[attr="class","butt-box2"]"Look, I don’t expect you’ll actually find Moci. A hawk scooped him up and took him into the forest days ago. Just find a similar looking cat, and my granny probably won’t even notice.”

Those were the words of Kenzo, the man who hired this to do this little mission in the Land of Birds in a town called Susume. It was a run down shanty on the edge of Moku no Kuni, settled along a trail of wadis that provided fresh water in the spring and winter months but were bone dry in the summer (as they were today).

Along the roofs of the rundown houses were nests of various birds of many species, some most exotic and colorful. The ground and sometimes the roofs had a healthy population of stray cats that patrolled the back alleys. Susume was meager in amenities, an abandoned stop on an old trade route. The remains of an old bazaar still took up much of the town’s center, although few shops were in business and even fewer customers shopped their wares.

"So, what do you think Ayane? We could try to find a chubby orange cat around here, which would probably be easiest.”

He anticipated she was going to want to go look for the lost cat in the woods. It was worth a shot to try to keep things simple though.

"His chubby cheeks, the way his curly tail flips around when he’s happy, the way he nibbles on a potato.” By this point it was probably clear she was talking about the big hog they’d seen at the festival just a day or two before. "We have to at least try to find the right cat. He could be lost in the woods, scared and alone. Don’t you want to see the look of joy on both their faces when they’re reunited? They might even give us a bonus if we do a good job.”

Ayane grinned at Chitoku. She knew he’d go along with it if she was insistent. So, she trotted off towards the tree line to look for the fat orange tabby. It probably chased a bird into a tree before realizing it couldn’t get down.

They’d worked for the man who bought that pig before, and he was still making plans to pay him a visit before it was too late. Money was tight though, and they needed supplies, so this mission would have to be completed before they left.

Without wasting much time, Chitkou and Ayane made their way across the fields and into the beginnings of the forest. The edge was so hot from the sun that the leaves were browning like they did in the fall, and the threshold of the forest gave shade that cooled their skin.

"I saw a small rocky hill poking out from the trees as we approached, this way,” Chitoku said. "If an eagle took the cat then that’s probably our best bet to search for its roost.”

He didn’t have high hopes for this cat to be alive or even found. Unless by some off chance it managed to escape the grasp of the eagle at a safe falling distance. Even then, it was probably wounded enough to have died in the woods somewhere.

"I don’t suppose your sensory abilities will let you distinguish between a cat and other critters?”

That hill seems like as good a place to start looking as anywhere else.” She followed him through the trees until they reached what was obviously the hill he’d been talking about but it only rolled up like a hill on one side and dropped into a rocky cliff face on the other side. Their pace slowed a little with the incline and Ayane squinted her eyes as she peered through the trees.

"I… don’t know if I can distinguish between small critters like that. It’s a bit beyond my skills with sensory abilities unfortunately. I could try though, we could at least get an idea of where some animals might be hiding. Ayane took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She could feel little tingles down her spine when she thought about different directions.

Smack! Ayane’s eyes shot open and she rubbed her nose as she backed up from the trunk of a tree she’d just walked into. "Hey! Ouch… You’re supposed to tell me if I’m about to run into something when I’m doing that.” She sighed and walked around the tree. "I think there is something off to the right.” She ran off in the direction she remembered feeling the tingle. There was definitely something up in the branches of a big tree. She pointed up towards it hopefully.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]As they were moving up the hill, Chitoku spotted with one of the eyes on his arm an eagle circling around nearby. His attention didn’t snap back to Akane until she complained about bumping into something.

"Oh, sorry,” he said. "I was a bit distracted. There’s an eagle up there, I wonder if that’s the one?”

He searched the branches with a plethora of eyes, searching each branch in search of the cat. Then, his eyes fell on a large collection of twigs and branches sewn into a hefty nest.

"Ayane, I want you to check out that nest. I will keep the eagle busy, see if the cat is up there?”

With that, he drew a shuriken from the inside of his jacket and exhaled a breath onto it, coating it in chakra that whistled softly with wind. Looking upwards he arched his arm back and threw it towards the eagle, with the flow of air exploding around it and launching it impossibly high.

His aim was slightly off, grazing the beak of the creature and only chipping it. Its eyes turned down at him and a shriek filled the sky as it started to turn its nose to the ground. It dove towards Chitoku with a blinding speed…

[attr="class","imaintext2"]A little squirrel came skittering down the trunk of the tree and Ayane’s shoulders slumped. So, it was not the cat after all. But wait! A glimmer of hope as Chitoku spotted a nest up in the branches. "Are you sure?” She said as she tried in vain to peer through the leaves. She’d just have to climb up there if she wanted to get a better look. "Ok. Just be careful. Birds are just about the meanest creatures that exist.”

She leapt up and grabbed onto the lowest branch, pulling herself up and over it with a groan. She swung her leg over the branch so she could sit straddling it and steady herself before standing up and reaching for a higher branch. She found a good foothold and then another, slowly making her way up the tree until she could see a nest that was just about five feet above her. Ayane looked back and down to check on Chitoku and immediately wished she hadn’t. The tree swayed gently in the breeze and the ground came in and out of focus with the pounding of her heart. She was pretty high up at this point, at least twenty five or thirty feet up. Ayane wasn’t great at measuring distances unless she had a tape measure.

Ayane took a breath and focused on the task at hand. She focused on her hands and tried to build up some chakra there so she could get a better grip as she climbed.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]As the eagle drew nearer to the ground, Chitoku called out to it.

"Eyes forward!” he shouted, lacing his words with chakra. The eagle’s vision narrowed and it lost its peripheral sight, making it impossible to keep aiming towards him as it flew down. Shrieking with terror, the bird flapped its wings hard to stop its descent.

She was confused, and began circling while shaking its head as if something might be stuck to the sides of its eyes. Out of sheer bad luck though, the narrowed vision of the eagle fell on Ayane in the tree climbing closer to her nest. Immediately her attention changed from the illusion to her motherly instincts. Her wings flapped violently as she moved towards the intruder swiftly.

"Not good,” the chunin called out to his partner. "Watch out!”

Determined to protect Ayane, Chitoku drew another shuriken out and again used a breath to enhance its power. He threw it and it embedded deep into the back of the eagle between her wingspan. She lost control of her flight and began a terminal descent at an angle towards the trees, likely to hit Ayane with a tackle as a final act if the kunoichi didn’t move out of the way.

Ayane glanced up in horror as the wounded bird of prey careened in her direction. She was neither fast enough to climb up nor brave enough to let herself fall. Instead, she unsealed Kyōdai, a large teddy bear shaped puppet. It hovered like a shield in front of Ayane and as the eagle swooped closer the puppet’s torso opened up like the doors of an armoire. The bird was not able to control its landing and smacked into the back off the compartment inside her puppet’s tummy. The doors snapped closed, trapping the angry mama bird. "Sorry buddy,” She whispered as she heard the sound of wings flapping against the cage. "It’s just temporary… and for your own safety as much as mine.”

Ayane climbed up enough to be even with the nest and peeked inside. "Oh no.” She glanced down at Chitoku and back at the nest. Inside were five baby birds and the lifeless body of a fat orange tabby. He’d clipped its wing, but the presence of young weighed on his mind. Sighing, he waited for the bird to run itself out of energy before having Ayane open it up. The eagle tried to peck at him, but he quickly met its gaze with an illusion that pinned it into place.

Afterwards, he held his palm over the eagle’s back and started working to repair the damage he did with his shuriken. Once that was done, he quietly led Ayane away with the body of the cat in toe before releasing the eagle from his illusion.

"Well, I think we can still get paid for this,” he said. "I’ll just sew it back up and umm, I’ll animate it long enough for us to collect payment. We’ll tell him that it was wounded and that I tried to help it out. That way the cat can pass away in its owners care so they have closure.”

Given the circumstances, it was the best he could do. He began the process of preserving and repairing the corpse right away. When he was finished, he traveled back into town with Ayane and in a back alley he "brought the cat back to life.” It moved stiffly and its eyes remained glazed over, definitely not in great shape.

"If you could do the talking, I’ll try my best to keep this going from behind the scenes for a while,” he said, handing her the cat.

A training technique that comes before mystical palm, this healing jutsu allows for the user to gather their chakra into a small white orb and move it over injured areas in order to somewhat speed up the regeneration of wounds. However, this jutsu can only heal flesh wounds and bring muscles together. It cannot heal severe wounds. At best, using this technique would allow for someone to heal a deep cut. Due to the nature of the technique, using it can be painful to the person being healed.

DESCRIPTION:
Using this technique, a user can temporarily reanimate a corpse, creating the illusion of a living person, and maneuver it at will with chakra. This is achieved by causing the heart to beat once more. The reanimated corpse can serve as either a short-time ally or an effective decoy. The traces of surgery can also be erased with chakra, because of which there's no difference, at first glance, with a live person.

Chōmoku
From a young age Chitoku was implanted with preserved eyes of deceased clansmen all over his body. Coverage includes both his arms (5 on each arm), torso (9 eyes), and back (7 eyes) effectively granting him a 360 degree field of vision when his chest is uncovered and a plethora of eyes to use as visual triggers for certain genjutsu. When all but his arms are covered there are small pockets of the field which only fall into his peripheral vision.

This gift comes at a price, as he is more susceptible to seeing visual triggers himself or having the soft tissues of the eye damaged. In case of being blinded, covered eyes can be uncovered to provide sight as well, although the more eyes that are blinded or damaged the less coverage he has with line of sight.

Homicidal Medicine
Versed in traditional medicine including surgery, Chitoku can provide conventional first aid treatments to the wounded and practice medicine in general. Knowledge of the human body also grant him insights on vulnerable parts of anatomy and a deeper understanding of pain as well.

Exceptional Chakra Control
Compared to most shinobi of his grade, Chitoku's chakra control is exceptional. He is able to conserve a good deal of energy with his jutsu usage which allows him in turn to use more jutsu over time. His control is precise enough to channel complicated illusions and medical chakra as well.

She never got that chance with her family but maybe they could make this woman believe that she did get to be there with her cat when it passed. That would be worth it in itself but it was also probably the only way to get paid and they needed the money to save her pig friend.

They walked up to the house. There was a little gate and a cute garden that led up to a blue door. She knocked three times. It was hot and it felt like they were waiting forever but finally the door opened. It was the woman’s son that they had talked to before. "Hi.” She said, "We found Moci but he was badly hurt. I don’t think he’ll live long. What should we do?”

The son looked down at the cat. It nuzzled against his hand. He told them to come in and they followed him to the sitting room where an old woman was waiting. Ayane explained the situation; that Moci had been badly injured and they’d done their best to heal him but that he probably wasn’t going to make it. She passed the cat over to the old woman who held it tight. She stroked his fur and told him how much she loved him and that it was alright for him to rest now.

Ayane apologized and left the room. Chitoku followed and so did her son who thanked them and gave them the agreed upon amount. The two went on their way leaving the old woman holding her cat as his one extra life faded from him.
