Red Keep. Seriously, if it weren't for her, he might have died during the fight.

It wasn't an exaggeration to say she would be the future star of Kirigakure. Like his sister, they were destined to surpass him in skill someday. So, as their senior, he felt the responsibility to guide them and make sure they didn’t stray from the path.

When reminded of his status as a Tokubetsu Jōnin, Shō nodded with a forced smile. The promotion had brought more pressure that nobody would understand. He shook his head to bring himself back to the conversation. Despite his seniority, he preferred a more collaborative approach to leadership. He had always been an advocate for open communication and flexibility, believing that everyone on the team had valuable insights to contribute.

"Just voice out when you think you have a better idea. I am not one of those stubborn old guys." Shō remarked, his tone lighthearted yet sincere. It was a principle he had adopted throughout his entire life. In his eyes, leadership wasn't about asserting dominance but rather fostering an environment where everyone could thrive.

When he placed a hand on her shoulder, her shoulder tensed, but she slowly came to relax a moment or two after the foreign touch. He spoke towards her more as if she were a colleague than she was a subordinate, and it was there she came to gaze upon him and she nodded her head. "Hai." Taking the liberty to consider their course of action, she'd looked over the briefings and digested it, before setting a course of action. "We need to head to the sites of the bombings." She says, her eyes scanning the hall as they exited the office, her arms lightly folded behind her back.

"To discern the method, to figure why they chose the location they did, and then discern the motive. Why there?" She says, trying to break down the situation step by step. Before she lingers and looks upon Sho. "I'd advise we do it subtly, and understand that we do not wish for this person to realize they're being looked for." So, within a moment, she slides off her headband from her forehead and tucks it into her pocket. She takes off her vest and poofs it into a scroll, before she tucks that too into her pocket. Just like that? Miyamoto Ikana the ninja vanished. Instead, there was an entirely different figure.

A small, scrappy little girl took her place. "I'd want to figure out reasons on why someone would want to launch such an attack. Their ideals. Issues in this village. They obviously wanted to send some form of message, and now, the people are terrified. But I want to know more." That said, she looks upon Sho to see if they had any qualms with her way of thinking or actions thus far.

It seemed like the casual talk worked! After the briefing, Ikana voiced her idea of visiting the bombed sites and provided her reasoning to him. Shō responded with a happy nod, "Good idea, I like it. Guess we'll just go with this plan."

Having witnessed countless bloodshed, he came to dislike violence. But he was certainly good at working in the shadows. Infiltration was his forte; in fact, it was his specialised skill as a Tokubetsu Jōnin. Being able to merge with nature was almost like cheating when it came to spying.

But that wasn't exactly the main reason he liked the idea. It was the way Ikana approached the issue that piqued his interest. Her method mirrored his own approach to missions. Understanding the motive was always the first step he took. While it might sometimes drag down efficiency or complicate the mission, he disliked the idea of being a brainless war machine who only responded "yes" to superiors.

And sometimes he would uncover dirty secrets or the hardships of the perpetrators, which he could then try to resolve. As the saying goes, violence is never the answer. Only by addressing the root cause could one prevent the issue from recurring. Everyone knew history, but no one seemed to learn from it.

Frankly, for Ikana, she chose the method she did because she wanted to get into the mindset of her target, and from there, could try to piece together what she would do if she were in their shoes. However, as they eventually would find themselves headed forward, she'd found herself immersed in a little village that was immersed in rumors, fear, and trepidation. People worried about living their daily lives, and as they moved, Ikana found herself keeping her eyes open for suspicious figures and characters, but even more so for the nonassuming. This was for two reasons. One: A terrorist had a message they wanted people to know, and to an extent may wish to make themselves known. Two: A terrorist who wanted a message sent without their identity in jeapordy was one far more dangerous than the first.

Ikana kept her hands in her pockets, and as she moved, she'd eventually come towards the site of some devastation. And almost immediately, she'd drawn a couple deductions. Done near the center of the performing district, where the Kabuki dancers and various other performances were held. She'd found herself coming forward, and she'd studied the blasts thoroughly. From her observation, as she came to kneel down, her hands running down along the floor? Soot. It meant this was done by planted bombs or fireworks perhaps. Pyrotechnics. No explosive tags were involved here. Rising from a crouch, she'd looked at the size of the holes and didn't estimate they were military grade either. Whoever did this bombing was an amateur.

Looking about at the number of explosions, and where, she'd found her eyes rapidly scanning, turning this way and that as she began gathering all of the context clues she needed for the foundation of her investigation. At the very least, she knew there was likely no ninja involved in this kind of attack. Too sloppy in execution. "Nii-Sama. I'm feeling hungry. We should go get something to eat and drink!" Ikana says, crossing her arms behind her back and smiling at him, changing her entire demeanor and face in just a moment. Sounding so chipper and happy. And when they went out, away from the central square, she'd seek to lead him towards any of the random food stalls, where her smile dropped, and her face seemed back to its serious, tired look.

"There was a good bit to take away. I could tell just from a glance how the bombings were done. Now I just need a modus operandi." She says, slapping the back of her palm, and gazing towards Sho. "Which is why we need to ask some questions. A nice stall vendor will do. Udon perhaps?"

As Shō and Ikana decided to visit the site, he naturally took on the role of her older brother. The ruse of being a pair of teenagers siblings had its advantages, no one outside of Kirigakure paid much attention to youths, as long as they kept their headbands hidden. It was an effective cover, allowing them to blend in without raising suspicion.

While Ikana focused on the bombing site, Shō wasn't idling. He pretended to fix his shoelace, but in reality, he was carefully examining the area, just like his partner. Although not an expert in explosives, he could tell from the scattered debris and the pattern of the blast that this wasn’t the work of a professional, certainly not a shinobi.

The possibility of it being a setup crossed his mind, but considering there had been multiple explosions since then, he deemed it unlikely. If the perpetrator used traditional explosives, his job was to scan the surroundings and mentally map the area to find the "nest”.

As they moved around, Shō occasionally placed his hand on the ground, subtly sensing the layout of the land and identifying anything out of place. Once their investigation at the site was complete, they headed toward a random food stall for a break.

"That's some great observation and deduction." Shō remarked, acknowledging Ikana's sharp insights. "Udon it is. Maybe we can sit down and have a bowl while we're at it." He decided to let Ikana take the lead, seeing this as an opportunity for her to shine.

Ikana found herself resting herself, when he said she had some fine observation, though, she'd not listed what she'd found. Her brow raised, when she came to sit. "I saw blasting powder, implying that it wasn't used with paper bombs. I'd presume it was improvised, perhaps with fireworks." She'd thought, considering they were currently located within the entertainment district. Though she wasn't sure on that front. "They were centered where there were larger groups of people, meaning it either had to be cleverly set. Or it was sabotaged." Ikana looked at the situation from the most cynical minded of people, and with it, she'd already drawn several potential conclusions.

However, before long, she'd come to slowly kick her legs when looking out towards the vendor. "Hi! What can I get for you two?" To which Ikana calls forth, "Ah. Ojii-San. A bowl of udon for me please. And some water." To which she'd let Sho make his own order. However, before long, she'd take the liberty to ask as he worked. "Say. It's been so scary lately, with the news of the bombing that went out. Has it effected business much?" She'd ask with a level of concern in her tone. To which the man gripes. "It certainly has. More people are afraid to come about to watch the shows. It's usually a bustling and thriving place. More so than now. But tourists are worried about another attack." To which she'd slowly look a short distance away.

"Huh...What happened?"

To which the noodle vendor responds, "It was crazy. A crowd gathered to watch the kabuki shows and dance performances, before all of a sudden? Bam. The stage and the areas around and underneath it blew up! Boom! Bang! Splinters flying all over. People getting hurt. A few fires started too." To which Ikana listened and nodded her head at the telling. Which meant it confirmed in her mind. It was likely crude explosives. A paper bomb didn't tend to leave lasting flames. Sounded more like fireworks. Something she'd take into a deeper consideration.

"One Zaru Udon, please." Shō ordered, choosing his personal favourite. Cold, refreshing, and when dipped in sauce, it was a simple dish transformed into a masterpiece. While Ikana engaged the vendor in conversation, Shō remained silent, listening intently as he enjoyed his meal. Every detail the vendor shared was absorbed carefully—pieces of a puzzle that slowly began to form in his mind.

Once the vendor turned his attention to other customers, Shō pulled out a small scroll and quickly sketched a map, though his artistic skills left much to be desired. Still, the drawing was functional, adequate for a shinobi to understand. He discreetly handed it to Ikana.

Before arriving at the food stall, Shō had already scoped out several locations that piqued his interest. The nature of the explosives indicated they were likely manufactured locally. Naval patrols tightly secured the borders, hence making the import of completed explosives practically impossible.

Shō also believed the explosives were made nearby. Closer was safer, as the risk of transporting such dangerous items over long distances was too high. "These are the locations I'd like to personally inspect further. My guess is that the materials are produced locally, and they should be nearby to reduce the risk of being discovered during transport."

Splitting up would allow them to cover more ground, and since their mission was primarily investigative, it shouldn't pose much of an issue. Shō preferred to handle this personally, as his infiltration skills were far more effective when working alone. But just in case anything happened, he created a shadow clone with a quarter of his chakra reserve to accompany Ikana, ensuring that if anything went wrong, the clone could notify him immediately.

Ikana was fairly analytical. She'd learned to read people's intentions, and she'd been paying greater attention to subtle movements, made predictions, and had ultimately found herself deeply immersed in the finer details. "Please do. I know you excel at that kind of work." Ikana proclaims, as she takes a slurp of her own noodles, her eyes staring into the deepness of the broth. "...Based on my personal opinion though? This seems to be the work of a terrorist." Perhaps a dissenter to Mizukage-Sama's reign. There was no shortage of those in recent times so it seemed.

"...I'll be on standby. Taichou." Ikana proclaims, taking a deep sip of the hot warming broth, filling her with a sense of warmth. And when she was finished with her food, she'd raise her brow, when she saw him make the clone. "You should send the clone. You know how that jutsu works don't you? It can dispel and send us information. You can't." She'd exclaim with a cool and patient countenance as she looked out to the area. The last thing she was trying to figure out was the modus operandi. Something she was taking into a deep consideration.

A bomber had intention. Reasoning. And to put on a display like this, but no brazen declaration? Was it a diversion? Her mind seemed to be more focused on the mission and job as opposed to any of the joyous luxuries that rest around them, as if she was consumed by figuring out this little mystery.

"Terrorist, huh? Hmm…" Shō thought over Ikana's words. As a pacifist who loved nature, he often struggled to understand criminals. He believed no one was inherently evil, there must be a reason, a strong reason that forced them to commit crime, which led him to prioritise uncovering the truth over simply completing a mission.

Still, at this point, he couldn’t fathom the real motive behind the bombing. The nation was on a path toward prosperity, well, not exactly wealthy, but certainly better off than in previous decades. This idealess, however, only deepened his curiosity about the attack.

"Be right back." Shō said, preparing to leave but was stopped when Ikana questioned his use of the clone. He was briefly surprised but quickly responded with a smile. "Don't worry, it will work." he assured her without elaborating much, mainly because he knew he wasn't great at explaining things.

The principle behind his strategy was simple. Shō created a shadow clone, which the latter then summoned another clone (effectively leaving both clones with only a quarter of chakra). The first clone would stay with Ikana, while the second accompanied Shō.

Either clone could dispel to alert the other side, as there were effectively two users instead of the usual one controlling multiple clones. But Shō, knowing he was poor at explaining things, opted not to try it, he was all too aware of how bad he was as a teacher, heck just thinking about it made his head hurt.

Once he left, Shō headed for the first suspicious location on his map. To conserve chakra, he travelled on foot, avoiding attention thanks to his disguise. He made sure his clone took a different route, also in disguise, to further avoid suspicion.

Upon arriving at the site, Shō activated his kekkei genkai and moved through the earth to infiltrate the building. Inside, he found complete darkness. "There must be a switch somewhere…" he thought. After confirming the coast was clear, he flipped on the lights, only to find a warehouse full of furniture and equipment. After thoroughly checking the area and confirming it was just an ordinary warehouse, he left, disappointed. "Guess I'll head to the southern location next."

Ikana on the other hand was certainly no pacifist, but instead a pragmatist, and she believed that all inspirations for conflict was bread for the purpose of gain. Profit. Or if not that, then more radical reasonings. Through silly things such as honor, or pride. When she sat there, listening to Sho, saying how he would soon make his departure, she'd found herself quietly taking into consideration the life she lived, and nods her head. "Hai." She declares, when he says he'd be back. And with it, she would take the liberty to enjoy her noodles, and frankly, if Sho was going to be gone? His too.

Her best bet however was that the bombing done might have been done by some radicalist. Some exile or loser of the civil war from way back when, still seeking retribution or defiance against the Mizukage. As pointless as it was. Ikana found herself lethargic when thinking about that reality, and in that regard, she found herself thinking about how fruitless it was. How it was really little more than a nuisance to be facing off against the authorities present in situations such as this. In that regard? Depositing her chopsticks, she'd found herself drawing similar conclusions as Sho did.

That the explosives were indeed shoddy and makeshift. Locally made.

Shō continued his mission with a rush, his steps were light but quick as he approached the southern location he had marked earlier. The streets were quieter than usual, an eerie silence settling over the district. "Probably because of the recent bombing…" he mused, though he did not let his guard down. He remained skeptical, analysing every detail in his surroundings. Every subtle clue might be a piece of the larger puzzle.

Reaching the far perimeter of a building, Shō paused. Something felt off… his instincts urged caution. Activating his kekkei genkai, Shō sank into the earth, navigating through the soil with practiced precision. As he approached the building’s foundation, he sensed a large, concealed basement below. He surfaced quietly, emerging in a shadowed corner of the dimly lit storage area.

Scanning the room, Shō noted several men sprawled out asleep on the sofa. Careful not to disturb them, he focused on the surroundings. Wooden crates were stacked haphazardly, many unmarked, while a faint chemical odour hung in the air, sharp and acrid. On the ground near his feet, faint traces of black powder caught his attention. "Explosive materials, no doubt. Gotcha…" he thought, his suspicions now confirmed.

Suddenly, faint footsteps echoed from above. Shō froze, retreating further into the shadows. Muffled voices followed, their conversation too distant to make out. Deciding not to risk discovery, Shō slipped back into the earth, retreating to safety and re-emerging on the street outside.

The next step was clear: he needed to regroup with Ikana. He nodded toward his shadow clone, which dispersed immediately to relay the information to the clone accompanying her.

The shadow clone seated beside Ikana stiffened suddenly, clutching its head as memories surged through its mind. "Ugh…" it groaned softly, before recovering and addressing her in a low tone. "Ikana-san, we found it."
