It had been a long time since Azarea had visited Hi-No-Kuni's Port City. Not since she was a newly minted genin on one of her first missions still figuratively and literally wet behind the ears as her sensei back then taught her the art of water walking on the choppy waves and currents of the ocean. The scent of salt and sea was almost as familiar to her as the thick petrichor that hung over the land after the heavy summer rains. However it wouldn't due to be recognized just yet as a Hi-No-Kuni native. Not when she needed to work closely with Konoha shinobi not only to ensure her mission, but likewise to get home.

The Honō no Kagami was the name of the ship she and her partner were set to protect. The vessel a medium sized two mast three deck red seal trade ship with light armaments meant to deter pirates at range, but of little use if the smaller vessels got up alongside them. That of course was where shinobi came in with Azarea and her Konohagakure companion hired to hopefully make quick work of anyone who attempted to board without risking damaging the ship itself, her crew, or their cargo. Apparently Dawa Altan had put in a good word for her in regards to her capabilities as an shinobi escort. Forming a few handseals her hair bled white and eyes shifted to a shade of silver.

"Well this will just have to do for now." She muttered knowing her disguise wouldn't hold up to close scrutiny if her partner by random chance happened to know or remember her. Though given how isolated her clan had kept her the likelihood of that was slim and once they were out over the water she wouldn't need to worry about revealing her bugs as much. The now pale haired young woman glancing around in hopes of spotting her partner. One Yamanaka Tomomi or so she had heard.

Every so often, it was still in Tomomi's interest to go out on missions away from the village. In their younger shinobi years they had been an infiltration and information extraction expert, breaking up crime rings and sourcing bandit groups. It was a skill that they would do well not to let dull.

Capturing suspects and bringing them back in could be pivotal to finding out more information about the pirate operations in this area and lay to rest some of the concerns about safety along these trade routes - especially with Mizu no Kuni and Yuki no Kuni working so heavily on shoring up their trade routes and the safety along them, Hi no Kuni and Kaminari no Kuni needed to do similar if they wanted to remain competitive in the eyes of merchants.

Also, just maybe, the other members of the Barrier Corps had lobbied for them to go on an away mission because their dedication to perimeter patrols was "unhealthy" and "frankly concerning." Maybe.

Whatever the myriad reasons for their arrival were, they were here now in the port city of Hi no Kuni, ready to meet with a younger shinobi from the land of clouds and board the Honō no Kagami. As they approached the vessel, they spotted their ally with relative ease. Though they did not recognize her, the outfit - heavy jacket and drop leg pouch for equipment - signified a shinobi as well as any village headband.

"It's a good morning for sailing," they said, as a manner of greeting, looking out at the water as they boarded. "No clouds out here yet. That means we probably won't see storms or the like until we make it halfway - the water can get choppy near Whirlpool country." Presumably this shinobi would know this, though maybe she had always come by way of land rather than going on the waters.

"I'm Yamanaka Tomomi. It will be a pleasure to work with you." They gave her a bow, perfectly polite. Perhaps too much so? They'd been told that before.

"In the midst of chaos..."

At the sight of Yamanaka signature long blonde hair Azarea turns plastering a polite smile onto her face as her partner for the mission calls out to her and it's a miracle in a half and a testament to nearly six years of 'customer service' working in the Kage tower being routinely interrogated by shinobi searching for their errant runaway Raikage that the expression doesn't slip right off her face in shock. The man before her couldn't be anyone, but that gate guard chuunin, what was his name? Ah yes he was introducing himself now. Tomori. Right. Yes. That guy who had checked her and her wet behind the ears green horned snotty nosed little genin team in every time her sensei had dragged them outside the village gates for some mission or another in hopes of wearing out the hyperactive youngsters with boring chores for ryo. It never worked sadly the poor man, but it meant that her old Konoha ID booklet was well worn from inspection before she'd even reached the chuunin exams. A slight spark of surprise jolting through her as she attempts to smooth out her concern and worries lest her hive start buzzing thinking there was some sort of threat.

"Ah greetings Yamanaka-san. It is a pleasure to be working with you on this mission. I'm Azarea of Kumogakure no Sato," She introduces herself with an equally polite bow her headband visible on her left arm now that she's turned to face him. The woman preferring to use her village rather then a clan name to introduce herself even knowing it would likely signal her as some errant bastard or orphan then a well bred clan shinobi. Then again after being all, but thrown out wasn't she exactly that?

"I've never had the pleasure of taking Hi-no-Kuni and Kaminari-no-Kuni's sea routes so this will be a new experience for me. I'll take your word in regards to the weather. I hope our mission will be fruitful for both of our villages." Azarea adds gaze shifting towards their charge for the mission and on it's deck a tanned well muscled bald man with a salt and pepper beard who was currently shouting orders that could be no one else, but that man in charge.

"That must be Captain Goro. Is there anything we should know about each other before we board? My specialties lay in Genjutsu and Ninjutsu, however I'm doton natured so I'm afraid many of my more offensive techniques may not be as useful on the open water." She offers wanting this job to be a shining success for both their villages and if that meant being a little more open with Konoha nin then she would normally like then she'd do it and gladly.

Perhaps it was the years of investigation and interrogation, but Tomomi noticed that brief flicker of surprise. Not sure what to make of it, he elects to ignore it for now. There are quite a few reasons it could've crossed her face, after all. Nervousness about the mission or some such - she is a genin, to the best of Tomomi's knowledge. Still, he will be keeping an eye on her now, curiosity sparked.

As the captain aboard the ship begins to bark orders, Tomomi's gaze shifts away from Azarea and to him. The deckhands get to work preparing the ship for sail, all the last minute checks and adjustments necessary to make sure the vessel was seaworthy. After a moment watching, his eyes slide back to Azarea and he answers her question.

"I'm a puppeteer myself. Once we're out at sea, I'll probably summon my puppets and prepare them for battle in advance. Since we're both back-line fighters, allow them to protect you while you perform your jutsu," he says. In a way, having puppets aboard was like having more bodies to fight. Though they may not be able to move independently, they were trouble enough that they could probably keep the threat of pirates at bay, especially ones without formal shinobi training.

"I can perform suiton techniques, so if we run into any trouble with water, leave it to me." They don't favor elemental techniques by any stretch of the imagination, but are competent enough. With that established, Tomomi boards the ship, not wanting to delay departure. That doesn't mean they stall the conversation, though.

"If we can help it, we should try to bring at least one any pirates who assail us in alive."

"In the midst of chaos..."

"I'm trained and combat tested when it comes to water walking so there's no risk of me drowning so long as I have chakra should I have to go over the side." Azarea explains comforted somewhat by the fact the man appeared to be a suiton user. It would certainly make any issues out on the ocean a little more manageable for certain. "And my most recent partner was a puppet user as well so I'm familiar with working with such techniques. I believe I have a few jutsu that would be suitable for taking a target intact." She muses mentally going over her array of techniques as she follows him up the gangplank doing her best to avoid the various hustle and bustle of sailors as they go about getting ready to set off. Her long pale hair catching in the sea breeze glinting with what could only be razor wire woven among the strands as she makes a mental note to braid it up later once they've been assigned their cabins.

"Well that is if you don't count a little bit of mental scarring, but they should be fine to be interrogated." Azarea adds realizing feeling as though they are slowly dying of poison as their limbs and body is rendered useless about them is probably fairly traumatic to civilian thugs even pirates. After all they weren't Kaminari no Kuni residents who had grown hardened to such things with the plague.

"But I shall deem to please." She jests as the Captain finally turns his attention upon the two his expression gruff, but not unkind as he glances them over.

"Right. You shinobi lot have cabin 14 on the first deck. Just keep out of my crews way don't let the pirates kill none of us and we'll get along fine." He grunts out unable to spare them more then a few words before he's back to yelling at some poor deckhand who clearly mis-tied a rope inquiring loudly where the man had left his brains and if he needed to pay said shinobi extra to hopefully find where the poor bastard left his intelligence.

"Well shall we check out or accommodations? It seems like we'll mostly be needed at night when the pirates are more likely to sneak up unseen. We should have plenty of warning in the day unless there's a storm or mist in regards to oncoming pursuit at least." Azarea muses gesturing to the hatch to the lower deck as she hauls it up and begins to descend intent on finding their room for the majority of the journey.

Well if what they find can be called a room. It's really more like a closet with a pair of hammocks hung up and just enough space for a footlocker beneath each of them. As it becomes rapidly clear to Azarea that keeping up her henge in such close quarters is going to be quite the practice for her control.

Tomomi shrugs a shoulder at the mention of mental scarring and cracks the quick joke,

"Fear can go a long way towards interrogation." They're not the sort to have moral qualms about that kind of thing. Breaking criminals had been half their career. Any flinching at those thoughts had been drained out of them before they'd even gone through the academy.

The captain directs them towards their cabins and he follows after Azarea, happy to check out the accommodations. This is a shipping vessel, not a noble's travel liner, so they're not surprised to find that the room is relatively small, leaving no room for comfort and exclusively allowing for function. They've slept in worse quarters, quite honestly, so their pleasant expression doesn't falter the slightest at it.

"We shouldn't have to worry too much about being taken by surprise. I'm also a sensor shinobi," he informs Azarea with a wink. They don't want to reveal all their secrets, as puppeteers tend to keep information close, but cluing her in on something that important seems wise. "I won't be able to discern friendly vessel from pirate, but I'll know if anything is approaching on the water from a few kilometers out." A few is selling himself short. But, again, secrets.

Reaching into his supplies, he pulls forth a small scroll and unrolls it. With a few hand seals, he pulls forth a small puppet from the scroll. It is about knee-height, appears to be made from wood and woven sack material, and has scythes for arms. He places it in his hammock for now. Better to have at least one on immediate availability in case of emergency.

"In the midst of chaos..."

"Really?" Azarea questions perking up in interest as the man mentions himself to be a sensor shinobi. Her silver eyes lighting up with curiosity as she unshoulders her pack and sets it into the footlocker having long grown used to carrying everything she needed for actual combat on her person. She could live without a change of clothes if she got washed overboard even if it was unpleasant, but she wasn't going to risk ever being without a weapon while outside her own home. Perhaps not even while within it.

"I was identified as a sensor and genjutsu type in the academy, but I'm still working on developing my chakra control enough to take advantage of it. Unfortunately the plague set me back a good few years." She admits her words half truths. The plague did cost her a great deal of time, but it was the poison really that had eaten up nearly six years of her life.

"You wouldn't happen to be willing to part with a few tips for an up-and-coming sensor would you to make this journey a bit less boring? I'd even settle for some chakra control tricks if you have them for spare. I'm hardly picky." Azarea jests as she tests out her hammock and finds it comfy enough to suit her taste and at least better then sleeping on the ground. Her gaze flicking over the puppet lounging in Tomori's one across from her briefly. Of course she couldn't afford to be picky. Nor family. No clan any longer. She had to make do on her own.

"Well... chakra control and poisons, but poisons are a bit more difficult to train with safely on the job." She admits with a sad sigh as if the thought of being unable to dose herself with life threatening toxins was truly the most difficult part of this job. Her smile however is rueful and teasing as she attempts to thaw the polite frigidity between them.

The plague had done a far amount of damage to Kumogakure - Tomomi isn't surprised to learn that it also had a large impact on the shinobi forces of the country. Hard to dedicate forces to teaching when there's so much need for front-line medical workers and people to run supplies, as well as shinobi dying left and right from the disease. The collapse had left much room for crime to blossom, which meant even more need for shinobi to be out working instead of at home as well. The economy was still recovering, and Tomomi imagined that the academy had probably just gotten back into regular order in the last year or so.

"I think I can spare a few tips." Chakra control and sensory abilities aren't exactly a carefully guarded secret, not quite like village techniques or puppetry. Sharing common practices with village allies is almost a matter of politeness, really.

"The reason sensory techniques require such fine chakra control is because you're essentially spreading your chakra to its absolute maximum. A thin layer over a very, very large space. The best way I've found to practice both chakra control and sensory abilities is to create a ball of chakra between your hands, a set, finite amount. Don't add anymore and try not to let any escape. Then, slowly, expand that chakra bit by bit."

"I appreciate it. My mentor was unfortunately essential to the village so he couldn't spare much time." Azarea admits as she kickes off her tabi boots and settles down into her hammock. The ship would be making way soon, but at this interval the two shinobi would just be underfoot if they went topside and started scouting around. What with all the sailors hustling and bustling to get things ready to go and stored away. The din of the chaos above them a muffled roar of sound even in their room, but that doesn't stop the pale haired woman from listening to Tomomi with rapt attention.

"I see. That's actually a really neat trick. I think I get the jist of it." She muses leaning back and making herself comfortable as she holds her hands up over her chest the woman's brow furrowing as she concentrates on pooling her chakra between her hands to create a ball compact enough to be seen. The technique and basis behind sensing not too unlike the Aburame jutsu for calling insects as she slowly tries to expand her palms imagining the ball stretching like a net.

Of course such things are easier said then done. The woman manages to expand it an inch or two without adding more chakra, but as she thins the chakra the ball looses shape and flickers out of existence. The woman staring at the place where it had been with a scowl as if the air had personally offended her.

"Do you travel by sea along this route often Tomomi-san?" She asks to distract herself from her lack of success as she concentrates on trying to create a new ball of chakra between her hands.

Essential to the village is an interesting phrase. Perhaps the lord? Though maybe not. Could just as well be a Jounin Hanchou, a sage, a member of the special forces if one doesn't pretend each village doesn't have one of those. Any of those roles would result in only being able to train in brief snatches between important meetings and sneaky missions.

He watches her progress on the chakra she is forming. She does well at first, but soon it loses form, and the chakra escapes into the sea air, like a popped balloon. That's one of the reason it requires such chakra concentration, really. Keeping everything perfectly even takes quite a bit of effort. If Azarea is still having trouble after her next attempt, he'll provide some more advice - for now he just watches keenly, trying to determine what exactly she's done wrong.

"Not especially often. I've always done more work in Hi no Kuni than outside of it," he answers. "I'm the Hokage's Assistant, so I spend most of my days inside the village. He likes to send me out on occasion, though. Our village is safe, so I don't see much combat if I stay there."

Usually bandits along trade routes within the nation are a little more concerning to the Hokage than those outside, but a stronger ally makes a stronger nation, and they need to focus on their naval development now more than ever.

Slowly Azarea formed another ball of small condensed chakra between her hands realizing quickly that what was throwing her off was the need to compensate for the low drain of the henge on her reserves. If she wanted to maintain her disguise and likewise practice her control she would need to quickly learn how to manage this training trick with minimal waste of chakra or find her reserves spent before they even saw combat. The woman drawing in a slow breath her gaze focused between her hands as this time instead of instantly trying to expand it she instead works on forming the chakra while still condensed into an almost mesh like structure before slowly centimeter by centimeter spreading them wider. "I hear Konohagakure no Sato's recent kage is an interesting sort. He must be very dedicated to his work to ensure his assistant has time to keep up with their field experience." Azarea muses offering Tomomi a small smile. While Riku would forever hold a special place in her heart she has to admit she doesn't miss having paperwork dumped on her all hours of the day. Then again she could not really blame the man. He'd never wanted to be Kage.

"Well that or you're really good at getting paperwork done quickly." She adds with a soft chuckle beaming proudly as she manages to spread the ball of chakra nearly as wide as the width of her chest. The thing mesh like structure thinning and appearing more and more akin to a net. Until a jolt rocked the ship as the vessel hauled up the anchor and began to depart. The sudden movement sending the cabin rolling and the hammocks swaying as the Kumo shinobi knocked her elbow against the wall in her haste to sit up losing control of the technique as the ball once more 'popped.' The woman swearing lowly beneath her breath.

"Well... at least I did better that time." Azarea muses with a shake of her head. "Hopefully things die down once we're out of the port and underway. Then we can scout the deck and find good spots to post up should the ship be boarded."

Uzumaki Keisuke certainly is the interesting sort. Vibrant, passionate, dedicated. He's a good shinobi, though jumps ahead of himself a little too often. It's very... Uzumaki of him, is what Tomomi could say about that. But it wasn't a bad thing - he cares about Konoha greatly, is a pillar of the community. Even if Tomomi had slightly preferred working under the previous Hokage, he appreciates Keisuke's unique qualifications as well.

"Puppetry makes paperwork surprisingly quick. Pull out a clone or two and each of them can hold a dozen pens or brushes at once. Speed right on through," he jokes. He is much too meticulous to actually hastily sign anything like that, but he is good at organizing and filing paperwork at insanely high speeds. He's got it down to such a science that he could practically draft a jutsu scroll on it. Maybe he should for whoever comes after him.

The ship shifts, sending Azarea bumping against the wall. It disrupts her focus and again the chakra bubble bursts. Still, any progress is good progress. She'll get where she wants eventually.

"The water should be steadier once we're out on the open water... As I said earlier, I don't anticipate things getting rough until Whirlpool Country's waters. I'm sure once we enter that territory is where we'll come upon more pirates. I've heard these types like threatening to force ships into the whirlpools to try to intimidate surrender," he informs her.

"That's actually a pretty clever tactic." Azarea muses shouldering herself up and out of the hammock as she hops back down to the floor. Taking the time to tug her tabi boots back on. "The smaller ships can probably much more easily skim the outer edges of the whirlpools without risk of getting pulled in and use the speed to launch themselves back out since they sit high in the water. Where as heavy ships while not as easily caught have less chance of escaping once forced into the pull." The Kumo Kunoichi muses making a mental note of the tactics so she could provide a report on such things to the Raikage later for use with their own navy. The woman stumbling a little as the ship moves out across the choppy waves for deeper water. Azarea eventually just sticking herself in place for the moment with chakra to prevent from toppling.

"I guess I should probably concentrate on attempting to secure my sea legs before anything else." She jokes hardly so proud to avoid laughing at her own expanse as she flashes Tomomi a grin. At least, thank the gods, her stomach felt just fine. It would be poor tidings if she'd taken an ocean going mission only to learn she was prone to sea sickness.

"Should we head back up top and get the lay of the figurative land?" She suggests wobbling and bumping her way towards the door and out into the hallway. Compensating for her footing with a steady hand against the wall laden with chakra to stick to the wood.

She got the tactics of it down pretty quickly. Good. That means Tomomi is working with a clever shinobi. If she keeps up that level of tactical thinking, she'll make for a great Chuunin, whenever she goes for the exams. If she intends to, of course. Some people elect to be career genin, after all. Tomomi watches as she wobbles somewhat, using tree walking as a way to steady herself on the boat. Luckily for Tomomi, they're slightly used to this, though definitely nowhere near as much as a proper sailor or pirate.

However, he motions for Azarea to go first. If somehow her focus slips and she falls back on the climb up, Tomomi would like to be able to catch her. Unlikely, but just one of those things a shinobi has to think about while working on a team.

If they make it back up to the deck without trouble, he pauses for a second to enjoy the sea wind, the way it makes his hair whip about. Then he focuses in on the task at hand, pulling out the scrolls for his remaining puppets and going to tack them down at various points around the ship - Kazane and Nokogiri at either side and Orizuru nearer to the mast.

"In the midst of chaos..."

Tree walking comes far more naturally for Azarea. The woman treating the hallway more like a four dimensional space then a flat level battlefield. Not a bad idea in close quarters on a ship where room was limited as she clung to the ladder with her chakra scaling up it with little difficulty. The hatch though opens up to endless blue. The harbor rapidly falling away behind them leaving just wind, and waves, and an endless blue with the only thing separating sky and sea the thin line of the horizon.

"Oh," She murmurs somewhat taken aback by the sight. Having never strayed further than the harbor hauling crates or helping fishermen pull up nets in her early years as a genin. The sight of the sea, actual sea and not coastal waters, a surprising treat. There's a sense of freedom to it as the salty wind whips through her pale locks tossing her and Tomomi's hair about like flags in the wind. Suddenly she understands why Kumogakure no Sato wants a stronger navy or why shinobi would choose to go to sea.

Blinking in the light Azarea shakes her head shifting her gaze from the horizon to the ship itself noting the masts and the crows nest along with the sturdy ropes securing them even as sailors scurry about. The place was practically a shinobi's playground with a little chakra application.

"I think in a fight the higher up I get the more use I'll be." She murmurs pointing out the crows nest and the highest deck of the ship near the wheel and railings.

"There is also opportunity."
