Simple missions were often overlooked, even by recently promoted Genin. But no one could really blame them… when given the option between D and C-ranked assignments, the logical choice was always C. The disparity in difficulty wasn't significant, but the difference in compensation was substantial… averaging double of the lower-ranked mission.

Surveying the numerous D-ranked mission posters still attached on the wall, Shō decided to select one and see it through to completion. Part of his motivation stemmed from empathy for the mission provider, but mostly was because he sought respite from the exhausting and bloody (literally) missions he regularly faced. "If only there were no wars or criminals…"

As he perused through the mission board, a particular assignment caught his eye amidst the sea of posters. It appeared entirely blank, save for the prominent seal of Kamenoko Mamori at its centre. For those who were confused, Suiryu Butai missions were typically discreet and confidential, even at the lowest D ranked missions like this one. These kinds of posters were meant to be done by the organisation members only.

"For the sake of science…" Sho muttered to himself as he made his way to his headquarters building, without tearing the poster down of course. Why? Because you weren’t supposed to do that, obviously it was to prevent your identity being exposed.

Upon arriving at the headquarters, Shō patiently waited for the receptionist's to retrieve the mission details. "Oh, sorry for the delay~ Here you go!" The polite lady handed him the mission scroll, to which Shō responded with a thankful nod.

"Sleep Walking?" Shō exclaimed in surprise as he read the contents. It asked the mission accepter to test the newly created weird chemical capable of inducing immediate sleep walking. "That's all? Seriously… the description is remarkably brief…"

Sure, the mission was a D-ranked mission, but it was still unacceptable for the contents failing to elaborate on its usage or the specifics of its effects. Would it induce sleepwalking in individuals who were awake, or only in those who were fast asleep? And if it was the latter, during which stage of sleep? For those who were unaware, there were two main types: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM).

I’m sorry for not knowing your name, despite working in the same organisation. I usually spend all my time in the lab you see." Tanaka-sensei apologised to Shō with an awkward smile.

It was rare to see someone that used a handshake instead of bow and spoke so casually, especially an old man who was expected to be traditional. "Yes, I am." he replied, almost going for a bow due to the manners instilled on him since childhood. "I'm Shō. It's a pleasure to meet you, Tanaka-sensei."

It didn’t take him long to realise that it was a foolish plan, especially considering it was still morning. If his memory serves him correctly, his senior once told him that humans weren't built to sleep in the morning. But with enough force, everything would be possible. After a couple of hours of forcing the clones to sleep, they finally fall to sleep.

Shō then carefully retrieved the test tubes that Tanaka sensei had handed over to him. With a gentle flick, the container was unsealed, releasing a cloud of white mist. The mist was inhaled by the first clone, and… nothing happened.

"Huh?” Shō was shocked to find the drug had no effect at all. Didn’t Tanaka sensei say it would induce sleepwalking immediately? "Does this count as a failure?” he wondered. "Hmm… Perhaps I should wait for a little bit?” The blue-haired Gure sat down and waited, but not before closing the lid of the tube, saving the other half of the drug for the next test.

After 30 minutes or so, there was still no effect whatsoever, which prompted him to mark it as a failure. He quietly woke the clone up, making sure he didn’t wake the other one. Without speaking a word, the first clone nodded and dispelled himself, allowing the memory and sensation to flow back to the original.

Tanaka-sensei hadn’t specified which stage the drug was most effective in, because that required human experiments. In the end, it was up to him to experiment and document the data.

"Sigh…” Despite his sigh, Shō was far from tired. In fact, his eyes were burning bright, the scientist DNA in his blood boiling. Night soon arrived, and once again, with a strong flick, the lid was opened, and he scattered the remaining mist over the sleeping clone. Yet again, there was no result whatsoever.

Just as he was about to give up, suddenly the other him sleeping on the bed leaped out, eyes closed. It was clear that the clone was sleepwalking! "Does it work?” Shō thought to himself as he carefully observed the actions of his clone in the dark.

The clone stood straight and began to stretch. Then, he opened the door and moved downstairs, attempting to prepare breakfast, all the while keeping his eyes shut. Unsurprisingly, it was a disaster. The clone fell down the staircase.

"Oh crap!” The clone dissipated upon landing at the bottom of the stairs. Fortunately, the noise wasn’t loud enough to wake everyone up. But before Shō could relax, the memories suddenly flooded into his mind, allowing him to experience what the clone had felt at that moment.

It seemed like his guess was correct. The drug was more effective during deeper sleep and when the mind was more relaxed, such as when one was at home. However, he still labeled the drug as a failure because it posed significant danger to the sleepwalker since their perception system was essentially dormant at this stage.

The next morning, he immediately handed over the data and report to Tanaka sensei. Hopefully, with that data, the drug could be refined and become much more useful to people.
